The influence of walking speed on the mechanoresponsiveness of biomarkers.

PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to examine short-term biomarker responses to walking at three different speeds in healthy individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Healthy participants completed three study visits. At each visit, participants rested supine for 45 minutes, after which blood was collected. Next, participants completed a 30-minute treadmill walk, and another blood sample was collected. Finally, participants rested in a supine position for 45 minutes, after which a third blood sample was collected. At each visit, the treadmill speed was varied so that participants walked at a slow,

"Feeling younger, walking faster": subjective age and walking speed in older adults.

Walking speed is a key vital sign in older people. Given the implications of slower gait speed, a large literature has identified health-related, behavioral, cognitive, and biological factors that moderate age-related decline in mobility. The present study aims to contribute to existing knowledge by examining whether subjective age, how old or young individuals experience themselves to be relative to their chronological age, contributes to walking speed. Participants were drawn from the 2008 and 2012 waves of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS, N = 2970) and the 2011 and 2013 waves of the Na

Ten Meters Walking Speed in Spinal Cord-Injured Patients: Does Speed Predict Who Walks and Who Rolls?

BACKGROUND: Walking speed is assumed to be a key factor in regaining ambulation after spinal cord injury (SCI). However, from the literature it remains unclear which walking speed usually results in independent community ambulation. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this study was to determine at which walking speed SCI patients tend to walk in the community instead of using a wheelchair. The secondary aim was to investigate clinical conditions that favor independent ambulation in the community. METHODS: Data from SCI patients were collected retrospectively from the European Multicenter Study ab

Walking balance control in different settings: Effects of walking speed and biological sex.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has suggested that spatiotemporal step parameters differ between settings; however, it remains unclear how different settings influence walking balance control. RESEARCH QUESTION: How do settings and sex influence walking balance control during walking at different speeds for young adults? METHODS: Forty-two adults (21 male (23 ± 4 years), 21 female (24 ± 5 years)) completed overground walking trials in four settings: laboratory (10 m), hallway, indoor open, and outdoor pathway (all 20 m) at three self-selected speeds (slow, preferred, fast) following verbal ins

Walking speed and incline impact on mediolateral-stability control.

BACKGROUND: Controlling and stabilizing the body are crucial for walking on an inclined path. Healthy individuals adjust their gait to improve stability by reducing stride length and increasing cadence. Incline influences anteroposterior stability; however, its effects on mediolateral stability are inconclusive. RESEARCH QUESTION: What are the effects of walking inclination and speed on mediolateral stability using foot placement quantified by explained variance (EV)? METHODS: Fifteen healthy young adults walked on a treadmill under four speed (moderate 0.83 m/s, fast 1.0 m/s) and grade (0 a

Determinants of maximum walking speed in hemiparetic stroke patients.

The time necessary to walk 10 m with the fastest speed, the sway path of the center of feet pressure in station, and the isokinetic strength for knee extension of each side were examined in 29 hemiparetic stroke patients. The maximum walking speed of the patients was related to the sway path and the isokinetic muscle strength of affected side. The patients could be divided into two groups based on their sway path. The determinants of the maximum walking speed in the unstable group were the sway path and the isokinetic muscle strength of the both sides, whereas that in the stable group was only

Electrical brain activity during human walking with parametric variations in terrain unevenness and walking speed.

Mobile brain imaging with high-density electroencephalography (EEG) can provide insight into the cortical processes involved in complex human walking tasks. While uneven terrain is common in the natural environment and poses challenges to human balance control, there is limited understanding of the supraspinal processes involved with traversing uneven terrain. The primary objective of this study was to quantify electrocortical activity related to parametric variations in terrain unevenness for neurotypical young adults. We used high-density EEG to measure brain activity when 32 young adults wa

Training conditions influence walking kinematics and self-selected walking speed in patients with neurological impairments.

Gait training is a major focus of rehabilitation for many people with neurological disorders, yet systematic reviews have failed to identify the most effective form of gait training. The main objective of this study was to compare conditions for gait training for people with acquired brain injury (ABI). Seventeen people who had sustained an ABI and were unable to walk without assistance were recruited as a sample. Each participant was exposed to seven alternative gait training conditions in a randomized order. These were: (1) therapist manual facilitation; (2) the use of a gait-assistive devic

A Faster Walking Speed Is Important for Improving Biomechanical Function and Walking Performance in Stroke Survivors.

This study compares joint kinematics and kinetics of young stroke survivors who walk <0.79 m/s (slow) or >0.80 m/s (fast) with reference to a healthy able-bodied group and provides clinical recommendations for guiding the gait rehabilitation of stroke survivors. Twenty-two young stroke survivors (18-55 y) were recruited from 6 hospital sites in the United Kingdom. Stroke participants were classified by walking speed as slow (<0.79) or fast (>0.80 m/s), and joint kinematics and kinetics at the pelvis, hip, knee, and ankle were measured during walking on level ground at self-selected speed. Investigation of walking speed and plantar pressure after chopart amputation.

BACKGROUND: In foot amputation, Chopart amputation is considered to have a high risk of deformity, and can result in poor function. We experienced a case in which Chopart amputation combined with tendon transfer and tendon lengthening was performed, and the patient was eventually able to walk independently with a foot prosthesis without experiencing deformity of the foot. We investigated walking speed and plantar pressure after Chopart amputation with and without a foot prosthesis. CASE: A 78-year-old man underwent Chopart amputation with tendon transfer and tendon lengthening. As a result, h

Trunk muscle activation patterns during walking among persons with lower limb loss: Influences of walking speed.

Persons with lower limb amputation (LLA) walk with altered trunk-pelvic motions. The underlying trunk muscle activation patterns associated with these motions may provide insight into neuromuscular control strategies post LLA and the increased incidence of low back pain (LBP). Eight males with unilateral LLA and ten able-bodied controls (CTR) walked over ground at 1.0 m/s, 1.3 m/s, 1.6 m/s, and self-selected speeds. Trunk muscle onsets/offsets were determined from electromyographic activity of bilateral thoracic (TES) and lumbar (LES) erector spinae. Trunk-pelvic kinematics were simultaneously

Effects of aging on arm coordination at different walking speeds.

BACKGROUND: Previous work has shown that the mean continuous relative phase and coordination variability of lower limbs are modified in older adults when walking. RESEARCH QUESTION: Here, we propose to understand the extent to which such control mechanisms for upper limbs are present during gait. Specifically, we seek to understand if aging and gait speed constraints influence the interjoint control of upper limbs during walking. METHODS: This observational study evaluated thirty-three participants, divided into older (n = 20, age 66.4 ± 4.3 years; mass: 77.2 ± 14.2 kg; height: 165 ± 9.20 cm

Effects of Walking Speeds and Durations on Peak Plantar Pressures.

BACKGROUND: Walking at various speeds and durations may result in different peak plantar pressure (PPP). However, there is no study comparing the effect of walking speeds and durations on PPP. The purpose of this study was to explore whether different walking speeds and durations significantly change PPP and establish a normal response in healthy people. METHODS: An in-shoe plantar pressure system was used to measure PPP under the first toe, first metatarsal, second metatarsal, and heel regions in 12 healthy, young people. All participants performed six walking trials at three speeds (3, 6, a

Characterization of speed adaptation while walking on an omnidirectional treadmill.

BACKGROUND: Conventional treadmills are widely used for gait retraining in rehabilitation setting. Their usefulness for training more complex locomotor tasks, however, remains limited given that they do not allow changing the speed nor the direction of walking which are essential walking adaptations for efficient and safe community ambulation. These drawbacks can be addressed by using a self-pace omnidirectional treadmill, as those recently developed by the gaming industry, which allows speed changes and locomotor movements in any direction. The extent to which these treadmills yield a walking

The effects of muscle damage on walking biomechanics are speed-dependent.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of muscle damage on walking biomechanics at different speeds. Seventeen young women completed a muscle damage protocol of 5 × 15 maximal eccentric actions of the knee extensors and flexors of both legs at 60°/s. Lower body kinematics and swing-phase kinetics were assessed on a horizontal treadmill pre- and 48 h post-muscle damaging exercise at four walking speeds. Evaluated muscle damage indices included isometric torque, delayed onset muscle soreness, and serum creatine kinase. All muscle damage indices changed significantly after ex
