Foraging devices as enrichment in captive walruses (Odobenus rosmarus).

Stereotypies in captive animals are typically defined as repetitive, invariant behavioral patterns with no obvious goal or function. They are often attributed to boredom or fear and treated by introducing occupational stimuli. The present work on captive walruses examined the relationship between walrus stereotypies and species-typical foraging behaviors engaged in by their wild counterparts. Two types of walrus stereotypies were studied: (a) patterned swimming around their pool, or (b) repetitive sucking of some item, typically their own flipper. We tested two enrichment devices under filled

Multi-tissue DNA methylation aging clocks for sea lions, walruses and seals.

Age determination of wild animals, including pinnipeds, is critical for accurate population assessment and management. For most pinnipeds, current age estimation methodologies utilize tooth or bone sectioning which makes antemortem estimations problematic. We leveraged recent advances in the development of epigenetic age estimators (epigenetic clocks) to develop highly accurate pinniped epigenetic clocks. For clock development, we applied the mammalian methylation array to profile 37,492 cytosine-guanine sites (CpGs) across highly conserved stretches of DNA in blood and skin samples (n = 171)

Novel peeling skin condition in neonatal Pacific walruses, Saint Lawrence Island, Alaska, USA.

We describe here a novel peeling skin condition (PSC) in 2 neonatal Pacific walruses (Odobenus rosmarus subsp. divergens). Macroscopically, calves had various degrees of peeling skin exacerbated by mechanical trauma. Lesions occurred in areas subject to friction: ventrum, fore- and hindflippers, and associated joints. Histopathologic features included pseudocarcinomatous epithelial hyperplasia with orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis. Bacterial cocci were present within the stratum corneum. A few intraepidermal clefts were present. Inflammation, epidermolysis, and vasculopathies were not observed. P

Contaminants in Atlantic walruses in Svalbard part 1: Relationships between exposure, diet and pathogen prevalence.

This study investigated relationships between organohalogen compound (OHC) exposure, feeding habits, and pathogen exposure in a recovering population of Atlantic walruses (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus) from the Svalbard Archipelago, Norway. Various samples were collected from 39 free-living, apparently healthy, adult male walruses immobilised at three sampling locations during the summers of 2014 and 2015. Concentrations of lipophilic compounds (polychlorinated biphenyls, organochlorine pesticides and polybrominated diphenyl ethers) were analysed in blubber samples, and concentrations of perfluo

SEROLOGIC RESPONSE AND ADVERSE EFFECTS OF RECOMBINANT CANINE DISTEMPER VACCINATION IN THREE AQUARIUM-HOUSED WALRUSES (ODOBENUS ROSMARUS).

Fatalities have been associated with phocine and canine distemper viruses in marine mammals, including pinnipeds. No data are available regarding distemper disease or vaccination in walruses. This study evaluates seroconversion and clinical adverse effects following administration of a canarypox-vectored recombinant distemper vaccination (two 1-ml doses, 3 wk apart) in three adult aquarium-housed walruses. Serum antibodies to distemper were measured using seroneutralization on blood samples collected under operant conditioning prior to and for 12 mon after vaccination or until titers were <32.

Towards a better understanding of the benefits and risks of country food consumption using the case of walruses in Nunavik (Northern Quebec, Canada).

Food insecurity affects Inuit communities. One solution is to consume locally harvested foods, named country foods. However, some country foods are not eaten as often as before, and pressures including contaminants and environmental changes threaten the health of Arctic fauna, thus its suitability for local consumption. By combining Inuit Knowledge with laboratory data, our study assessed the benefits and risks of walrus consumption by Inuit in Nunavik, Québec, Canada. It aimed to increase understanding of: 1) the hunt of healthy Atlantic walruses (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus); 2) the safe prep

Tissue distribution of ultraviolet absorbents and industrial antioxidants in Atlantic walruses (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus) and ringed seals (Pusa hispida) from the Canadian Arctic: Influence of sex, body size, and spatial variation.

UV absorbents and industrial antioxidants are contaminants of emerging concern. However, their tissue distribution in marine mammals remains poorly characterized. This study investigated the tissue distribution of benzotriazole UV stabilizers (BZT-UVs), organic UV filters (UVFs), 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol (26DTBP), and aromatic secondary amines (Ar-SAs) in Atlantic walrus (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus) (blubber, muscle, and liver) and ringed seal (Pusa hispida) (blubber and liver) tissues collected around several communities in the Canadian Arctic. In both species, blubber accumulated higher level

Endocrine profiling of reproductive status and evidence of pseudopregnancy in the Pacific walrus (Odobenus rosmarus divergens).

Endocrine profiling is an increasingly utilized tool for detecting pregnancies in wild populations of mammals. Given the difficulty in calculating reproductive rates of Pacific walruses (Odobenus rosmarus divergens) the use of endocrine techniques for determining pregnancy rates could be particularly useful for management of the population. The goals of this study were to 1) determine if progesterone and total estrogen concentrations in ovarian tissues of female walruses could be used to determine reproductive state and 2) determine if walruses undergo a functional postpartum estrus, as is see

Evaluation of a digestion assay and determination of sample size and tissue for the reliable detection of Trichinella larvae in walrus meat.

A digestion assay was validated for the detection of Trichinella larvae in walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) meat, and appropriate samples for testing were determined using tissues from infected walruses harvested for food. Examination of muscles from 3 walruses showed that the tongue consistently contained approximately 2-6 times more larvae than the pectoral and intercostal muscles. Comparison of numbers of larvae in the root, body, and apex of the tongue from 3 walruses failed to identify a predilection site within the tongue, but the apex was considered an optimal tissue because of the high larva

From science to action and from action to science: the Nunavik Trichinellosis Prevention Program.

OBJECTIVES: During the 1980s, walrus-meat consumption caused infections with the parasite Trichinella nativa in Nunavik inhabitants. In response to these events, stakeholders set up the community-based Nunavik Trichinellosis Prevention Program (NTPP). The objectives of the present communication are to review the NTPP, describe how science and action were interwoven in its development and identify its assets and limitations. Study design. Descriptive study. METHODS: The NTPP relies on a pooled digestion assay of tongue samples taken from each harvested walrus. The public health recommendations

The occurrence and ecology of Trichinella in marine mammals.

Trichinella in marine mammals has a circumpolar arctic distribution and a narrow range of host species. It is commonly found in polar bears (Ursus maritimus), and increasingly in walruses (Odobenus rosmarus) where it presents a significant zoonotic hazard. This has resulted in the implementation of food safety programs in some arctic communities to test harvested walrus meat for Trichinella larvae prior to consumption. Trichinella has been reported infrequently in bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus) and ringed seals (Phoca hispida), and was once observed in a Beluga whale (Delphinapterus leuca

Walrus teeth as biomonitors of trace elements in Arctic marine ecosystems.

Effective biomonitoring requires an understanding of the factors driving concentrations of the substances or compounds of interest in the tissues of studied organisms. Biomonitoring of trace elements, and heavy metals in particular, has been the focus of much research; however, the complex roles many trace elements play in animal and plant tissues can make it difficult to disentangle environmental signals from physiology. This study examined the concentrations of 15 trace elements in the teeth of 122 Pacific walruses (Odobenus rosmarus divergens) to investigate the potential for walrus teeth a

Walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) Dentition and Tusk Extraction Techniques.

Walruses are characterized by their tusks, which are used for defense, ice-picking and hauling-out; however, these tusks are commonly worn in animals in captivity, resulting in pulpitis, pulp necrosis, and dental disease. The curative treatment is tusk extraction under general anesthesia. This article describes extraction techniques and mentions tusk protection using prosthetic crowns.

Behavioural thermoregulation in the Australian fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus).

Physiological and behavioural adaptations shape an animal's thermoregulatory capacity. Pinnipeds - true seals (phocids), eared seals (otariids, including fur seals and sea lions), and walruses (Odobenids) - must thermoregulate in both aquatic and terrestrial environments. Fur seals are unique, relying on dense, water-repellent fur and moderate blubber for insulation, while true seals, sea lions, and walruses have lower fur densities and thicker blubber. Fur traps air when wet to reduce heat loss at sea, but its insulating properties when dry on land, along with those of furless flippers, remai

Tissue-specific trace element accumulation, mercury and arsenic speciation in Atlantic walrus (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus).

Walruses (Odobenus rosmarus) are long-lived Arctic marine mammals and play an important ecological and cultural role in northern communities. We quantified and compared concentrations of 34 elements in blubber, liver, and muscle tissues from 97 Atlantic walruses (Odobenus r. rosmarus) harvested between 2019 and 2021 from two management stocks in the eastern Canadian Arctic (Foxe Basin and Hudson Bay-Davis Strait). Trace element profiles differed strongly among tissues, reflecting physiological roles in exposure and detoxification. Stock-level differences were evident for select elements, inclu

Ontogenetic changes and sexual dimorphism in the cranium and mandible of the Atlantic walrus (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus L.).

Walruses have been an important subsistence and cultural resource for humans and have been exploited for millennia across their distribution. This exploitation has contributed to severe declines in several populations and local extirpations. The study of walrus remains from archaeological sites can provide insights into past exploitation strategies and contribute to improving current conservation practices. The ability to differentiate disarticulated skeletal remains by age and sex can provide insights into past herd compositions. While sexing is a well-established approach for mandibles, a cl

Novel herpesvirus discovered in walrus liver.

A walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) born in an aquarium and hand-reared in Japan died at the age of 11 months. The affected animal showed fever and anorexia and had high levels of AST and ALT. Necropsy showed multiple necroses in the liver and adrenal glands and histological examination revealed necrotic lesions of the liver and adrenal cortex, both of which contained intranuclear inclusions. Electron microscopic analysis of the liver sample showed herpesvirus-like particles. High-throughput sequencing analysis of the liver sample and phylogenetic analysis of herpesvirus polymerase genes identified a
