Sperm hyperactivation drives a circling-and-wandering swimming behavior.

During migration through the female reproductive tract, sperm undergo physiological changes known as capacitation, including a motility transition termed hyperactivation. Hyperactivation is essential for various aspects of fertilization, particularly effective migration within the tract. However, how hyperactivation facilitates this migration remains elusive. Here, we profiled bull sperm hyperactivation and swimming in Newtonian and complex fluids, using microfluidic surfaces to mimic confinement of the tract. We identified three swim gaits: wandering (persistent random walks), circling, and a

Cognitive, behavioral, and autonomic correlates of mind wandering and perseverative cognition in major depression.

Autonomic dysregulation has been hypothesized to play a role in the relationships between psychopathology and cardiovascular risk. An important transdiagnostic factor that has been associated with autonomic dysfunction is perseverative cognition (PC), mainly present in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in the form of rumination. As the ability to adaptively let our mind wander without ruminating is critical to mental health, this study aimed to examine the autonomic concomitants of functional vs. dysfunctional intrusive thoughts in MDD. Ambulatory heart rate (HR) and variability (HRV) of 18 MDD

Do drives drive the train of thought?-Effects of hunger and sexual arousal on mind-wandering behavior.

Physiological needs that are currently unfulfilled are known to affect human cognition and behavior. The present study investigates whether and how the temporary activation of two primary physiological needs, namely hunger and sexual arousal, influence both the frequency and the contents of mind-wandering episodes. To induce hunger, one group of participants fasted for a minimum of five hours whereas another group of participants was exposed to audio material with explicit sexual content to provoke sexual arousal. Both groups as well as an additional control group, which had not received hunge

Eye-tracking and behavioral measures of mind-wandering relate to depressive symptoms in children: a preliminary study.

Elevated levels of mind-wandering in adults have been associated with both negative mood and depressive symptoms. Eye-tracking studies have further identified relationships between pupil dilation and mind-wandering as well as depression in adults. Although children tend to mind wander at similar rates as adults and adolescents, less is known about how both mind-wandering and pupillometry during cognitive tasks relate to depressive symptoms in children. In this preliminary study, we tested associations between mind-wandering, phasic and tonic pupillary responses, and depression symptoms in sixt

Associations of Adaptive Behavior and Wandering with Serious Injuries in Young Children with Autism: Study to Explore Early Development.

PURPOSE: Increased injury risk in children with autism may result from co-occurring developmental characteristics and challenges. We examined associations of adaptive behavior delay and wandering with injuries among children with autism. METHODS: Cross-sectional analyses were performed using data from 648 children aged 30-68 months with autism determined by standardized instruments. Associations of adaptive behavior delay and wandering with any parent-reported serious injury (i.e., resulting in emergency department visit or hospitalization) since birth were examined, adjusting for age and att

Longitudinal Examination of Wandering in Children and Adolescents With Autism.

Wandering - or leaving a supervised space and/or care of a responsible person - disproportionately affects children with autism and can lead to serious injury. We describe parent-reported wandering in children with autism in early childhood and adolescence and characterize wandering in adolescence. Of 258 teens with autism enrolled in the Study to Explore Early Development, caregivers reported that 45% never wandered, 41% wandered only in early childhood, and 14% wandered at least once in adolescence (including 9% that wandered at both time points). Childhood externalizing behavior problems we

Striatal dopamine metabolism correlated with frontotemporal glucose utilization in Alzheimer's disease: a double-tracer PET study.

We previously found that the rate of [l8F]6-fluoro-L-dopa (FDOPA) uptake into the striatum (the Ki value) in Alzheimer's disease (AD) correlated with cognitive function. Patients with wandering behavior had an increased level of D2 dopamine receptors. Decreased cerebral glucose utilization (CMRglc) in the parietal and temporo-parieto-occipital region is a well-known PET finding in AD. We investigated the relationship between the Ki value and regional CMRglc (rCMRglc) with reference to cognitive impairment and wandering behavior. We studied 10 AD patients with moderately severe dementia. Using

Physical Activity, Mind Wandering, Affect, and Sleep: An Ecological Momentary Assessment.

BACKGROUND: A considerable portion of daily thought is spent in mind wandering. This behavior has been related to positive (eg, future planning, problem solving) and negative (eg, unhappiness, impaired cognitive performance) outcomes. OBJECTIVE: Based on previous research suggesting future-oriented (ie, prospective) mind wandering may support autobiographical planning and self-regulation, this study examined associations between hourly mind wandering and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), and the impact of affect and daily sleep on these relations. METHODS: College-aged adults (N

Guiding the Ethics of Locator Devices in Dementia Care: Tutorial on Developing a Question-Based Ethical Framework.

BACKGROUND: Locator devices are increasingly being used to help manage wandering among people living with dementia. While these technologies can be beneficial, they also raise significant ethical questions. These ethical questions are faced in both the development and use of these devices. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to develop and present a question-based ethical framework that can guide both the use and the development of locator devices in dementia care, ensuring that stakeholder needs and values are balanced effectively. METHODS: A four-step process informed the framework's creat

[A case of depression manifesting incessant pacing and wandering following discontinuation of antipsychotic drugs due to neuroleptic malignant syndrome: a possible involvement of withdrawal akathisia].

A depressed 36-year-old woman manifesting a delusion of persecution was started on neuroleptics. In parallel with the increase of neuroleptics, she suffered from akathisia, such as wandering, and thereafter developed neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Thus, neuroleptics were discontinued. As a result, she manifested severer wandering, impairment of conversation, and unacceptable behavior (e.g. touching her stool) though neuroleptic malignant syndrome subsided. These symptoms improved following the administration of levomepromazine and amitriptyline. It seems difficult to regard these symptoms as

On the relation between mind wandering, PTSD symptomology, and self-control.

Here we examined the association between mind wandering, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomology, and self-control. In a large undergraduate sample (N = 5,387), we assessed trait-levels of spontaneous and deliberate mind wandering, self-control, and PTSD symptomology. Results indicated that, while PTSD symptomology was uniquely positively associated with spontaneous mind wandering, it was negatively associated with deliberate mind wandering and self-control. These findings suggest that the mechanism(s) underlying everyday mind wandering may also underlie PTSD symptomology and trauma

Cortical glucose metabolism in psychiatric wandering patients with vascular dementia.

The cerebral metabolic rate for glucose (CMRglc) in 18 patients with vascular dementia (VD) and 15 age-matched normal subjects was measured with positron emission tomography (PET) and the 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose technique. Nine of the 18 VD patients manifested abnormal wandering behavior with some psychiatric symptoms: they showed relatively spared CMRglc, which was higher than that of nonwandering patients, especially in the bilateral frontal lobes, left parietal lobe, left temporo-parieto-occipital region, left occipital lobe, and cerebellum. The results suggest that psychiatric wandering beh

Spatial Disorientation Under Dark Conditions Across Development in an Alzheimer's Disease Mouse Model.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with hippocampal neuropathology and cognitive impairments, including wandering behavior or becoming lost in a familiar environment. Wandering behavior is severe and manifests early in life for people with specific genetic mutations. Genetic mouse models of AD have been developed to characterize the onset and progression of behavioral deficits that represent human behaviors, such as wandering, to test the efficacy of therapeutics. It is not clear if current assessments of mouse models capture the onset of AD or a snapshot of its progression. Sequential ana

Behavioral and psychiatric manifestations in dementia patients in a community: caregiver burden and outcome.

The aim of the present study was to document behavioral disturbances in dementia patients in a sample not specifically referred to a clinic. Ninety patients with dementia in a community were studied in relation to the behavioral and psychiatric manifestations as perceived by their caregivers. They were categorized into two subgroups based on severity of the illness, namely mild and moderate-severe, for the purpose of comparison. There were 68 patients with Alzheimer disease, 10 with vascular dementia, and the remaining 12 formed a miscellaneous group. The frequency of the following behaviors in

Internet addiction and mind-wandering in Chinese college students: chain mediation roles of physical activity and self-control.

BACKGROUND: Against the backdrop of the deep integration of mobile internet technologies into university students' daily lives, concerns regarding the potential impact of internet addiction on cognitive functioning have been increasing, while mind-wandering, as an important manifestation of impaired attentional control, remains insufficiently understood in terms of its underlying mechanisms. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between internet addiction and mind-wandering among college students, along with the chain mediating roles of physical activity and self-control. Correlates of disruptive behaviors in nursing homes. A reanalysis.

This study reexamines factors associated with the occurrence of disruptive behaviors using a representative sample of nursing home residents in Rhode Island in 1984-1985. Four indicators of disruptive behaviors are examined using multivariate methods: evidence of any disruptive behaviors, abusive behavior, wandering, and noisiness. Results are compared with the 1989 study by Jackson et al., which was based on the same data. Findings indicate that the likelihood of exhibiting disruptive behaviors in nursing homes increases with the severity of cognitive impairment, ADL dysfunction, and incontin
