International review of psychiatry (Abingdon, England)2025eng
Armed conflicts are major global determinants of illness, producing acute and chronic burden across mental health, population wellbeing, and societal stability. Current surveillance highlights high lethality in Myanmar, Sudan, the Palestinian Territories, and the Russia-Ukraine regions, alongside persistent low-intensity violence in Afghanistan, Mexico, and Yemen. Beyond mortality and physical injury, conflicts generate complex psychological, social, and structural sequelae across the life span. Contemporary war psychiatry has expanded from a narrow focus on trauma to an integrated biopsychoso

Health is a precious asset, essential for both individuals and communities. The wars that have affected various parts of the world in recent years have had a detrimental impact on health, leading to malnutrition and an increased vulnerability to epidemic diseases among the population, especially the poorest. Hospitals and healthcare facilities themselves have become primary strategic targets in many war zones. The destruction of infrastructure and hospitals, along with challenges in obtaining clean water and access to medicines, has contributed to the resurgence of epidemic diseases in countri

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cardiovascular conditions and related risk factors are an important and common group of diseases. Stroke is a disease that requires rapid diagnosis and treatment, and there are significant inequalities in stroke diagnosis, treatment and follow-up between countries, regions, societies and economic levels. This inequality becomes even more evident in regions where war and turmoil continue. What is the goal of your paper? What questions did you seek to answer? This review aims to explore whether war and armed conflicts impact stroke and care and describe potential mechanisms an

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review maps psychological and psychosocial interventions aimed at reducing depressive symptoms in children and adolescents who continue to live within war- or armed conflict–affected zones. We sought to identify which approaches are specifically designed for depressive symptoms, how they are delivered in humanitarian contexts, and where robust evidence is still lacking. RECENT FINDINGS: Twenty-one studies published between 2005 and 2025 were identified across diverse settings including Palestine, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Nepal, and Northern Uganda. Most interven

Exposure to organophosphorus nerve agents, the most deadly chemical warfare agents, is possible in a variety of situations, such as destruction of chemical warfare agents, terrorist attacks, armed conflicts or accidents in research laboratories and storage facilities. Hundreds of thousands of tons of chemical munitions were disposed of at the sea in the post World War II period, with European, Russian, Japanese and US coasts being the most affected. Sulfur mustard, Lewisite and nerve agents appear to be the most frequently chemical warfare agents disposed of at the sea. Addressing the overall

The persistent conflict in Sudan has worsened the impacts of the prolonged droughts, destroying crops and livestock and severely undermining people's means of survival. Furthermore, the scarcity of water and fertile land has increased competition over resources between communities, further displacing populations. This displacement leads to worsening the crisis, straining resources, spreading disease and overwhelming healthcare. For instance, rainfall, which is one of the most devastating climate changes, can reach up to 427.70 mm in one city. Consequently, Sudan confronts widespread famine thr

Military operations in various parts of the world in the early 2000s are becoming more regionalized; new warfare tactics emerge, which makes it necessary to review and modify the neurosurgical care system. The article reviews the results of original studies on this issue and summarizes the experience of the US Army medical service in Afghanistan and Iraq. The article discusses the structure of sanitary losses, organization and scope of medical and evacuation neurosurgical measures, types and techniques of surgical interventions, and the rate of complications. We describe five levels of neurosu

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Vascular injuries to extremities are common in armed conflicts. Such kind of injury is associated with a high risk of critical ischemia, limb amputation, and high morbidity. There is a clinical challenge for the management of vascular injuries to extremities in ongoing warfare due to limited medical resources.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 34 years old male received a gunshot injury to both low extremities on March, 23rd 2022 in a battlefield area 30 km away from Kyiv city. CAT tourniquet was applied to stop the bleeding and the patient was transported to Level II by am

The ongoing Gaza War has resulted in significant loss of life and intensified an existing humanitarian crisis. Despite increasing demand for accurate data, mortality estimates remain challenging due to the inherent 'statistical fog of war'. Accurate quantification is hindered by incomplete reporting and uncertain age-sex distributions of casualties. Official death tolls are likely influenced by damaged infrastructure, security disruptions, and political motivations, complicating detailed demographic verification. Our study introduces a novel methodological approach-a Bayesian model incorporati

The evacuation timelines of Ukrainian casualties through the Operational Patient Care Pathway (OPCP) vary widely, ranging from minutes to days. Western Military reliance on air evacuation models has proven inefficient in the current conflict, dominated by sophisticated air defense and electronic warfare. This paper explores the adaptation of medical support in static warfare, focusing on the development of Subterranean Casualty Stabilization Points (ST CSP) by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). These facilities provide damage control resuscitation and damage control surgery close to the front

Avalanche accidents are frequently lethal events with an overall mortality of 23%. Mortality increases dramatically to 50% in instances of complete burial. With modern day dense networks of ambulance services and rescue helicopters, health workers often become involved during the early stages of avalanche rescue. Historically, some of the most devastating avalanche accidents have involved military personnel. Armed forces are frequently deployed to mountain regions in order to train for mountain warfare or as part of ongoing conflicts. Furthermore, military units are frequently called to assist

Orthopedic surgery has advanced through the demands of managing complex musculoskeletal trauma on the battlefield. The purpose of this review was to briefly summarize how successive conflicts have shaped principles and practice of orthopedic surgery-from wound management, fracture stabilization, limb salvage, prosthetics, and trauma systems-and to outline possible orthopedic input in future warfare and human exploration. From early empiricism in the Revolutionary War to organized military hospital systems in the Civil War, to the use of antibiotics and internal fixation in World War II, each a

BACKGROUND: Armed conflict fractures the systems that multiple sclerosis (MS) care depends on, yet MS-specific guidance for war is scarce. The aim of this study is to synthesize evidence on MS care during armed conflict and other crises, and to develop practical, crisis-ready recommendations to maintain treatment continuity, reduce inequities, and guide clinicians and policymakers.
METHODS: We reviewed peer-reviewed literature (2000-2025) on MS during conflicts; when MS-war data were scarce, we utilized transferable evidence from COVID-19 MS studies.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: War disrupts dise

The cholera epidemic in Yemen, which began in October 2016 and reached its peak in 2017, was the largest disease outbreak in modern history. Suspected cases topped 1 million, and there were more than 2,000 confirmed deaths in the first 8 months of the outbreak. Although cholera is an ancient disease, and there were other countries around the globe experiencing outbreaks at the same time as the outbreak in Yemen, Yemen's outbreak had a number of unique features. The outbreak spread at an unprecedented pace and has been directly linked to the country's ongoing armed conflict. In this article we

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the levels, types and barriers of post-conflict restoration of health infrastructure in war-affected health facilities in the Amhara region, Ethiopia.
RESULTS: Out of 180 health facilities, only 5(2.8%) were fully restored in health system infrastructures and service delivery. Eighty (54.4%) generators, 24(20.2%) water supply, 41(23.6%) furniture, 45(46.9%) ambulance and 27(16.2%) buildings infrastructure were not restored. Health information system devices were also damaged during the war. Among 145 health centers with looted or damaged desktop

The prolonged war in Gaza has led to the near-total collapse of the healthcare system, leaving over two million people without access to essential medical services, clean water, electricity, or basic sanitation. Many hospitals have been bombed or are barely functioning due to extreme constraints. Healthcare personnel are overwhelmed, injured, or forced to work under dangerous conditions. Essential medicines and vaccines are critically lacking. In this context, the risk of large-scale outbreaks of infectious diseases-such as cholera, hepatitis A, measles, and typhoid fever-is rapidly increasing

Upon invitation by the World Health Organization during the Gulf War, a task force "Scorpio" independent from the nations involved in the armed conflict was formed whose task was to determine whether, which and to what extent biological warfare agents had been used. risk assessment concluded that anthrax and Clostridium botulinum toxin were the major risks. The 21 civilian experts had rapidly to decide on the doctrine of operation, to assemble material which could be used and to be immunized or protected otherwise against the potential risks. Biological warfare agents may be used anywhere any

Malaria poses a significant public health risk worldwide, and the infection results from the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito. Many malaria-endemic regions face instability, often driven by wars, heightening the risk of infectious disease transmission. Malaria funding and targeted prevention are essential for reducing and eventually eradicating transmission. This article focuses on developing a compartmental mathematical model to study malaria infection dynamics, incorporating the effects of malaria prevention, funding, and war on health systems. We evaluate the model's basic repr
