Terebra steering in chalcidoid wasps.

Various chalcidoid wasps can actively steer their terebra (= ovipositor shaft) in diverse directions, despite the lack of terebral intrinsic musculature. To investigate the mechanisms of these bending and rotational movements, we combined microscopical and microtomographical techniques, together with videography, to analyse the musculoskeletal ovipositor system of the ectoparasitoid pteromalid wasp Lariophagus distinguendus (Förster, 1841) and the employment of its terebra during oviposition. The ovipositor consists of three pairs of valvulae, two pairs of valvifers and the female T9 (9th abdo

Take-off mechanisms in parasitoid wasps.

High-speed video analyses of the natural behaviour of parasitoid wasps revealed three strategies used to launch the insects into the air. Which strategy is the most energy efficient? In Pteromalus puparum, 92% of take-offs by were propelled entirely by movements of the middle and hind legs, which were depressed at their coxo-trochanteral and extended at their femoro-tibial joints. The front legs left the ground first, followed by the hind legs, so that the middle legs provided the final propulsion. Second, in other species of a similar mass, Cotesia glomerata and Leptopilina boulardi, all take

Biomechanics of substrate boring by fig wasps.

Female insects of diverse orders bore into substrates to deposit their eggs. Such insects must overcome several biomechanical challenges to successfully oviposit, which include the selection of suitable substrates through which the ovipositor can penetrate without itself fracturing. In many cases, the insect may also need to steer and manipulate the ovipositor within the substrate to deliver eggs at desired locations before rapidly retracting her ovipositor to avoid predation. In the case of female parasitoid ichneumonid wasps, this process is repeated multiple times during her lifetime, thus

Venoms of Parasitoid Wasps: Diversity, Functions, and Evolutionary Insights.

The venoms of parasitoid wasps are crucial for the successful development of their offspring within or on arthropod hosts because they manipulate host physiology and behavior. Recent advancements in high-throughput omics (e.g., genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics) have revolutionized the study of parasitoid wasp venoms. These rapidly developing technologies have provided significant insights into many aspects of venom biology. However, despite the rapid pace of venom protein discovery through venomics approaches, functional studies have lagged. We summarize the current state of venom pro

Large DNA Viruses That Parasitoid Wasps Transmit to Hosts.

Many types of viruses have been identified in parasitoid wasps and other Hymenoptera. Parasitoid wasps also transmit several viruses to hosts through the piercing ovipositors that females use to lay eggs. Most viruses that are known to be transmitted by parasitoids have large double-stranded DNA genomes. We summarize the range of interactions that have evolved between parasitoid wasps and the viruses they transmit. Some viruses are mechanically transmitted to hosts, which can reduce the fitness of wasp offspring. Others have evolved into beneficial symbionts or reproductive parasites that repl

Pharmacology and chemistry of the venoms of solitary wasps.

In this study certain activities of solitary wasp venoms collected from the Suez Canal area (Bembix oculata, Dielis collaris, and Scolia erythrocephala) were investigated. The effects of these venoms on different types of muscles were studied, and in addition, the chemical structures were studied by electrophoretic analysis. We found that the venoms affect different types of muscles (cardiac, skeletal, and smooth) in different ways. The effect of the venoms on heart muscle was rapid and led to bradycardia, an increase in R amplitude on ECG, and other cardiac disorders such as atrioventricular

Physiological selectivity and tolerance of social wasps exposed to Malathion.

Insect pest infestations are a worldwide problem as a result of human actions. Among them, Aedes aegypti stands out as vector of several diseases. Like other pests, A. aegypti has become resistant to the insecticide used for its control, thus harming the local fauna of non-target insects. Therefore, the aim of this study was to study the physiological selectivity of social wasps exposed to Malathion, as well as to investigate possible resistance to this insecticide. Adults of the swarming species Polybia platycephala and Protopolybia sedula and the independent species Polistes versicolor were

Egg volatiles of oak silkworm mediate defense against parasitoid wasps.

Most insects protect their eggs from natural enemies via physical coverings, yet defensive mechanisms of exposed eggs (i.e., those without such coverings), particularly those lacking toxins, remain largely unexplored. The oak silkworm (Antheraea pernyi) lays such exposed eggs, yet these eggs exhibit less parasitism than manually extracted washed eggs (MUWE) under laboratory conditions, raising the question of whether this defense operates in nature and how it functions. Here, field experiments showed that naturally laid unwashed eggs had significantly lower parasitism by three parasitoid speci

Amino acid synthesis loss in parasitoid wasps and other hymenopterans.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Insects utilize diverse food resources which can affect the evolution of their genomic repertoire, including leading to gene losses in different nutrient pathways. Here, we investigate gene loss in amino acid synthesis pathways, with special attention to hymenopterans and parasitoid wasps. Using comparative genomics, we find that synthesis capability for tryptophan, phenylalanine, tyrosine, and histidine was lost in holometabolous insects prior to hymenopteran divergence, while valine, leucine, and isoleucine were lost in the common ancestor of Hymenoptera. Subsequently, multiple loss events o

Laterally Transferred Gene Recruited as a Venom in Parasitoid Wasps.

Parasitoid wasps use venom to manipulate the immunity and metabolism of their host insects in a variety of ways to provide resources for their offspring. Yet, how genes are recruited and evolve to perform venom functions remain open questions. A recently recognized source of eukaryotic genome innovation is lateral gene transfer (LGT). Glycoside hydrolase family 19 (GH19) chitinases are widespread in bacteria, microsporidia, and plants where they are used in nutrient acquisition or defense, but have previously not been known in metazoans. In this study, a GH19 chitinase LGT is described from th

Brighter-colored paper wasps (Polistes dominula) have larger poison glands.

INTRODUCTION: Aposematism is a defense system against predators consisting of the toxicity warning using conspicuous coloration. If the toxin production and aposematic coloration is costly, only individuals in good physical condition could simultaneously produce abundant poison and striking coloration. In such cases, the aposematic coloration not only indicates that the animal is toxic, but also the toxicity level of individuals. The costs associated with the production of aposematic coloration would ensure that individuals honestly indicate their toxicity levels. In the present study, we exam

Optimal reproductive-skew models fail to predict aggression in wasps.

Optimal-skew models (OSMs) predict that cooperative breeding occurs as a result of dominants conceding reproductive benefits to subordinates, and that division of reproduction within groups reflects each cooperator's willingness and ability to contest aggressively for dominance. Polistine paper wasps are a leading model system for testing OSMs, and data on reproduction and aggression appear to support OSMs. These studies, however, measure aggression as a single rate rather than by the activity patterns of individuals. This leads to a potential error: if individuals are more likely to receive a

Why do nectar-foraging bees and wasps work upwards on inflorescences?

Wasps (Dolichovespula and Vespula spp.) worked predominantly upwards when foraging for nectar on inflorescences of the protogynous Scrophularia aquatica, in which the standing crop of nectar sugar per flower showed no clear pattern of vertical distribution up an inflorescence. Bumblebees taking nectar (Bombus hortorum visiting legally, and certain individuals of B. terrestris which positioned themselves head-upwards while taking nectar through holes bitten in the corolla) worked predominantly upwards on the racemose inflorescences of Linaria vulgaris, although the standing crop of nectar sugar

Waltzing with WASP.

Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) is an inherited immune deficiency that is marked by eczema, bleeding and recurrent infections. The lymphocytes and platelets of WAS patients display cytoskeletal abnormalities, and their T lymphocytes show a diminished proliferative response to stimulation through the T-cell receptor-CD3 complex (TCR-CD3). The product of the WAS gene, WAS protein (WASP), binds to the small GTPase Cdc42. Small GTPases of the Rho family are crucial for the regulation of the actin-based cytoskeleton. WASP and its relative NWASP might play an important role in regulating the actin cy

WASPs and WAVEs: from molecular function to physiology in hematopoietic cells.

The actin cytoskeleton is critically involved in a variety of cell functions. The Arp2/3 complex mediates branching of filamentous actin. The members of the Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (WASP) family are major regulators of the complex. As such, the family proteins are also involved in numerous aspects of cell biology. In this short review, we first define the expanding WASP family. Next, we compare the domain structure of the members, and explain the known or proposed functions of each domain or region. Finally, we demonstrate the well-characterized roles of the proteins in specific cellu

Venom proteins from endoparasitoid wasps and their role in host-parasite interactions.

Endoparasitoids introduce a variety of factors into their host during oviposition to ensure successful parasitism. These include ovarian and venom fluids that may be accompanied by viruses and virus-like particles. An overwhelming number of venom components are enzymes with similarities to insect metabolic enzymes, suggesting their recruitment for expression in venom glands with modified functions. Other components include protease inhibitors, paralytic factors, and constituents that facilitate/enhance entry and expression of genes from symbiotic viruses or virus-like particles. In addition, t
