Leptospirosis, water sports, and chemoprophylaxis.

Recreational activities, such as water sports and adventure travel, are emerging as an important risk factor for leptospirosis, a potentially fatal zoonosis. We report the clinical course of 2 patients who acquired leptospirosis through participation in water sports. Physicians caring for patients who participate in adventure travel involving water sports should be familiar with the risk factors for and diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of leptospirosis.

The significance of water in sport and weight control.

Intake of food and drink during exercise can be effective in enhancing performance, in so far as it prevents or ameliorates exercise-induced changes to body homeostasis. Loss of body fluids containing water and electrolytes during exercise is mostly by sweating. Sweat rates during a sporting event or activity will vary according to a number of factors, including the size of the athlete and his or her degree of acclimatization, the intensity of exercise, environmental conditions and the clothing worn. The mismatch of fluid intake and fluid losses may lead to a body water deficit. It has general

Aquatic sports dermatoses: Part 3. On the water.

The third of this three-part series on water-related sports dermatoses discusses skin changes seen in athletes who participate in sporting activities on top of or nearby water. While also susceptible to several of the freshwater and saltwater dermatoses discussed in parts one and two of the series, these athletes may present with skin changes unique to their particular sports. This updated and comprehensive review details those near-water dermatologic conditions commonly seen in sailors, rowers, fishermen, surfers, windsurfers, rafters, and water skiers, and will serve as a guide for dermatolo

Risk factors for water sports-related cervical spine injuries.

BACKGROUND: To examine risk factors associated with water sports-related cervical spine injuries (WSCSI). METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all patients admitted for WSCSI from 1993 to 1997 was performed. The severity of cervical spine injury was assessed by review of medical records and imaging studies. Mechanisms of injury and activities at the time of injury were noted to determine risk factors for cervical spine injuries caused by wave forced impacts (WFI) from activities such as bodysurfing and body boarding. These risks were compared with injuries incurred by shallow water dives (SWD

Craniofacial Injuries in Swimming and Water Sports: Implications for Prevention.

INTRODUCTION: Water-related recreational activities, including swimming and diving, are widespread. However, they carry a significant risk of craniofacial injuries. Despite the popularity of these activities, comprehensive data on injuries beyond drowning remain scant. This study addresses this gap by providing valuable epidemiological insight into the nature, prevalence, and demographic patterns of craniofacial injuries related to water sports activities. METHODS: The authors queried the NEISS database for craniofacial injuries related to swimming, diving, and water sports from 2013 to 2022.

The hydration ability of three commercially available sports drinks and water.

This paper compares the hydration ability of three commercially-available sports drinks with water under conditions of rest and exercise, using a deuterium dilution technique. For the rest group, 0.05g/kg of body weight of deuterium, contained in gelatine capsules, was ingested with one of the test solutions and saliva samples were collected every five minutes for an hour while the subject remained seated. The deuterium was administered as above for the exercise group but sample collection was during one hour of exercise on a treadmill at 55% of the subject's maximum heart rate. The enrichment

12-lead Holter monitoring in diving and water sports: a preliminary investigation.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the utility of 12-lead Holter monitoring underwater. METHODS: A Holter monitor, recording a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) underwater, was applied to 16 pre-trained volunteer scuba divers (13 males and three females). Dive computers were synchronized with the Holter recorder to correlate the ECG tracings with diving events. Our main objective was to demonstrate the utility of recording over a period of time a good quality 12-lead ECG underwater. The ECGs were analyzed for heart rate (HR), arrhythmias, conduction abnormalities and ischaemic events in relation to vari

The Use of the Water Treadmill for the Rehabilitation of Musculoskeletal Injuries in the Sport Horse.

In recent years, exercise on a water treadmill has come to have great relevance in rehabilitation and training centres for sport horses. Its use exploits certain physical properties of water, related to the fundamental principles of hydrodynamics, such as buoyancy, viscosity, hydrostatic pressure, and water temperature. These properties together with deliberate specification of the depth of the water and the velocity of the treadmill provide a combination of parameters that can be varied according to the purpose of the rehabilitation or training programme, the disease to rehabilitate, or the h

Injury Patterns in Water Sports on the Levantine Coast: A Single-Center Study.

IntroductionThe Levantine coast is characterized by environmental and demographic factors-microtidal regime, shifting sandbars, and crowded beaches. These may shape water-sport injury patterns, yet region-specific data are lacking. We described the types, anatomical sites, and sport-specific distribution of injuries along the Levantine coast.MethodsWe conducted a prospective observational study at a single Levantine coastal emergency department. Injuries from surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing/wing-foiling, swimming/freediving, kayaking, and motorized boards were recorded in real time, includin

Aquatic Sports Injuries: Biomechanics, Injury Patterns, and Imaging in Swimming, Water Polo, and Diving.

Aquatic sports, such as swimming, water polo, diving, and artistic swimming, combine endurance, strength, and flexibility with unique biomechanical demands, often leading to sport-specific injuries. Although water is a low-impact environment, the repetitive and high-intensity movements required in these disciplines increase the risk of both acute and overuse injuries. Swimmers frequently encounter shoulder overuse syndromes, water polo players face injuries from throwing and physical contact, and divers are at risk for spinal and wrist injuries during entry impacts. Imaging modalities, particu

Chemoreflex Control as the Cornerstone in Immersion Water Sports: Possible Role on Breath-Hold.

Immersion water sports involve long-term apneas; therefore, athletes must physiologically adapt to maintain muscle oxygenation, despite not performing pulmonary ventilation. Breath-holding (i.e., apnea) is common in water sports, and it involves a decrease and increases PaO2 and PaCO2, respectively, as the primary signals that trigger the end of apnea. The principal physiological O2 sensors are the carotid bodies, which are able to detect arterial gases and metabolic alterations before reaching the brain, which aids in adjusting the cardiorespiratory system. Moreover, the principal H+/CO2 sens
