Strabismus: an assessment of educational content on social media.

Purpose: To conduct a quality assessment of educational content on social media for patients with strabismus. Methods: TikTok and Instagram were searched for several hashtags. Educational videos meeting inclusion criteria under #strabismus and #lazyeye were analyzed using the Global Quality Scale (GQS), mDISCERN, and PEMAT-A/V tools. Statistical analysis was conducted to assess associations between video quality, metrics, and authorship. Results: Among the top 50 videos for #strabismus and #lazyeye on both platforms (n = 200), educational videos aimed at patients (n = 54) scored an average mDI

2024 Scholars' Research Symposium Abstract: Kindling Wellness: Creating a Student-Run Podcast Series on Medical Student Wellness.

INTRODUCTION: Research has consistently shown that the prevalence of burnout symptoms (such as emotional and physical exhaustion, cynicism, or lack of interest in schoolwork, the sense of incompetence, or the feeling that you cannot be effective) in medical students is greater than the prevalence in the general population. Students with preexisting anxiety, depression, mood disorder or other psychological distress are more vulnerable to burnout. It is estimated that at least half of U.S. medical students experience or are affected by burnout during their education. With the high rates of burno

Does YouTube include high-quality resources for training on laparoscopic and robotic radical prostatectomy?

PURPOSE: Our aim was to assess the educational quality of the YouTube video content related to laparoscopic and robotic radical prostatectomy (RP). METHODS: An objective scoring tool named as Prostatectomy Assessment and Competency Evaluation (PACE) score was used to measure and quantify seven critical steps in RP including bladder drop, preparation of the prostate, bladder neck dissection, posterior/seminal vesicle dissection, neurovascular bundle preservation, apical dissection, and urethro-vesical anastomosis. A five-point scale was used for grading the seven steps, where a score of 1 and

Solutions for Shared Resource Lab Remote Quality Control and Instrument Troubleshooting during a Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically affected shared resource lab (SRL) staff in-person availability at institutions globally. This article discusses the challenges of ensuring reliable instrument performance and quality data output while facility staff and external service provider on-site presence is severely limited. Solutions revolve around the adoption of remote monitoring and troubleshooting platforms, provision of self-service troubleshooting resources specific to facility instruments and workflows, development of an assistance contact policy, and ensuring efficiency of limited in-per

Female Representation and Quality Indicators in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Podcasts.

BACKGROUND: Podcasts have emerged as prominent tools for asynchronous medical education, widely adopted across training levels and specialties. Diverse representation strengthens medical discourse, making an evaluation of speaker demographics essential for understanding equity and quality in digital knowledge dissemination. This study systematically evaluates female representation and quality assurance indicators in anesthesiology and critical care podcasts, including longitudinal publication trends. METHODS: We systematically searched Apple Podcasts and Spotify using specialty-specific terms

Artificial intelligence-generated podcasts open new doors to make science accessible: a mixed-method evaluation of quality and the potential for science communication.

AIMS: Science podcasts have proved to be valuable mediums for medical education and science dissemination. Tools adopting rapidly evolving technologies such as generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) now enable us to create podcasts in a matter of minutes (e.g. NotebookLM, Jellypod). However, GenAI entails challenges, such as hallucinations, which could compromise the trustworthiness of generated content. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the quality of AI-generated podcasts and their potential for science communication. METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted a mixed-method evaluation of 1

Educational Impact of a Podcast Curriculum for Hematology/Oncology Fellows: Final Results of the Multicenter Cluster Randomized PODCAST-HOF Trial.

PURPOSE: Medical podcast integration into hematology/oncology fellowship curricula remains largely unstudied. We conducted a multicenter cluster randomized trial to evaluate the educational impact of a podcast-based curriculum (PC) when delivered alongside standard didactics compared with standard didactics alone. METHODS: Twenty-seven US Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited hematology/oncology fellowship programs were randomized to receive either PC plus standard didactics (podcast arm, n = 14) or standard didactics alone (control arm, n = 13). The PC included cura

Preferences and attitudes of physicians in India towards continuing medical education.

Introduction: Physicians in India display an enthusiasm for continuing medical education (CME), however a proper system for facilitation and organisation of CME activities is yet to evolve in the country. Methods: A questionnaire-based survey was conducted among 751 physicians from eight medical specialties across India and the data retrieved was analysed at individual physician and collective specialty-specific levels. Results: The surveyed physicians considered case presentations (73%), live speaker programmes (70%) and round-table meetings/focus group meetings (70%) as the most effective CM

Enhancing assessment for eating disorders: the impact of a podcast-based pre-treatment psychoeducation intervention.

This study reports the outcome of a low intensity pre-treatment intervention (a guided e-health podcast) for patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, delivered between assessment and the start of the full outpatient treatment programme. A case series design was used. A total of 254 patients at a specialist eating disorder service were offered a pre-treatment three-week psychoeducational intervention (Keeping Myself Safe; KMS), and 203 undertook the intervention. The intervention consisted of six podcasts (107 mins), an accompanying workbook, and a follow-up review appointment. Body

Teaching Acute Coronary Syndrome High-Risk ECG Interpretation and Clinical Decision-Making Through FOAMed Videos and Podcast Versus Print-Based Materials Among Emergency Care Providers: Randomized Controlled Mixed Methods Trial.

BACKGROUND: Accurate interpretation of high-risk acute coronary syndrome (ACS) electrocardiograms (ECGs) is essential for early diagnosis and timely reperfusion, yet substantial deficits persist across health care professions. Digital self-learning formats such as FOAMed (Free Open Access Medical Education) are widely used, but their effectiveness has rarely been evaluated for complex, high-risk ACS ECG patterns. Existing ECG education studies often focus on students or single professional groups and established ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) criteria, leaving newer guideli

A Practical Tutorial for Creating and Sharing Student-Led Educational Podcasts in Medical Education: The PodBases Experience.

BACKGROUND: Medical biochemistry and molecular genetics stand out as some of the most demanding courses for first-year medical students, who often require repeated exposure to complex pathways and molecular processes. To provide additional support in this early stage of training, we created PodBases, a peer-led educational podcast integrated into an academic mentoring program and made available through a widely accessible global audio-streaming platform. The goal was to offer brief, clinically oriented episodes that reinforced key concepts and complemented traditional teaching. APPROACH: The

Ears for examinations: a multicentre quasi-experimental evaluation of AI-generated revision podcasts on learning outcomes and retention among medical students.

BACKGROUND: Medical curricula overload necessitates efficient, self-directed learning strategies that can utilize 'dead time' for study. AI-generated audio offers a scalable resource for this purpose, yet evidence regarding its efficacy in low-resource settings is limited. This study evaluated the effectiveness and learner perceptions of AI-generated podcasts on learning outcomes and retention among Indian medical students. METHODS: A multicentre, quasi-experimental, mixed-methods explanatory sequential study was conducted at two geographically distinct medical colleges in India. Third-profes
