Wechsler Memory Scale performance in geropsychiatric patients.

Patients (N = 36) on a geropsychiatric acute care unit were administered the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS) at admission and discharge. The results indicated that there were significant increases in WMS scores from admission to discharge. Mean scores on the WMS were generally below those previously reported for normal geriatric groups, but above those reported for chronically ill or demented groups. As in previous studies, a significant positive relationship was found between education and WMS score, although no such relationship was found between age and WMS score. Overall, the results highlight

Wechsler Memory Scale performance of elderly psychiatric patients.

Examined the performance on the Wechsler Memory Scale of 50 elderly psychiatric patients with a functional illness and 50 with an organic brain syndrome. A significant separation of the two groups is observed, and the a-priori definition of abnormal memory impairment is found to be significantly associated with organic but not functional illness. It is concluded that the WMS is a useful test for the population despite its shortcomings in other areas.

Portuguese version of Wechsler Memory Scale-3rd edition's utility with demented elderly adults.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the utility of the Portuguese version of the Wechsler Memory Scale-3rd edition (WMS-III) with demented elderly people, namely its capacity to detect and discriminate between subcortical vascular dementia (SVD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). We assessed early demented patients (SVD = 16; AD = 36) aged 65 or older who were compared to a control group (n = 40). Both clinical groups were adequately matched in terms of disease severity, overall cognitive functioning, depressive symptomatology, and pre-morbid intelligence. Between-group's differences were evalu

Confirmatory factor analysis of the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised in a mixed clinical population.

Previous exploratory factor analyses (EFA) of the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised (WMS-R) have yielded highly disparate factor structures, while the few reported confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) of this instrument have been more consistent. The present study employed a CFA approach to identify the factor structure of the WMS-R in a mixed clinical sample of 306 patients, the majority of whom had sustained mild, diffuse brain injury. Consistent with previous CFA studies, the present study found that a three-factor solution (attention/concentration, immediate memory, delayed recall) fit the data

"Wineglass" confabulations among brain-damaged alcoholics on the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised visual reproduction subtest.

Confabulation is a clinically well-documented accompaniment of selective types of memory impairment, especially in brain-damaged alcoholics. This study reports specific occurrences of visual confabulation consisting of spontaneous alterations of Card D of the Visual Reproduction subtest of the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised. The resemblance of a wineglass was fashioned by a 90-degree rotation into a "bowl and stem", observed in six of 30 brain-damaged alcoholics. There were no such instances in 132 other patients, including alcoholic controls, those with Parkinson's Disease, temporal lobe epile

Necessity of normative data on the Japanese version of the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised Logical Memory subtest for old-old people.

AIM: Episodic memory is vulnerable to deterioration in people suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Currently, the Logical Memory (LM) subtest of the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised (WMS-R) is used internationally as an operational definition to identify people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). However, the Japanese version of the LM has not been adequately normalized for old-old people. Therefore, norms of the LM for people aged 75 years and over are required, and the effects of sex, age and education on performance were evaluated. METHODS: A total of 50 (27 female and 23 male) participants

Detection of noncredible cognitive performance with Wechsler Memory Scale-IV measures in mild traumatic brain injury litigants.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the operating characteristics of selective measures on the Wechsler Memory Scale-IV (WMS-IV) to predict noncredible neurocognitive dysfunction in a sample of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) litigants. METHOD: Participants included 110 adults who underwent a comprehensive neuropsychological examination. Criterion groups were formed based upon their performance on stand-alone measures of cognitive performance validity testing (PVT). RESULTS: Participants failing two stand-alone PVTs exhibited significantly lower scores across all WMS-IV dependent variables of inter

Performance on selected visual and auditory subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scale-Fourth Edition during laboratory-induced pain.

Although chronic pain patients commonly report problems with concentration and memory, recent research indicates that induced pain alone causes little or no impairment on several Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV) subtests, suggesting that cognitive complaints in chronic pain may be attributable to factors other than pain. The current studies examined potential effects of induced pain on Wechsler Memory Scale-Fourth Edition (WMS-IV) visual working memory index (VWM) subtests (Experiment 1, n = 32) and on the immediate portions of WMS-IV auditory memory (IAM) subtests (E

Extended normative data for the Logical Memory subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scale--Revised: responses from a sample of cognitively intact elderly medical patients.

66 cognitively intact geriatric medical patients (ages 70 to 99; M = 77 yr.) were given the Logical Memory subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scale--Revised to extend normative data. 43 women and 23 men, 35 white and 31 black persons made up this urban geriatric sample. A review of patients' medical histories and Mattis' Dementia Rating scores of 129 or greater were used to ensure a sample of cognitively intact patients. Analyses showed that Logical Memory scores were uncorrelated with education, race, sex, or age.

Differential Effects of the Factor Structure of the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised on the Cortical Thickness and Complexity of Patients Aged Over 75 Years in a Memory Clinic Setting.

The Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised (WMS-R) is one of the internationally well-known batteries for memory assessment in a general memory clinic setting. Several factor structures of the WMS-R for patients aged under 74 have been proposed. However, little is known about the factor structure of the WMS-R for patients aged over 75 years and its neurological significance. Thus, we conducted exploratory factor analysis to determine the factor structure of the WMS-R for patients aged over 75 years in a memory clinic setting. Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was calculated from single-photon emissio

Intellectual function and memory in children with moyamoya disease: relationship between Wechsler Intelligence Scale and Benton Visual Retention Test scores and regional cerebral blood flow.

OBJECTIVE: Intellectual function declines in about 30% of children with moyamoya disease (MMD). Memory function underpins higher order brain function, but the relationship between intellectual function and memory in pediatric MMD patients has not been well studied. This study aimed to investigate correlations between scores on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) and the Benton Visual Retention Test (BVRT), a visual memory test that can be administered to children, in children with MMD. Relationships between intellectual function or memory and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF)

Neuropsychological assessment of children and adolescents with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Neuropsychological assessments of adults with SLE have shown cognitive impairment, sequential processing deficits, memory loss, increased incidence of left handedness, learning disabilities and emotional distress compared with healthy individuals or subjects with other medical conditions. Neuropsychological testing regarding these variables in children and adolescents with SLE has been infrequently reported. For this study, eight children with SLE (age 9-17 years at diagnosis) were assessed with neuropsychological testing at a median of 10.5 months (range 1 week to 30 months) after diagnosis.

Deficits in verbal declarative memory function in women with childhood sexual abuse-related posttraumatic stress disorder.

Several studies have shown deficits in verbal declarative memory function in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Most of these studies have been performed in men with combat-related PTSD compared with healthy subjects; relatively little is known about memory function in women with abuse-related PTSD, or whether these effects are specific to PTSD or are a nonspecific outcome of exposure to early abuse. The purpose of this study was to assess declarative memory function in women with and without a history of early childhood sexual abuse and PTSD. Forty-three women with and without a history of

A comparison of memory function following local and general anaesthesia for extraction of senile cataract.

The memory performance of 60 female patients, scheduled for either local or general anaesthesia and extraction of senile cataract, was investigated. Six subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scale and four items of memory tests according to Luria were performed. One week postoperatively there was a diminution in the performance of the Wechsler Memory Scale and Luria tests. Comparison of the pre- and postoperative diminutions between the local and general anaesthesia groups was statistically significant only in the Luria tests. According to this study general anaesthesia does not affect memory functi
