Performance on Wechsler intelligence scales in children with Tourette syndrome.

BACKGROUND: There is some evidence that Tourette syndrome is associated with cognitive disabilities. AIMS: To examine the cognitive performance of a clinical cohort of children with Tourette syndrome. METHODS: 266 children with Tourette syndrome have been examined with Wechsler Intelligence Scales. The presence of the co-morbidities attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) was assessed using validated diagnostic instruments. Eighty healthy controls matched a part of the TS cohort. RESULTS: The children with Tourette syndrome had a mean verbal I

[Adaptation of Wechsler intelligence scales for children (WISC) to Argentinian subjects].

In this paper some objections were made regarding the order in which the elements in the Wechsler Intelligence Scale subtests for children are introduced, as it may prove wrong for Argentinian children. Besides it is important to specify which are the items that--due to their being in close relation to cultural characteristics--turn out to be irrelevant or inadequate for these subjecs. The sample consisted of one hundred pupils belonging to different social and cultural levels--attending the highest grade in Primary School--whose ages range from twelve to thirteen. These pupils have been given

Wechsler Memory Scale performance in geropsychiatric patients.

Patients (N = 36) on a geropsychiatric acute care unit were administered the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS) at admission and discharge. The results indicated that there were significant increases in WMS scores from admission to discharge. Mean scores on the WMS were generally below those previously reported for normal geriatric groups, but above those reported for chronically ill or demented groups. As in previous studies, a significant positive relationship was found between education and WMS score, although no such relationship was found between age and WMS score. Overall, the results highlight

Wechsler Memory Scale performance of elderly psychiatric patients.

Examined the performance on the Wechsler Memory Scale of 50 elderly psychiatric patients with a functional illness and 50 with an organic brain syndrome. A significant separation of the two groups is observed, and the a-priori definition of abnormal memory impairment is found to be significantly associated with organic but not functional illness. It is concluded that the WMS is a useful test for the population despite its shortcomings in other areas.

Accounting for Intraindividual Profiles in the Wechsler Intelligence Scales Improves the Prediction of School Performance.

IQ scores are often used to predict school performance. However, for children with learning disabilities, the predictive validity of IQ scores appears to be low. In the fourth and fifth versions of the Wechsler Intelligence Scales for Children (WISC), new ancillary indices were introduced. The General Ability Index (GAI) is a broad measure of fluid reasoning with verbal, visual-spatial, and figural test items. By contrast, the Cognitive Proficiency Index (CPI) combines different executive functions known to be frequently affected in children with dyslexia, ADHD, or combined learning disorders.

On a practitioner's need of further development of Wechsler scales. Adaptive Intelligence Diagnosticum (AID 2).

Wechsler's intelligence test-batteries are still popular yet suffer from psychometric shortcomings and lack a certain content improvement and enlargement. In this paper a new approach will be presented that suits traditional Wechsler-testing. The approach in question is the Adaptive Intelligence Diagnosticum (AID 2; Kubinger & Wurst, 2000). Due to it's "branched testing" design, AID 2 works out to be more economical and in this regard also offers other advantages, such as parallel tests and short forms. AID 2 offers a method of survey for identifying specific developmental disorders or learnin

Estimation of the intelligence quotient using Wechsler Intelligence Scales in children and adolescents with Asperger syndrome.

Asperger syndrome (AS) patients show heterogeneous intelligence profiles and the validity of short forms for estimating intelligence has rarely been studied in this population. We analyzed the validity of Wechsler Intelligence Scale (WIS) short forms for estimating full-scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) and assessing intelligence profiles in 29 AS patients. Only the Information and Block Design dyad meets the study criteria. No statistically significant differences were found between dyad scores and FSIQ scores (t(28) = 1.757; p = 0.09). The dyad has a high correlation with FSIQ, good percent

Wechsler Scale Intelligence Testing in Males with Dystrophinopathies: A Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Intelligence scores in males with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and Becker Muscular Dystrophy (BMD) remain a major issue in clinical practice. We performed a literature review and meta-analysis to further delineate the intellectual functioning of dystrophinopathies. METHOD: Published, peer-reviewed articles assessing intelligence, using Wechsler Scales, of males with DMD or BMD were searched from 1960 to 2022. Meta-analysis with random-effects models was conducted, assessing weighted, mean effect sizes of full-scale IQ (FSIQ) scores relative to normative data (Mean = 100, Stan

Adaptation of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-IV (WISC-IV) for Vietnam.

Intelligence testing is used for many purposes including identification of children for proper educational placement (e.g., children with learning disabilities, or intellectually gifted students), and to guide education by identifying cognitive strengths and weaknesses so that teachers can adapt their instructional style to students' specific learning styles. Most of the research involving intelligence tests has been conducted in highly developed Western countries, yet the need for intelligence testing is as or even more important in developing countries. The present study, conducted through t

A neuropsychological approach to the Bannatyne recategorization of the Wechsler Intelligence Scales in adults with learning disabilities.

An investigation was conducted of the diagnostic ability of the Bannatyne recategorization of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) into spatial, verbal-conceptual, and sequential components for adults with learning disabilities. A comparison among neuropsychological, intelligence, and achievement test data was made to evaluate the applicability of this recategorization. The Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery (LNNB), the WAIS-R, and the Wide Range Achievement Test-Revised (WRAT-R) were administered to 103 adult subjects with learning disabilities. The LNNB scales were c

Rapidly-administered short forms of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-3rd edition.

Although the Wechsler Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) is a common component of most neuropsychological evaluations, there are many clinical situations where the complete administration of this battery is precluded by various constraints, including limitations of time and patient compliance. These constraints are particularly true for dementia evaluations involving elderly patients. The present study reports data on two short forms particularly suited to dementia evaluations, each requiring less than 20min of administration time. One of the short forms was previously validated in dementia for the WAIS-R [

Confirmatory factor analysis of the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised in a mixed clinical population.

Previous exploratory factor analyses (EFA) of the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised (WMS-R) have yielded highly disparate factor structures, while the few reported confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) of this instrument have been more consistent. The present study employed a CFA approach to identify the factor structure of the WMS-R in a mixed clinical sample of 306 patients, the majority of whom had sustained mild, diffuse brain injury. Consistent with previous CFA studies, the present study found that a three-factor solution (attention/concentration, immediate memory, delayed recall) fit the data

Do the Wechsler scales underestimate the difference between verbal and performance abilities in children with language-related disorders?

The present paper examines the validity of the Wechsler scales with children with language-related disorders, with whom the scales were not originally normed. The general question is whether we can take measures of IQ, normed with a normal sample, and then validly use them as indicators of the same constructs with samples significantly different from the normed sample. In previous papers it was pointed out that the pattern structurally simple > moderately complex > complex tests can be observed in their IQ profiles within both the Verbal scale and the Performance scale. In this paper, it is hy

Learning disability in adults: a comparison of two indices of differential cognitive impairment derived from the Wechsler scales.

Two indices descriptive of patterns of differential cognitive impairment have been derived from principal component analyses of the normative data of the Wechsler scales for adults (WAIS-R) and children (WISC-R), respectively. The former index is sensitive to the test-specific cognitive effects of unilateral cerebral damage in adults. The latter accurately describes the pattern of subtest scores produced by learning-disabled children. The present study reviews the available WAIS and WAIS-R data from adults with learning disability in order to determine which of these two indices more precisely

Relationship between the Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale IV in adults with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Diagnoses of intellectual disability (ID) are based on three criteria: significant impairments in intellectual functioning, concurrent deficits in adaptive behaviour, and both being acquired in the developmental period. Adaptive behaviour was formally incorporated into the diagnosis in 1959; the rationale being that IQ and adaptive behaviour were different constructs that independently contribute to the diagnosis. However, there are limited data on the relationship between IQ and adaptive behaviour and especially so for adults who have ID. The aim of this study was to investigate t

Multivariate genetic analysis of Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children--Revised (WISC-R) factors.

Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children--Revised (WISC-R) factor scores (Verbal Comprehension, Perceptual Organization, and Freedom from Distractibility) were obtained from 574 twin pairs in the Colorado Reading Project and subjected to multivariate genetic analysis. Variances were partitioned into components common to the three WISC-R factors and to those specific to each factor. Substantial commonality, both genetic and environmental, was found among the three factors. The full model fit the data well, and estimates of heritability and environmentality indicated that about half of the pheno

Portuguese version of Wechsler Memory Scale-3rd edition's utility with demented elderly adults.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the utility of the Portuguese version of the Wechsler Memory Scale-3rd edition (WMS-III) with demented elderly people, namely its capacity to detect and discriminate between subcortical vascular dementia (SVD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). We assessed early demented patients (SVD = 16; AD = 36) aged 65 or older who were compared to a control group (n = 40). Both clinical groups were adequately matched in terms of disease severity, overall cognitive functioning, depressive symptomatology, and pre-morbid intelligence. Between-group's differences were evalu
