The neuropharmacological activities of the methanolic and aqueous extract of Wedelia calendulacea stem were screened in rats and mice. The extracts effect on pentobarbital-induced sleeping time, pentylenetetrazole- and styrychnine-induced seizure, spontaneous motor activity, exploratory behaviour, and rota-rod performance (motor coordination) were evaluated. The methanolic extract (20 and 50 mg/kg, i.p.) and aqueous extract (200 and 500 mg/kg, i.p.) produced a significant (p<0.001) prolongation of pentobarbital-induced sleeping time, and reduced the SMA and exploratory behaviour. The extract p

A group of 342 beef calves, corralled in the Patagonia region of Argentina, were fed alfalfa hay that had been inadvertently contaminated with Wedelia glauca. A total of 147 (43%) calves died within 4 days. Pathologic findings in 2 calves were diffuse centrilobular hepatic necrosis and hemorrhage with edema in the gallbladder, common bile duct, and choledochoduodenal junction. Epidermal fragments of W. glauca were identified in rumen contents by microscopy. Intact W. glauca plants and leaf fragments were found in the hay. Patches of defoliated W. glauca were also identified in the alfalfa past

The hepatoprotective effects of a Taiwanese crude herb, Hwang-hua-mih-tsay (Wedelia chinensis (Osbeck) Merr.), were investigated. Acute hepatitis was induced by three hepatotoxins: carbon tetrachloride and acetaminophen in mice, and D(+)-galactosamine in rats. After treatment with W. chinensis (300 mg/kg, p.o.) at 2, 6 and 10 hours, a reduction in the elevation of serum glutamate oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) and glutamate pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) levels was observed at 24 hrs after hepatotoxins were administered. These serological observations were confirmed by histopathological examinat

Herein, we report a concise and efficient method for the synthesis of p-hydroxyphenyl caffeate, a novel natural caffeic acid ester derivative isolated from Wedelia trilobata. The key feature of this synthesis is the Verley-Doebner modification of the Knoevenagel condensation of the p-hydroxyphenyl malonate intermediate. The synthesized p-hydroxyphenyl caffeate enhanced interleukin 2 production by murine lymph node T cells, and suppressed interleukin 13 production by murine epidermal T cells. This implies that p-hydroxyphenyl caffeate might be a novel immunomodulatory drug candidate, specifical

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a chronic respiratory condition characterized by progressive deterioration in lung function and persistent symptoms, particularly dyspnea, which can lead to death. Inflammation is important in COPD pathogenesis because it causes persistent inflammatory responses in the respiratory tract. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate H2O extracts derived from Wedelia (Sphagneticola trilobata) and Sembung Rambat (Mikania micrantha), respectively, as anti-inflammatory agents and to analyze the metabolite profiles contained in the extracts. The results

Colorectal cancer remains a global health challenge due to its high mortality and therapy resistance. While Wedelia trilobata (L.) (WT) exhibits pharmacological potential, its specific mechanisms against this cancer are not fully understood. We investigated the anticancer effects of W. trilobata leaf ethanol extract and its n-hexane and chloroform fractions on HT-29 cells. The WT extract significantly inhibited proliferation by inducing G1/S phase arrest and downregulating PCNA mRNA. It triggered substantial DNA damage (increased γ-H2AX) and suppressed the mitogen-activated protein kinase (ERK

Malaria is responsible for more deaths around the world than any other parasitic disease. Due to the emergence of strains that are resistant to the current chemotherapeutic antimalarial arsenal, the search for new antimalarial drugs remains urgent though hampered by a lack of knowledge regarding the molecular mechanisms of artemisinin resistance. Semisynthetic compounds derived from diterpenes from the medicinal plant Wedelia paludosa were tested in silico against the Plasmodium falciparum Ca2+-ATPase, PfATP6. This protein was constructed by comparative modelling using the three-dimensional st

In the present study, the binding affinity of 52 bioactive secondary metabolites from Wedelia trilobata towards the anti-apoptotic B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) protein (PDB: 2W3L) structure was identified by using in silico molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation. The molecular docking results demonstrated that the binding energies of docked compounds with Bcl-2 protein ranged from -5.3 kcal/mol to -10.1 kcal/mol. However, the lowest binding energy (-10.1 kcal/mol) was offered by Friedelin against Bcl-2 protein when compared to other metabolites and the standard drug Obatoclax (-8.4 k

Acid rain and invasive plants have quintessential adverse impacts on terrestrial ecosystems. As an environmentally safe method for disposal of invasive plants, we tested the effect of biochar produced from these plants in altering soil deterioration under acid rain as compared with lime. Given the impacts of the feedstock type and soil properties on the response of soil to the added biochar, we hypothesized that the microbial community and functions would respond differently to the charred invasive plants under acid rain. A pot experiment was conducted to examine the response of soil microbiom

Natural products, especially those from medicinal plants, have been increasingly attractive to researchers. Wedelolactone (WL) is a natural coumestan that was first isolated from Wedelia Chinensis. The past decades have seen an increase in the pharmacological reports on this compound, which show that WL possesses anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antitumor and anti-osteoporosis activities, as well as protective effects on organ damages. This review integrates the recent progresses available on its pharmacological effects both in vitro and in vivo, and highlights its potential uses i

BACKGROUND: The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, is one of the most dangerous invasive species in the world. Fire ants can spread by hiding among plant material and soil that are transported from infested areas in vehicles and vessels. Therefore, efficient repellents may be used to prevent fire ants from infesting transported goods. Although some fire ant repellants have been identified, novel, cost-effective and environmentally friendly materials for fire ant control are still needed. Recent studies with other model insects have suggested readily available, non-toxic alternatives (e

Wedelolactone (WDL) is a coumestan present in the plants Eclipta prostrata and Wedelia calendulacea which are used for treatment of a multitude of health problems in traditional medicine. It has previously been shown that WDL exerts antiviral activity against human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis C virus. In this study, we investigated the effect of WDL on lytic human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection. We demonstrate a strong interference with HCMV replication as analyzed in multi-round replication settings. A more detailed analysis of the underlying mechanisms revealed that WDL acts at tw

Dandruff is a chronic scalp condition and the mildest form of seborrheic dermatitis, associated with microbial dysbiosis primarily involving Malassezia furfur and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Conventional anti-dandruff treatments are often limited by recurrence and reliance on synthetic antifungal agents. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a synergistic, oil-based herbal formulation with antimicrobial activity against dandruff-causing microorganisms. The herbal constituent, Eucalyptus citriodora (EC) oil, individually signifies its efficacy against key dandruff-causing microbes, while Cen
