Participants were 130 obese women with a mean age of 41.1 +/- 8.4 years and a mean weight of 97.9 +/- 13.5 kg, who reported having undertaken a mean lifetime total of 4.7 +/- 1.2 major diets on which they had lost a mean total of 45.9 +/- 21.4 kg. Participants with a severe history of weight cycling had a significantly younger age of onset of their obesity than did mild cyclers and reported initiating dieting at a significantly younger age and lower weight. No evidence, however, was found that weight cycling was associated with greater reports of depression or other psychopathology; nor was it

PURPOSE: Weight cycling is a phenomenon characterized by fluctuating body weight that is commonly observed in individuals employing intentional weight loss methods. Despite its prevalence, the impact of weight cycling on health remains equivocal. The current investigation aimed to examine the effects of weight cycling on liver health.
METHODS: The weight cycling model was established by switching the feeding method of mice between ad libitum (AL) and restricted intake (DR or 60% of AL) of the breeding diet to cause weight gain and weight loss, respectively. The weight cycling model comprised

BACKGROUND: Obesity is associated with low-grade chronic inflammation attributed to dysregulated production, release of cytokines and adipokines and to dysregulated glucose-insulin homeostasis and dyslipidemia. Nutritional interventions such as dieting are often accompanied by repeated bouts of weight loss and regain, a phenomenon known as weight cycling (WC).
METHODS: In this work we studied the effects of WC on the feed efficiency, blood lipids, carbohydrate metabolism, adiposity and inflammatory markers in C57BL/6 male mice that WC two or three consecutive times by alternation of a high-fa

BACKGROUND: Controversy exists about whether weight cycling increases morbidity and mortality.
METHODS: To assess the independent association of weight cycling with mortality, we conducted a prospective study of 44 882 middle-aged or older women in the Nurses' Health Study who provided information on intentional weight losses between 1972 and 1992, survived until at least 1994, had a body mass index (calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared) of at least 17, and had no history of cancer (other than nonmelanoma skin cancer) or heart disease. Women who reported they

Cardiometabolic diseases, including cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D), are the leading cause of death globally. Because T2D and obesity are strongly associated, weight loss is the cornerstone of treatment. However, weight loss is rarely sustained, which may lead to weight cycling, which is associated with increased mortality risk in patients with T2D. Meta-analyses show that weight loss is not generally associated with reduced mortality risk in T2D, whereas weight cycling is associated with increased all-cause and CVD mortality. This may be attributable in part to increase

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of weight cycling (as defined by the frequency and magnitude of intentional weight loss) on bone mineral density and bone mineral content in obese sedentary women.
RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Bone mineral content and density measured by DXA, submaximal physical fitness assessment, nutrient intake, oral contraceptive use, and weight-cycling history were assessed in 195 healthy, overweight sedentary women (age, 21 to 45 years; body mass index, 27 to 40 kg/m(2)) before beginning a behavioral weight-loss intervention.
RESULTS: A

The prevalence of obesity is rising around the world, as the number of subjects dieting and experiencing weight loss followed by unintentional weight regain, the so-called weight cycling (WC). In this narrative review we sought to reveal the effects of WC on body composition as well as to evaluate if WC may represent a risk factor for sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity. The relative changes in lean and fat compartments after WC have been shown to depend on several factors as the degree of energy deficit, the rate of weight loss and baseline body weight, as well as sex, age, physical activity an

The hypothesis that a history of one or more weight reductions and regains (weight cycling) is associated with lower site-specific bone mineral density (BMD) was examined in 169 premenopausal women, aged 29-46 years. Data on the previous 10-years' weight cycling history, present weight-bearing physical exercise, number of deliveries, present use of contraceptive pills or hormone-releasing coils, age at menarche and present menstrual status were collected by a self-administered questionnaire. Dietary intake was calculated from food records. The areal BMD (g/cm2) was measured with dual-energy X-

BACKGROUND: Weight cycling is the repeated episodes manifesting intentional weight loss and subsequent unintentional weight gain. Whether the frequency and magnitude of weight cycling is associated with colorectal cancer risk independent of body mass index (BMI) remains unknown.
METHODS: Two prospective cohort studies, Nurses' Health Study I and Health Professionals Follow-up Study, followed 85,562 participants from 1992 to 2014. Participants completed a questionnaire regarding the frequency and magnitude of intentional weight loss in the past 4 years at the baseline. Hazard ratios (HRs) and

OBJECTIVE: Relationships were examined between hostility, weight status, weight cycling, dieting behaviors, and nutrition attitudes.
METHOD: Data were derived from the RENO Diet-Heart Study (RDHS), a 5-year prospective natural history (descriptive) study of weight fluctuations, behavior patterns, and cardiovascular (CVD) risk factors. Overweight versus normal-weight and weight-cycling versus non-weight-cycling men and women were compared on overt and covert hostility.
RESULTS: Overweight subjects scored significantly higher than normal-weight individuals on covert but not overt hostility. Si

Motivated by the desire to provide information useful in the design analysis of bicycle frames, the hypothesis tested was that a simple linear model would relate the maximum magnitudes of rider-induced loads to rider weight. Rider-induced loads are loads developed as a result of weight and muscular actions during pedalling. To test this hypothesis, five riders spanning a wide weight range rode a bicycle unrestrained on a treadmill. Dynamometers measured six components of pedal loads and five components of both seat and handlebar loads while riders rode three common cycling situations--seated c

Weight cycling (WC), characterized by repeated weight loss and regain, has been associated with adverse health effects, though evidence remains inconsistent. The aim of this review is evaluating WC protocols used in rodent studies, with a particular focus on how variations in experimental design and cycle periodization influence metabolic outcomes. All included studies were conducted in C57BL/6 mice, with protocols alternating between normocaloric and hypercaloric diets, in a variety of protocols, mainly in the periodization of cycles, diet composition, and sex of the animals. Despite evidence

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to monitor acute changes in body weight and hydration status—measured via urine-specific gravity (USG) and urine color (UC)—in elite-level kickboxers during a real-world competitive environment. The research sought to provide critical insights into current weight-management practices and the prevalence of hypohydration during the pre-competition period. METHODS: Using a cohort repeated-measures design, ten elite male kickboxers (age: 20.5 ± 2.8 years) were monitored at four distinct time points: one week before the competition (T1), one day before the official weigh

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Alternating periods of excessive and restrained eating results in weight cycling ('yo-yo' effect), a suspected risk factor for eating behavior dysregulation such as binge eating. The hypothesis that recurrent diet alternation alters hedonic feeding regulation by changing either or both intestinal microbiota and brain neuronal and glial regulation in mouse is tested.
METHODS: C57BL/6 mice undergo 3 cycles of 1 week of western diet (WD) separated by 2 weeks of chow diet (CYCL group) or remain under chow diet (CTRL group).
RESULTS: CYCL mice exhibit weight cycling, with enhan

Lifestyle interventions remain the treatment of choice for patients with obesity and metabolic complications, yet are difficult to maintain and often lead to cycles of weight loss and regain (weight cycling). Literature on weight cycling remains controversial and we therefore investigated the association between weight cycling and metabolic complications using preexistent obese mice. Ldlr-/-.Leiden mice received a high-fat diet (HFD) for 20 weeks to induce obesity. Subsequently, weight-cycled mice were switched between the healthy chow diet and HFD for four 2-week periods and compared to mice

OBJECTIVES: Weight cycling is linked with advanced breast cancer diagnosis, increased risk of cancer reoccurrence and cancer-related mortality. While women treated for breast cancer report challenges with navigating their post-treatment body shape and weight, the effects of weight cycling on body image and mental health have not been elucidated. This study examined associations between weight changes and weight cycling on psychological health (i.e. weight-related guilt, shame and depressive symptoms) among women in the first-year post-treatment.

We studied the effects of multiple cycles of weight loss and regain on the defended body weight in rats. Thirty-six male Wistar rats were divided into three weight-matched groups: weight cyclers (n = 18), ad libitum-fed controls (n = 9), and maturity controls (n = 9). Cyclers underwent four rounds of 20% weight loss from 50% caloric restriction, each cycle followed by recovery to stable plateau weight on ad libitum feeding. Controls ate ad libitum. Maturity controls ate ad libitum and then weight cycled the final two rounds to evaluate the effect of age in later cycles. Cyclers' postdiet plate

Weight cycling is a major challenge in obesity management. Caloric restriction is known to promote this phenomenon, but the impact of macronutrient changes during dieting remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the role of macronutrient changes in weight maintenance without caloric restriction by alternating between two hypercaloric diets: a high-carbohydrate, high-fat Western diet (WD) and a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet (LCHDF). Obesity was induced in 8-week-old C57BL/6 male mice by 10 weeks of WD feeding. Then, the mice were subjected to 12 weeks of LCHFD interspersed with WD (I-WD
