Orbital Emphysema Occurring During Weight Lifting.

Although orbital emphysema is a recognized complication of orbital fractures involving any of the paranasal sinuses, it may develop without any fracture. A 23-year-old man presented with sudden left periorbital swelling during weight lifting in a fitness facility. On the left side, there was periorbital swelling with crepitus in palpation of subcutaneous tissue and conjunctival congestion. Computed tomography showed no fractures in the orbit. The patient was hospitalized. He was treated with empiric antibiotics and non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs. In three days, the swelling and crepitus

Recreational weight lifting and aortic dissection: case report.

Although there have been previous cases of ascending (type I) aortic dissection recognized in young weight lifters, this is the first reported instance of a descending (type III) dissection in such an individual. Successful treatment included aortic fenestration and an aortoiliac bypass. A new entity of aortic dissection in young weight lifters may be emerging.

Control and quantitation of voluntary weight-lifting performance of rats.

The present paper describes an exercise model that produces a voluntary hindlimb weight-lifting response. Each rat was operantly conditioned to enter a vertical tube, insert its head into a weighted ring (either 70 g or 700 g), lift the ring until its nose interrupted an infrared detector, and then lower the ring. Load cells measured the external force generated, and displacement transducers measured the vertical displacement of the ring during each lifting and lowering movement. The apparatus and training procedures were computer automated. Peak force, velocity, work, and power were calculate

Resistance (weight lifting) training in an adolescent with McArdle disease.

Owing to the risk of severe rhabdomyolysis, clinicians advise McArdle disease patients to refrain from strenuous exercise, particularly weight lifting. A 15-year-old male McArdle disease patient performed a 6-week, supervised, light- to moderate-intensity (~65-70% of one-repetition-maximum) resistance (weight lifting) training program (2 sessions/week). Training resulted in ~27% and ~6% increase in one-repetition-maximum bench press and multipower squat performance while inducing no myoglobinuria. The patient changed to a lower disease severity class, that is, he became virtually asymptomatic

Can a Novel Light Weight Minimal Support Lifting Exoskeleton Modify Lifting Movement in People without Low Back Pain?

Low back pain (LBP) is a major contributor to lifting-related disabilities. To minimize the risk of back pain, emerging technologies known as lifting exoskeletons were designed to optimize lifting movements. However, it is currently unknown whether a minimally supportive exoskeleton can alter the lifting movement in people without LBP. This study aims to investigate if wearing a novel lightweight exoskeleton that minimally supports the back, hip, and knee can alter the lifting range of motion and movement variations in people without LBP. This study also aims to investigate if wearing this nov

Subclavian artery rupture in a young man during excessive weight lifting.

We report a 19-year-old man with rupture of the right subclavian artery after an excessive exercise of weight lifting. Imaging showed a hematothorax and hematomediastinum, a pseudoaneurysm with a maximum diameter of 4 cm, and a dissection of the right vertebral artery. As an emergency procedure an interposition graft was performed for reconstruction of the right subclavian artery. The patient's postoperative course was uneventful, and he was symptom free except for regressive hoarseness due to a paresis of the right recurrent laryngeal nerve.

Sit-To-Stand Lift: Effects of Lifted Height on Weight Borne and Upper Extremity Strength Requirements.

To prevent back and shoulder injuries to nursing personnel, sit-to-stand lifts are used to transfer partial-weight-bearing patients with upper extremity strength. However, the weight-bearing capacity and upper extremity strength required of patients have not been defined. The objectives of this study were to determine: (a) the percentage of body weight borne by the patient when lifted to different heights in the lift and (b) whether a patient needs upper extremity strength. Nineteen healthy normal-weight volunteers (ages 19-39) were transferred from a hospital bed to a wheelchair using (a) a g

Coordination between the lumbar spine lordosis and trunk angle during weight lifting.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the coordination of the lumbo-sacral angle (lumbar spine lordosis) and the trunk inclination during lifting of different loads. STUDY DESIGN: Kinematic data of spine motion were analyzed. The parameters characterizing the relationships between the lordosis and the trunk inclination angle were estimated. BACKGROUND: The shape of the spine has been analyzed mostly for static or quasi-static conditions. The parameters relating the lumbar spine lordosis and trunk inclination in dynamics have not been analyzed. METHODS: Healthy subjects performed unconstrained weight lifts fro

Catastrophic cardiovascular consequences of weight lifting in a family with Marfan syndrome.

Marfan syndrome primarily involves the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and ocular systems. Isometric exercises such as weight lifting lead to significant stress along the aortic wall and predispose patients to dissection and rupture. A 30-year-old male patient presented with a complaint of back pain. He had a history of two operations for recurrent inguinal hernia. His father and elder brother died on separate occasions following loss of consciousness after weight lifting. He also had a brother who had undergone an emergency operation for De Bakey type I acute aortic dissection after presenta

Influence of breathing technique on arterial blood pressure during heavy weight lifting.

Arterial hypertension occurring during heavy resistance exercise may be a risk factor for stroke in healthy young adults. Any training method that ameliorates the pressor effect of exercise should reduce the risk of stroke. The objective of this study was to observe the influence of breathing technique on arterial blood pressure (BP) generated during heavy, dynamic weight lifting. BP was recorded in 10 male athletes by radial artery catheterization. Each subject then performed double-leg press sets at 85% and 100% of maximum. Each exercise was performed twice, once with closed glottis Valsalva

Control of Posture During Lifting: Effects of Weight Knowledge and Load Position Asymmetry.

Lifting objects challenges postural stability and requires the generation of anticipatory (APA) and compensatory postural adjustments. This study investigated the combined effects of perturbation predictability and asymmetric load placement on postural control during a bimanual lifting task. Sixteen healthy adults completed a randomized crossover study involving repeated lifts of a box containing a load equal to 5% of their body weight that was positioned asymmetrically under three conditions: known, unpredictable, and predictable. Surface electromyography from trunk and lower limb muscles and

Posterior shoulder dislocation while lifting weights: a missed diagnosis.

We present a case of a 24-year-old man who suffered acute shoulder pain and subsequent inability to move his arm while lifting weights in the bench-press position. He attended A&E where he was examined and X-rays were performed. He was diagnosed with presumed pectoralis major tendon rupture and was discharged to fracture clinic the following day with analgesia. On review in clinic he was found to have a posterior shoulder dislocation and was taken to theatre for relocation under anaesthesia. This case report examines the mechanism, investigations and management of posterior shoulder dislocatio

The influence of weight and starting height on lifting mechanics in lower extremity amputees.

This study compares the lifting mechanics of lower extremity amputees to controls and describes the influence of weight lifted and starting height on lifting style. Subjects included three individuals with transtibial amputation (TTA), two individuals with transfemoral amputation (TFA), and three able-bodied controls (CO). Amputee subjects performed six repetitions of six weights, randomly ordered, from two starting heights. TTA lifted from 30 cm and knee height, TFA from knee and thigh height, and controls from all three heights. Data were obtained from a work simulator, force plate, and a mo

Middle cerebral artery blood flow velocity in elite power athletes during maximal weight-lifting.

Cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) has been shown to significantly increase during dynamic exercise (running) secondary to increases in cardiac output. Static exercise (weight-lifting) induces supraphysiological arterial pressures up to 450/380 mmHg, and thus may alter CBFV. Catastrophic brain injuries such as stroke, cerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, retinal hemorrhage and retinal detachment have been associated with weight-lifting. A recent study has shown that intra-ocular pressure (IOP), which is an indirect measure of intracranial pressure, elevates to pathophysiologic levels

A National 20-year Analysis of Weight Lifting-related Injuries and Fractures Among Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Increasing strength through weightlifting has become a core component of competitive sports training, recreational exercise programs, and school physical education classes. Although many health benefits exist, there is concern for injury, especially with improper supervision and accelerated progression of training loads. Though organizations have advocated safe training practices, trends in the national health burden of injuries, specifically fractures, associated with weightlifting in the adolescent population have not been investigated. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Su

Atraumatic Splenic Rupture After Weight Lifting in a Patient Presenting With Left Shoulder Pain.

We discuss a 23-year-old active duty male who presented to the emergency department with left shoulder pain after deadlifting heavy weights the day prior. His physical examination revealed a nontender and otherwise unremarkable left shoulder with full range of motion and mild tenderness to palpation in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen. A bedside focused assessment with sonography for trauma (FAST) examination showed free fluid in the abdomen and a computed tomography scan showed a splenic laceration and splenomegaly. He later tested positive for infectious mononucleosis. This is the firs

Condition-Dependent Sex Differences in Lumbar sEMG and Prefrontal Hemodynamics During Known-Weight and Weight-Misprediction Lifting: A Pilot Study.

This pilot study examined sex-related neuromuscular and prefrontal hemodynamic responses across 3 and 9 kg known-weight and weight-misprediction lifting conditions and explored whether these patterns differed by physical activity level (PAL). Thirty adults completed the lifting tasks. Among the unknown-weight trials, only wrong-guess trials were retained, while the known-weight trials served as comparison conditions. The integrated linear mixed-effects model showed a significant Condition × Sex interaction, indicating that sex-related differences varied across lifting conditions. The omnibus c
