Osteonecrosis in pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus).

Bone lesions, particularly osteonecrosis, have been rarely described in cetaceans, with limited studies correlating imaging, gross and microscopic findings. Aseptic osteonecrosis is especially relevant as a chronic form of decompression sickness, well-documented in human divers but controversially reported in cetaceans. This study examined the humeral heads of five stranded short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) using computed tomography (CT) and plastic embedding histologic techniques. Three specimens exhibited CT-detectable lesions, while two did not. CT imaging revealed dist

Diving apart together: call propagation in diving long-finned pilot whales.

Group-living animals must communicate to stay in contact. In long-finned pilot whales, there is a trade-off between the benefits of foraging individually at depth and the formation of tight social groups at the surface. Using theoretical modelling and empirical data of tagged pairs within a group, we examined the potential of pilot whale social calls to reach dispersed group members during foraging periods. Both theoretical predictions and empirical data of tag pairs showed a potential for communication between diving and non-diving group members over separation distances up to 385 m (empirica

Vocal compensation to noise in long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas).

Anthropogenic noise is considered a marine pollutant by the European Union and can impact marine animals in various ways. Noise that overlaps in time and frequency with animal communication signals can interfere with communication and thus impact ecological functions mediated by acoustic signals, depending on how animals compensate for increasing noise. Our study investigated Lombard responses in long-finned pilot whales using sound and movement recording tags in an area with high anthropogenic pressure, the Strait of Gibraltar. We tested if pilot whales increase their vocal amplitude in respo

Organochlorines in stranded pilot whales (Globicephala melaena) from the coast of Massachusetts.

Pilot whales strand periodically along the U.S. coast, and these strandings offer an opportunity for the collection of tissues for biomonitoring of contaminant exposure in cetaceans, as well as for specimen archiving. Concentrations of organochlorine (OC) contaminants (e.g., PCB congeners, pesticides, DDTs) were measured in tissue samples from pilot whales that stranded in 1986 and 1990 along the Massachusetts coast. Adult and fetal samples of blubber, liver, brain, and kidney were collected, as well as ovaries from mature female whales. Many of the OCs found in maternal tissues were detected

Organochlorines and mercury in pilot whale blubber consumed by Faroe islanders.

Some 22,000 pilot whales (Globicephala melaena) were taken in the Faroe Islands between 1970 and 1992. It is known that tissues from these animals are widely consumed by the islanders. The position of these animals at the apex of a direct marine food chain renders them liable to accumulate toxic chemicals, such as metals and organochlorines. Although the consumption of contaminating metals in pilot whale tissues has been studied, the significance of blubber as a dietary source of organochlorine compounds has not been fully considered. This study reports levels of organochlorine and mercury con

Isolation of Brucella ceti from a Long-finned Pilot Whale (Globicephala melas) and a Sowerby's Beaked Whale (Mesoploden bidens).

Brucella ceti is an emerging zoonotic pathogen that has been recovered from several species of cetaceans in the world's oceans over the past 20 yr. We report the recovery of B. ceti from a Sowerby's beaked whale (Mesoploden bidens) and a long-finned pilot whale (Globicehala melas). Recovery from the testis of a long-finned pilot whale provides further evidence of potential for B. ceti infection to impact the reproductive success of cetaceans, many of which are threatened species. The addition of another two cetacean species to the growing number from which B. ceti has been recovered also furth

Mercury speciation in pilot whale from Faroe Islands, 1977-2015.

Mercury (Hg) is a naturally occurring heavy metal, but human activities and natural processes have led to increased pollution with Hg in the environment. Organic mercury, such as methyl mercury (MeHg), is considered more toxic than most inorganic mercury compounds. MeHg is rapidly taken up by aquatic organisms and bioaccumulates through the aquatic food web. The bioaccumulation causes high levels of MeHg in apex predators, such as pilot whales. Pilot whale meat is a traditional food source on the Faroe Islands; thus the consumption of pilot whale meat can lead to high Hg exposures in humans. T

Pulmonary carcinoma with metastasis in a long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas).

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed neoplasm in humans, however this does not apply to other animal species. Living in an aquatic environment the respiratory system of cetaceans had to undergo unique adaptations in order to them to survive and cope with totally different respiratory pathogens and potentially carcinogens from those affecting humans. CASE PRESENTATION: This article discusses not only macroscopical, histopathological and immunohistochemical features of a pulmonary carcinoma with disseminated metastases in a long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas), as well

Selenium and stable mercury isotopes provide new insights into mercury toxicokinetics in pilot whales.

High exposures of mammalian species to inorganic mercury (HgII) and methylmercury (MeHg) have been associated with adverse effects on behavior and reproduction. Different mammalian species exhibit varying responses to similar external exposure levels, reflecting potential differences in Hg toxicokinetics. Here, we use Hg stable isotopes, total Hg, MeHg and selenium (Se) concentrations measured in multiple tissues of North Atlantic pilot whales (Globicephala melas) to investigate processes affecting the distribution and accumulation of HgII and MeHg. We find that simple mixing of two distinct i

Isotope-based inferences of the trophic niche of short-finned pilot whales in the Webbnesia.

Knowledge of predator-prey interactions is key in ecological studies and understanding ecosystem function, yet this is still poorly explored in the deep-sea environment. Carbon (δ13C: 13C/12C) and nitrogen (δ15N: 15N/14N) stable isotope ratios of a deep-diving species, the short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus), were used to explore knowledge gaps on its ecological niche and foraging habitats in the Webbnesia marine ecoregion (Tenerife Island, n = 27 animals vs. Madeira, n = 31; 500 km apart) where animals display distinct levels of site fidelity. Specifically, we tested whether

High thresholds for avoidance of sonar by free-ranging long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas).

The potential effects of exposing marine mammals to military sonar is a current concern. Dose-response relationships are useful for predicting potential environmental impacts of specific operations. To reveal behavioral response thresholds of exposure to sonar, we conducted 18 exposure/control approaches to 6 long-finned pilot whales. Source level and proximity of sonar transmitting one of two frequency bands (1-2 kHz and 6-7 kHz) were increased during exposure sessions. The 2-dimensional movement tracks were analyzed using a changepoint method to identify the avoidance response thresholds whi

Complete amino acid sequence of myoglobin from the pilot whale, Globicephala melaena.

The complete amino acid sequence of the major component myoglobin from the pilot whale, Globicephala melaena, was determined by specific cleavage of the protein to obtain large peptides which are readily degraded by the automatic sequencer. The apomyoglobin was selectively cleaved at the two methionyl residues with cyanogen bromide and the acetimidated apomyoglobin was cleaved at the three arginyl residues by trypsin. From the sequence analysis of four of these peptides and the apoprotein, over 90% of the covalent structure of the protein was obtained. The remainder of the primary structure wa

Fatal Asphyxiation in Two Long-Finned Pilot Whales (Globicephala melas) Caused by Common Soles (Solea solea).

Long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas) are rare visitors to the southern North Sea, but recently two individual strandings occurred on the Dutch coast. Both animals shared the same, unusual cause of death: asphyxiation from a common sole (Solea solea) stuck in their nasal cavity. This is a rare cause of death in cetaceans. Whilst asphyxiation has been reported in smaller odontocetes, there are no recent records of this occurring in Globicephala species. Here we report the stranding, necropsy and diet study results as well as discuss the unusual nature of this phenomenon. Flatfish are no

Distribution of dopaminergic fibers and neurons in visual and auditory cortices of the harbor porpoise and pilot whale.

The distribution of putative dopaminergic fibers in two sensory cortical areas in the brain of the harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) and pilot whale (Globicephala melaena) was analyzed at the light and electron microscopic levels using tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunohistochemistry. The quantitative analysis of the distribution of labeled fibers demonstrates that the primary visual cortex located in the lateral gyrus and entolateral sulcus contains a denser dopaminergic innervation than the auditory cortex within the posterior portion of the presylvian gyrus. In both areas, TH-immunoreactive
