The white dot syndromes include a group of diseases which are characterized by multiple yellowish-white foci in the outer retina, retinal pigment epithelium, and choroid. For clinicians and researchers alike they present significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. White dot syndromes include primary inflammatory choriocapillaropathies, such as acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy (APMPPE)/acute multifocal ischemic choriocapillaropathy (AMIC), multiple evanescent white dot syndrome (MEWDS)/acute idiopathic blind spot enlargement (AIBSE), multifocal choroiditis (MFC),

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the fundus autofluorescence (FAF) findings in patients with white dot syndromes (WDSs).
METHODS: Patients with WDSs underwent ophthalmic examination, fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, and FAF imaging. Patients were categorized as having no, minimal, or predominant foveal hypoautofluorescence. The severity of visual impairment was then correlated with the degree of foveal hypoautofluorescence.
RESULTS: Fifty-five eyes of 28 patients with WDSs were evaluated. Visual acuities ranged from 20/12.5 to hand motions. Diagnoses included serpiginous choroidopathy

White dot syndromes comprise a heterogeneous group of inflammatory chorioretinal disorders historically hampered by overlapping clinical presentations and inconsistent nomenclature. Recent advances in multimodal imaging have fundamentally reshaped our understanding of these entities, enabling precise localization of tissue injury and revealing distinct pathogenic signatures across the disease spectrum. In this review, we discuss the different non-infectious posterior uveitides, formerly called "white dot syndromes", organized according to the primary anatomical locus of inflammatory injury: ph

White dot syndromes (WDS) represent a heterogeneous group of inflammatory diseases, primarily affecting the outer retina, choriocapillaris and choroid. Recent advances in the field of ocular imaging and development of new technologies, including optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A), have allowed a better characterization of the morphology of these conditions. This review will analyse the WDS from an imaging-based perspective, providing a better understanding of the pathophysiology underlying these disorders.

PURPOSE: The term white dot syndromes (WDS) has historically grouped multiple non-infectious posterior uveitis (NIPU) entities based on a similar funduscopic appearance of "white dots." Despite decades of use, the clinical relevance of this umbrella terminology has been questioned. This perspective critically examines whether WDS remains a valid conceptual and diagnostic construct in the era of advanced retinal and choroidal imaging.
DESIGN: Perspective review.
METHODS: Critical interpretation of the available literature on imaging and current pathophysiological evidence, combined with obser

PURPOSE: To measure the incidence of white dot syndromes (WDS) in a community-based population and to report clinical features and outcomes.
METHODS: Multicenter retrospective study using the Rochester Epidemiology Project medical records linkage system of Olmsted County, Minnesota. Databases were searched to identify all patients with WDS from January 1, 1988 through December 31, 2008.
RESULTS: Mean ophthalmic follow-up was 4.5 years and mean general medical follow-up was 9.1 years. The incidence of WDS was 0.45 per 100,000 per year (95% CI 0.19-0.71). Incidence rates for specific disease e

UNLABELLED: The indocyanine green angiographic appearance in the Multiple Evanescent White Dot Syndrome is described in a young female patient, presenting with bilateral involvement. Multiple hypofluorescent dots in the posterior pole of the right eye, and a hypofluorescent peripapillary ring in both eyes were the characteristic findings at initial examination. Six weeks later, there was only a small, dense, dark ring around both optic nerves.
CONCLUSION: The ICG angiography suggests a much more extensive choroidal involvement in MEWDS than is indicated by functional evaluation. The hypofluor

BACKGROUND: Multiple evanescent white dot syndrome is a benign, rare, acute, usually unilateral disease that primarily affects young women. Retinal findings can include white dots at the level of the retinal pigment epithelium, optic nerve head swelling, an enlarged blind spot, and paracentral and central scotomas. Visual loss can be significant early on, but almost always returns to normal. The cause is unknown.
CASE REPORT: A case of a 32-year-old woman with multiple evanescent white dot syndrome is presented and reviewed. The progression, symptoms, and differential diagnosis of multiple ev

INTRODUCTION: White dot syndromes are a heterogeneous group of diseases that affect different layers in the retina and choroid. Multimodal imaging is fundamental in the diagnosis, but also can be crucial in unveiling the pathogenesis of these entities.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Literature review.
RESULTS: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) provides depth-resolved, histological grade images of the vitreous, retina, and choroid. This technology is very useful to localize the primary nature and level of pathology of the various white dot syndromes. En face OCT can provide additional information reg

The white dot syndromes are a group of phenotypically similar disorders characterized by multiple lesions at the level of the outer retina, retinal pigment epithelium, and choroid. Common white dot syndromes whose imaging modalities have been described in this article are multiple evanescent white dot syndrome, acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy, acute zonal occult outer retinopathy, multifocal choroiditis and panuveitis, punctate inner choroidopathy, serpiginous choroiditis, and birdshot chorioretinopathy. The various imaging modalities help us to better understand the

Multiple evanescent white dot syndrome (MEWDS) is an inflammatory fundus disease primarily affecting the outer retina. It is characterized by transient yellow-white dots on the outer retina. Although the exact pathogenesis remains unclear, the progress in multimodal imaging (MMI) has enhanced our understanding of MEWDS. Most cases of MEWDS are idiopathic, lacking a definite cause, and can spontaneously recover; these are what we term classic MEWDS. Consequently, MEWDS is often referred to as the "common cold of the retina". Simultaneously, patients with other disorders may present with varying
