Mapping white matter integrity in elderly people with HIV.

People with HIV are living longer as combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) becomes more widely available. However, even when plasma viral load is reduced to untraceable levels, chronic HIV infection is associated with neurological deficits and brain atrophy beyond that of normal aging. HIV is often marked by cortical and subcortical atrophy, but the integrity of the brain's white matter (WM) pathways also progressively declines. Few studies focus on older cohorts where normal aging may be compounded with HIV infection to influence deficit patterns. In this relatively large diffusion tensor

White matter changes in elderly people: MR-pathologic correlations.

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging features of white matter lesions, often seen in the elderly, are correlated with histologic findings. Dilatation of perivascular spaces is seen, especially in the frontal and/or parietal subcortical white matter; the spaces are less than 3 mm in diameter and have sharp margins with no perifocal abnormality. Old lacunar infarcts are larger than 3 mm in diameter and are irregularly shaped and accompanied by perifocal myelin pallor and gliosis. Periventricular hyperintensity, including cap and rim, histologically shows myelin pallor, dilatation of perivascular spac

Hypodontia: an epidemiologic study of American black and white people.

INTRODUCTION: There are numerous epidemiologic studies of hypodontia, but most focus on white populations that, because of small teeth and slow development, might not represent the status of other peoples. The purpose of this study was to contrast the distributions of hypodontia in an adolescent sample of American blacks (n=600) with a comparable sample of whites (n=1100). METHODS: Panoramic radiographs of 1700 unrelated adolescents between 12 and 18 years were scrutinized for hypodontia. Those with syndromes and major genes contributing to congenital absence were omitted. RESULTS: The preva

Microstructural differences in visual white matter tracts in people with aniridia.

Aniridia is a panocular disorder characterized chiefly by iris hypoplasia. Most cases result from mutations of the PAX6 gene, which is important in both eye and brain development. In addition to ocular alterations, differences in global brain volume and functional connectivity have been reported in humans with aniridia. Understanding neural alterations in aniridia may require examination of possible differences in white matter structure, as few studies have assessed white matter in this population. The current study utilized diffusion-weighted imaging to assess white matter structure in 11 peo

Quantifying Brain White Matter Microstructure of People with Lateral Ankle Sprain.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to quantify differences in white matter microstructure and static postural control in individuals with and without a previous history of a lateral ankle sprain. METHODS: Ten participants with a history of a lateral ankle sprain and 10 controls performed three 20-s trials of single-leg static balance on a force platform under an eyes-open condition. Resultant sample entropy (SampEn) was used to assess static postural control performance. To assess white matter microstructure, fractional anisotropy (FA) of the superior cerebellar peduncles and corticospinal tracts was

Walking performance is worse in black than white people with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: There is emerging evidence for poor health outcomes among Black people with MS, and Black people with MS may have worse walking performance than White counterparts. PURPOSE: The current study examined if Black participants with MS had slower walking speed (timed 25-foot walk, T25FW) and shorter walking distance (six-minute walk, 6MW) than White participants, and if these differences were accounted for by demographic variables, physical activity, disease/clinical characteristics, and Social Determinants of Health (SDOH). METHOD: The analysis included samples of Black (N = 105) and

Greater Accumulation of Brain White Matter Hyperintensities in People Diagnosed and Treated During Acute HIV Compared With People Without HIV.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: People living with HIV (PWH) have increased rates of ischemic stroke even after antiretroviral therapy (ART) and viral suppression. Cerebral white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) on brain MRI are associated with an increased risk of stroke and cognitive impairment. This study sought to characterize and quantify brain WMHs during acute HIV infection and after early ART initiation compared with people without HIV. METHODS: Participants diagnosed with acute HIV infection (AHI) from the RV254/SEARCH010 cohort in Thailand and demographically matched people without HIV (PW

Differences in substance use treatment utilization among American Indian and Alaska native people compared to non-Hispanic White people - 2021.

BACKGROUND: American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) populations experience disproportionately high rates of substance use disorders (SUD), yet limited research has examined their engagement with and outcomes from specialty SUD treatment. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the 2021 Treatment Episode Dataset - Discharges (TEDS-D) to examine differences in clinical characteristics, treatment utilization, and outcomes between AIAN and non-Hispanic White adults (N = 423,990). Logistic and multinomial logistic regression models estimated unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios comparin

Changes in White Matter Microstructure Over 3 Years in People With and Without Stroke.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cerebral white matter health can be estimated by MRI-derived indices of microstructure. White matter dysfunction is increasingly recognized as a contributor to neurodegenerative disorders affecting cognition and to functional outcomes after stroke. Reduced indices of white matter microstructure have been demonstrated cross-sectionally in stroke survivors compared with stroke-free participants, but longitudinal changes in the structure of white matter after stroke remain largely unexplored. We aimed to characterize white matter micro- and macrostructure over 3 years a

A prospective study of cerebral white matter abnormalities in older people with gait dysfunction.

OBJECTIVES: The authors previously reported cross-sectional data suggesting a relationship between cerebral white matter hyperintensities (WMH) and gait and balance dysfunction in older people. There have been no longitudinal MRI studies to address this issue. The current study compared progression of WMH in subjects with gait and balance dysfunction with that in healthy subjects. METHODS: Two brain MRI were performed on 70 healthy, ambulatory subjects (mean baseline age 79, range 74 to 88) with no identifiable neurologic disease. The mean time between MRI was 4 years. Gait and balance were q

Occurrence of leukoplakia and some other oral white lesions among 20,333 adult Swedish people.

Among 20,333 people aged 15 yr or above, the prevalences of oral white lesions were calculated based on a partly new classification. The total prevalences were: cheek and lip biting 5.1%, smoker's palate 1.1%, frictional white lesion 5.5%, snuff dipper's lesion 8.0%, preleukoplakia 6.4% and leukoplakia 3.6%. If all these lesions were pooled, the prevalence was 24.8% and if only the entities cheek and lip biting and smoker's palate were excluded it became 20.1%. If weak "preleukoplakic" lesions were excluded from the latter figure the prevalence for marked whitish lesions was 13.8%. Etiologic a

The importance of need-altruism and kin-altruism to blood donor behaviour for black and white people.

BACKGROUND: Need-altruism (a preference to help people in need) and kin-altruism (a preference to help kin over non-kin) underlie two hypotheses for voluntary blood donation: (i) Need-altruism underlies motivations for volunteer blood donation and (ii) Black people express a stronger preference for kin-altruism, which is a potential barrier to donation. This paper tests these hypotheses and explores how need- and kin-altruism are associated with wider altruistic motivations, barriers, and strategies to encourage donation. METHODS: We assessed need- and kin-altruism, other mechanisms-of-altrui

White matter microstructure in relatives of people with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder: an ENIGMA meta-analysis.

Bipolar and psychotic disorders are highly heritable and associated with widespread white matter microstructure abnormalities. In this project, we compare white matter microstructure of unaffected first-degree relatives of individuals with bipolar disorder (FDR-BD) or psychotic disorder (FDR-SZ) to that of control participants. As secondary, exploratory aims, we examined the associations of childhood traumatic experiences and working memory with white matter microstructure across relatives and controls. Finally, we compared participants with BD or SZ to controls. We combined 11 samples from 9

Emotional health and its association with neurocognition in Hispanic and non-Hispanic White people with HIV.

OBJECTIVE: Emotional functioning is linked to HIV-associated neurocognitive impairment, yet research on this association among diverse people with HIV (PWH) is scant. We examined emotional health and its association with neurocognition in Hispanic and White PWH. METHODS: Participants included 107 Hispanic (41% primarily Spanish-speakers; 80% Mexican heritage/origin) and 216 White PWH (Overall age: M = 53.62, SD = 12.19; 86% male; 63% AIDS; 92% on antiretroviral therapy). Emotional health was assessed via the National Institute of Health Toolbox (NIHTB)-Emotion Battery, which yields T-scores f

Number and Diameter of White Pulp of Spleen in Different Age and Sex Groups of Bangladeshi People.

Spleen is a haemo-lymph organ and belongs to the reticuloendothelial system of human body, develops from mesodermal proliferation between the two leaves of dorsal mesogastrium. The microscopic structure of spleen is variable depending on the developmental stage of the organ, and the age and immune status of the individual. In our country, we depend on foreign data which came from the subjects of different races and from the individuals under different geographic conditions. So the study was carried out to minimize the dependency on foreign standards and to identify the diameter of white pulp i

Is black always the opposite of white? An investigation on the comprehension of antonyms in people with schizophrenia and in healthy participants.

The present investigation sought to expand our understanding of the cognitive processes underlying the recognition of antonyms and to evaluate whether these processes differed in patients with schizophrenia and in healthy controls. Antonymy is the most robust of the lexico-semantic relations and is relevant to both the mental organization of the lexicon and the organization of coherent discourse, as attested by the resurgence of interest in antonymy in the linguistic and psychological domains. In contrast, the vast literature on semantic processing in schizophrenia almost ignored antonymy. In

Depressive Symptoms Differentially Predict Neurocognition in Latinx and Non-Hispanic White People Living with HIV.

OBJECTIVES: Depression is common in people living with HIV (PLWH) and can contribute to neurocognitive dysfunction. Depressive symptoms in PLWH are often measured by assessing only cognitive/affective symptoms. Latinx adults, however, often express depressive symptoms in a somatic/functional manner, which is not typically captured in assessments of depression among PLWH. Given the disproportionate burden of HIV that Latinx adults face, examining whether variations in expressed depressive symptoms differentially predict neurocognitive outcomes between Latinx and non-Hispanic white PLWH is essen

Elevated Plasma Protein Carbonyl Concentration Is Associated with More Abnormal White Matter in People with HIV.

Structural brain abnormalities, including those in white matter (WM), remain common in people with HIV (PWH). Their pathogenesis is uncertain and may reflect multiple etiologies. Oxidative stress is associated with inflammation, HIV, and its comorbidities. The post-translational carbonylation of proteins results from oxidative stress, and circulating protein carbonyls may reflect this. In this cross-sectional analysis, we evaluated the associations between protein carbonyls and a panel of soluble biomarkers of neuronal injury and inflammation in plasma (N = 45) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF, n

"Racial mortality inversion": Black-white disparities in mortality among people experiencing homelessness in the United States.

Disparities in mortality between Black and White people have long been observed. These disparities persist at all income levels. However, similar patterns in racial mortality disparities are not observed among people experiencing homelessness. Instead, studies in a handful of cities show a reversal in the Black-White mortality disparity in the United States: Black people experiencing homelessness are less likely to die compared to White people experiencing homelessness. We propose a theory of "racial mortality inversion" and test whether inverted Black-White mortality patterns are observable i
