Environmental DNA as a tool for detecting illegal wildlife trade.

The illegal wildlife trade presents significant challenges to wildlife conservation due to its large impact on population and species persistence. Forensic technology plays an important role in detecting and prosecuting such trade but has lagged human forensics where trace genetic evidence is important in conviction or exoneration. At present, most genetic applications in wildlife forensics focus on identification of taxa or populations via tissue samples or visible trace material (e.g., blood, hair or feathers). However, enforcement officials may encounter common household objects that are su

Assessing the extent and nature of wildlife trade on the dark web.

Use of the internet as a trade platform has resulted in a shift in the illegal wildlife trade. Increased scrutiny of illegal wildlife trade has led to concerns that online trade of wildlife will move onto the dark web. To provide a baseline of illegal wildlife trade on the dark web, we downloaded and archived 9852 items (individual posts) from the dark web, then searched these based on a list of 121 keywords associated with illegal online wildlife trade, including 30 keywords associated with illegally traded elephant ivory on the surface web. Results were compared with items known to be illega

Assessing safeguards against the illegal wildlife trade on AI platforms.

AI platforms, while offering many positive applications, also present new risks to society, including the facilitation of trade in threatened and illegal wildlife. Although these platforms employ safeguards to block harmful or criminal requests, studies show such protections are imperfect and can be easily bypassed. To better understand these risks, we investigated the potential for AI platforms to enable wildlife trafficking, evaluated their safeguards, and tested how easily those safeguards might be circumvented. We applied a test set/case methodology based on three prompts across seven AI p

Risk of importing zoonotic diseases through wildlife trade, United States.

Population mobility is a main factor in globalization of public health threats and risks, specifically distribution of antimicrobial drug-resistant organisms. Drug resistance is a major risk in healthcare settings and is emerging as a problem in community-acquired infections. Traditional health policy approaches have focused on diseases of global public health significance such as tuberculosis, yellow fever, and cholera; however, new diseases and resistant organisms challenge existing approaches. Clinical implications and health policy challenges associated with movement of persons across barr

Illegal Wildlife Trade in Kathmandu Valley: A Hub of Biodiversity Crime.

The illegal wildlife trade (IWT) poses a major driver of global biodiversity loss and poses particular challenges in biodiversity-rich countries located along international trafficking routes. Nepal occupies a strategic position between two of the world's largest consumer markets for wildlife products, India and China, making Kathmandu Valley an important urban center for wildlife trafficking. Despite its strategic importance, long-term analyses of wildlife crime patterns in Kathmandu Valley remain limited. This study examines patterns and temporal trends in IWT and describes the demographic c

Bodies of knowledge: experience, commodification and labour in the imperial wildlife trade.

The production of zoological knowledge in the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth was closely tied to the supply of animal bodies to institutions like zoological gardens and university departments, sustained by a growing wildlife trade. This trade, however, used, developed and altered independent forms of knowledge that relied heavily on skills and competencies formed through experience and familiarization. These were 'embodied' in the sense that they were not only applied to the handling of these animals, but also shaped by the very animal bodies that were to be handled. Using the

Weak compliance with Nigeria's wildlife trade ban imposed to curb mpox spillovers.

Zoonotic diseases pose global public health threats, prompting various interventions to limit their emergence and spread. One increasingly common response by governments has been to ban wildlife hunting, trade and consumption. However, there is limited evidence of the effectiveness of wildlife trade bans. Here we assess compliance with Nigeria's wildlife trade ban-enacted to curb the spread of mpox (formerly monkeypox)-by analysing approximately 4.5 years of wild meat sales data from 19 vendors in southeast Nigeria (988 vendor-months) alongside interviews with vendors and law enforcement offic

The scale of Nigeria's involvement in the trans-national illegal pangolin trade: Temporal and spatial patterns and the effectiveness of wildlife trade regulations.

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) prohibits commercial trans-national trade in pangolin specimens. However, African pangolins are continually trafficked to Asia for traditional medicine, with Nigeria considered a key hub. Using reported Nigeria-linked pangolin seizure data and interviews with Nigerian law enforcement officials, we a) characterised Nigeria's involvement in global pangolin trafficking January 2010-September 2021, particularly observing trafficking trends after pangolin's CITES Appendix I listing; b) estimated the minimum

International wildlife trade quotas are characterized by high compliance and coverage but insufficient adaptive management.

Effective management of international wildlife trade is crucial to ensure sustainability. Quotas are a common trade management tool and specify an annual number of individuals to be exported, yet at present there is no global assessment of quota coverage and compliance. Using over 7,000 country-year specific reptile quotas established under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) covering 343 species, we quantify quota coverage, compliance, trade trends pre-quota and post-quota setting and whether quotas likely represent adaptive management.

Exploring the impacts of wildlife trade on zoonotic spillover and disease outbreaks: A multiple-perspective study.

The emergence of zoonotic pathogens from wildlife poses a major global health threat, contributing to frequent and impactful disease outbreaks. While wildlife trade is recognized as a key driver of zoonotic spillover, no studies have quantitatively assessed how trade volume relates to the occurrence and frequency of emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) at a global scale, especially regarding the impact of extreme volumes. This study addresses this gap by conducting a multiple-perspective analysis on country-level yearly zoonotic EID data from 1975 to 2013 using a Bayesian zero-inflated negative

Illegal Wildlife Trade and Emerging Infectious Diseases: Pervasive Impacts to Species, Ecosystems and Human Health.

Emerging infectious disease (EID) events can be traced to anthropogenic factors, including the movement of wildlife through legal and illegal trade. This paper focuses on the link between illegal wildlife trade (IWT) and infectious disease pathogens. A literature review through Web of Science and relevant conference proceedings from 1990 to 2020 resulted in documenting 82 papers and 240 identified pathogen cases. Over 60% of the findings referred to pathogens with known zoonotic potential and five cases directly referenced zoonotic spillover events. The diversity of pathogens by taxa included

Enterobacterial detection and Escherichia coli antimicrobial resistance in parrots seized from the illegal wildlife trade.

Enteric bacteria are considered important potential pathogens in avian clinical medicine, causing either primary or opportunistic infections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of enterobacteria in the intestinal microbiota of psittacine birds and to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of the Escherichia coli isolates cultured. Fecal samples were collected from 300 parrots captured from the illegal wildlife trade in Goiás, Brazil and were processed using conventional bacteriological procedures. A total of 508 isolates were obtained from 300 fecal samples: 172 E. coli (3

Detect and Trace: An Australian Field Trial Using Machine-Learning Tools to Combat Illegal Wildlife Trade.

The illegal wildlife trade is a global problem that continues to harm individuals, wildlife populations, ecosystems, and humans at an increasing rate. While efforts are underway globally to address the issue through a coordinated approach, the testing of new technologies in real-world settings remains limited. Here, we present the outcomes of an opportunistic Australian trial that tested two machine-learning tools during real-world seizures, including associated radiation-exposure safety data. During the seven-month trial, 116 animals were intercepted, representing reptiles and crustacea acros

From Forest Extraction to Digital Markets: Illegal Macaw Trade and Adaptive Monitoring for Forest Wildlife Resilience.

Illegal wildlife trade contributes to biodiversity loss, but trade in forest-dependent parrots is often examined through disconnected evidence streams, including field observations, declared trade records, seizures, online advertisements, and animal-welfare cases. Macaws provide a useful focal group because many species combine high market visibility with delayed maturity, long life spans, low reproductive output, and dependence on suitable nesting cavities. This structured narrative review synthesizes 80 sources, including peer-reviewed studies, CITES resources, official reports, policy docum

Welfare impacts of the illegal wildlife trade in a cohort of confiscated greater slow lorises, Nycticebus coucang.

Illegal harvesting and trade are major forces behind population declines of wild slow lorises (genus Nycticebus). The impacts of the wildlife trade on individual slow lorises have not been as well described. In this article, we describe quantitatively the consequences of the wildlife trade for 77 greater slow lorises, N. coucang, who were confiscated en masse and brought to Cikananga Wildlife Center in Indonesia. Medical records indicated that in total, 28.6% of the slow lorises died within the first 6 months, mostly due to traumatic injury, and all the infants died. The greatest sources of mo

LARGE-SCALE DISEASE-ASSOCIATED MORTALITY EVENT OF EASTERN BOX TURTLES (TERRAPENE CAROLINA CAROLINA) CONFISCATED DUE TO THE ILLEGAL WILDLIFE TRADE.

Eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina) are declining range-wide due to anthropogenic factors, including the illegal wildlife trade. Infectious diseases that cause high morbidity and mortality, such as frog virus 3 (family Iridoviridae, genus Ranavirus, species Rana1), may also threaten this species in managed-care and free-ranging settings. High rates of infectious disease transmission are documented within the illegal wildlife trade; however, the impact of diseases on health, survival, and ultimate disposition of confiscated turtles is not thoroughly described. In July 2021, 96 eas

No Evidence of Coronaviruses or Other Potentially Zoonotic Viruses in Sunda pangolins (Manis javanica) Entering the Wildlife Trade via Malaysia.

The legal and illegal trade in wildlife for food, medicine and other products is a globally significant threat to biodiversity that is also responsible for the emergence of pathogens that threaten human and livestock health and our global economy. Trade in wildlife likely played a role in the origin of COVID-19, and viruses closely related to SARS-CoV-2 have been identified in bats and pangolins, both traded widely. To investigate the possible role of pangolins as a source of potential zoonoses, we collected throat and rectal swabs from 334 Sunda pangolins (Manis javanica) confiscated in Penin

Cultural practices, wildlife trade dynamics, and climate-migration interactions: an integrated one health approach to reducing zoonotic spillover risks in Africa.

The drivers causing spillovers of zoonotic diseases in Africa are multifaceted and include cultural and traditional wildlife practices, illegal trade channels, environmental factors driven by climate change, and human migration. These drivers have been assessed separately in various reviews, and no synthesis has integrated all four within a unified multistage zoonotic spillover framework in Southern Africa, West, and Central Africa. This narrative review explores how cultural practices, the trading of wildlife, climatic changes, and forced human migration contribute to the zoonotic spillover r

Multiple etiological agents associated with the deaths of trafficked pangolins.

Pangolins represent the most heavily trafficked mammal globally and harbor diverse microorganisms, raising the concern that illegal trade increases their susceptibility to infectious diseases and facilitates the spread of zoonotic pathogens. In this study, internal organ and fecal samples were collected from 15 confiscated pangolins rescued at the Jinhua Wildlife Rescue Station in Zhejiang Province, China. Metatranscriptomic analysis combined with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) screening detected pestivirus, canine parvovirus 2 (CPV-2), human parainfluenza virus 2 (HPIV2), and Pseudomonas aer
