The Withania somnifera, also called Ashwagandha, is available everywhere in the world. We present a rare case of thyrotoxicosis following Ashwagandha administration, specifically painless thyroiditis (PT) in this report. The patient was a 47-year-old previously healthy Japanese man, who started taking Ashwagandha two months before his first visit to our hospital. He visited our hospital for typical thyrotoxicosis symptoms like a sense of fatigue, fever at night, and weight loss followed by diarrhea and headache. Blood tests disclosed thyrotoxicosis. Thyroid ultrasonography showed internal echo

In the present study, we report for the first time the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Withania frutescens (L.) Pauquy roots and leaves. Total phenolic content was determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu method and antioxidant activity was evaluated by the DPPH free radical scavenging and reducing power methods. Antimicrobial activity tests were carried out against ten bacterial species involved in nosocomial infections and two opportunistic clinical yeast isolates. The ethyl acetate and n-butanol leaf fractions exhibited the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity with IC50 = 4.53 +

The stimulatory effect of Withania somnifera on cytotoxic T lymphocytes was determined in Balb/C mice by the Winn's Neutralization assay using CTL sensitive EL4 thymoma cells as target cells. Withania somnifera showed a significant increase in CTL production both in vivo as well as in vitro. The survival time of E14 cells alone in treated animals was only 21 days and in the Withania extract treated group was 45 days with a percentage increase in life span (% ILS) of 114.28%. The survival rate of animals administered with EL4 cells (target) which were incubated with alloimmunized spleen cells (

Regeneration in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) is widely studied both for its relevance to human disease and to understand the robust regenerative response mounted by PNS neurons thereby possibly illuminating the failures of CNS regeneration(1). Sciatic nerve crush (axonotmesis) is one of the most common models of peripheral nerve injury in rodents(2). Crushing interrupts all axons but Schwann cell basal laminae are preserved so that regeneration is optimal(3,4). This allows the investigator to study precisely the ability of a growing axon to interact with both the Schwann cell and basal

Ashwagandha is a widely used herb in traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda. Despite its extensive tradition, growing concerns regarding its potential endocrinological effects have prompted scientific scrutiny. This review systematically evaluates the current preclinical, clinical, and case study evidence concerning AS's effects on hormonal systems, including the thyroid axis, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. AS appears to elevate thyroid hormones in hypothyroid contexts. Multiple studies consistently show AS-mediate

To manage male infertility caused by hormonal imbalance, infections and other predicaments, multifarious treatment strategies are emerging worldwide. Contemporary treatments, such as assisted reproductive techniques, are costly with low success rates of only 10-30%; however, herbal remedies are gaining more attention as an alternative or supplementary therapeutic modality for male infertility. The beneficial effects induced by oral intake of the roots of a small evergreen shrub, Withania sominifera (Ashwagandha) on semen quality of infertile men have previously been studied. Oral intake of Ash

Osteoporosis, characterized by reduction in bone density, is a significant source of mortality among the elderly, particularly in oestrogen-deficient women. We studied the effect of Withania somnifera (WS) root extract (ethanolic), which contains oestrogen-like withanolides for anti-osteoporotic activity. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were either sham operated (n = 12) or ovariectomized (n = 12) and treated with WS/vehicle (65 mg kg(-1)), orally for 16 weeks (n = 12). All rats were allowed free access to a calcium-deficient diet (0.04% Ca) and distilled water. At termination, urinary excretion of

Systemic lupus erythematosus commonly known as lupus is an intricate disorder with multiple organ involvement characterized primarily by inflammation caused due to deposition of immune-complexes formed by production of autoantibodies against nuclear, nucleolar as well as cytoplasmic self-antigens. Lack of availability of suitable treatments or treatments that are only symptomatic calls for investigation of possible modalities. Withania somnifera with its immunomodulatory properties is prescribed for arthritis in ayurveda. In the present study, the therapeutic effect of Withania somnifera pure
