Infectious diseases in the form of 'typhus' (74.2%) and 'fevers' (17.2%) were the commonest conditions accounting for entry to the Wakefield Workhouse Infirmary between 1826 and 1857, as recorded in the admissions book. Skin diseases were noted for 3.2% of admissions, principally scarlet fever (1.5%) and smallpox (0.8%). The mean age for primary dermatological admissions was 20 years (compared with 24 years for patients overall), with a mortality rate of 0.3%. The low number of smallpox cases may be the result of successful vaccination campaigns. The absence of admissions because of scabies (t

Dr Gray was an assistant medical officer at the Islington Workhouse when he was offered the dangerous but well-paid post as surgeon to the Amir of Afghanistan in August 1888. He arrived in Afghanistan in March 1889 and continued in the post until June 1893. He described his experiences in his book, My Residence at the Court of the Amir.

The Great Irish Famine of 1845-1852 is among the worst food crises in human history. While numerous aspects of this period have been studied by generations of scholars, relatively little attention has so far been given to the physiological impact it is likely to have had on the people who suffered and succumbed to it. This study examines the prevalence of enamel hypoplasia, Harris lines, and growth retardation in the nonadult proportion of a skeletal population comprising victims of the Famine who died in the workhouse in the city of Kilkenny between 1847 and 1851. The frequency of enamel hypo

As a reaction to widespread poverty, a system of coercive welfare developed in Switzerland during the 19th century. Poverty was often thought to result from an individual's misconduct rather than from structural, economic or political circumstances. People whose lifestyle deviated from the desired norm or who were unable to make a living for themselves were subjected to so-called administrative detention at institutions such as workhouses and poorhouses. The excavation of the cemetery of the correctional facility/workhouse and asylum «Realta» in Cazis offered the opportunity to gain insight in

This classic text by the German psychiatrist Karl Wilmanns stands out as exceptional in the literature describing the psychopathology of mentally ill homeless people. Wilmanns' psychopathological descriptions are excellent, as are his observations of the disheartening failure to recognize dementia praecox in courts, prisons and workhouses, and the significant consequences of this failure for the patients. As he vividly shows, most patients manifested a wide range of severe psychiatric symptoms and signs that should have caught the attention of the courts, prison doctors, and even persons with

Hepatitis B and C serological markers were evaluated in indigent patients living in a workhouse in Caracas, Venezuela. Three out of 146 specimens were reactive for HBsAg (2.1%) and 41 for anti-HBc (28%). Eight sera were reactive for antibodies against HCV, and 7 were confirmed by immunoblot assays (4.8%). Four out of these 7 HCV-positive sera were also HCV-RNA positive. The prevalence for viral hepatitis markers was significantly higher than that found in blood donor population in Caracas. The probable risk factors associated with this high prevalence of blood-borne viral hepatitis were: promi

The history of anatomical illustration is deeply entangled with unethical and, at times, illegal practices shaped by the politics of death and bodily autonomy. While anatomical images remain central to education, research, and patient communication, the individuals whose bodies were rendered into these illustrations have rarely been acknowledged. Historically, anatomists relied on bodies from executions, prisons, workhouses, and grave robbing. Legislation such as the Murder Act of 1752 and the Anatomy Act of 1832 disproportionately targeted marginalised populations, many of whom did not consen

The history of psychiatry is a history of therapeutic enthusiasm, with all of the triumph and tragedy, hubris and humility that such enthusiasm brings. During the 1800s and early 1900s, Ireland-s public asylums were routinely overcrowded, unhygienic and, quite commonly, fatal. The asylums became all-too-convenient options for a society with an apparently insatiable hunger for institutions, incarceration and control. The emergence of clinical professionals, both medical and nursing, was inevitably a factor in this complex mix, but the effects of any search for professional prestige were dwarfed

The anterolateral thigh flap has been the workhouse flap for coverage of soft-tissue defects in head and neck for decades. However, the reconstruction of multiple and complex soft-tissue defects in head and neck with multipaddled anterolateral thigh chimeric flaps is still a challenge for reconstructive surgeries. Here, a clinical series of 12 cases is reported in which multipaddled anterolateral thigh chimeric flaps were used for complex soft-tissue defects with several separately anatomic locations in head and neck. Of the 12 cases, 7 patients presented with trismus were diagnosed as advance

Food and diet were class markers in 19th-century Ireland, which became evident as nearly 1 million people, primarily the poor and destitute, died as a consequence of the notorious Great Famine of 1845 to 1852. Famine took hold after a blight (Phytophthora infestans) destroyed virtually the only means of subsistence-the potato crop-for a significant proportion of the population. This study seeks to elucidate the variability of diet in mid-19th-century Ireland through microparticle and proteomic analysis of human dental calculus samples (n = 42) from victims of the famine. The samples derive fro

The first regulations of the healthcare system in the domains and cities of the German Empire were the infection and plague regulations issued in many places from the sixteenth century onwards; however, as early as 1348 the Venetian state formed precise state structures to combat the black death that had broken out in Europe at the time. These were taken over analogously and in part in the Austrian states. Defense measures against the plague became particularly important on the k. k. (imperial-royal) military frontier against the Ottoman Empire. Under Empress Maria Theresa's enlightened absolu

BACKGROUND: Computed Tomography (CT) scanners are described as the workhouse of the radiology department. However, their geographical distribution, operationality, availability of skilled personnel and cost of the service may restrict their service to only a few people in some jurisdictions.
OBJECTIVE: This study audited CT scanners in Ghana to determine their geographical distribution, factors affecting their state and service accessibility to provide data for informed decision-making.
METHODS: A survey involving 45 CT centres was conducted between May and August 2021 using a 3-part semi-st
