Can democracy work for the poor?

Millions of the world's poorest people now live in middle-income democracies that, in theory, could use their resources to end extreme poverty. However, citizens in those countries have not succeeded in using the vote to ensure adequate progressive redistribution. Interventions aiming to provide the economically vulnerable with needed resources must go beyond assisting them directly, they must also improve democratic institutions so that vulnerable populations themselves can push their representatives to implement redistributive policies. Here, I review the literature on such interventions and

Treatment Preferences for Toothache among Working Poor Canadians.

INTRODUCTION: Working poor (WP) Canadians are those who work ≥ 20 hours/week, are not full-time students, and have annual family incomes <$34,300. They have unique vulnerabilities and face significant barriers to accessing dental care because they rarely receive employment-based dental benefits and are ineligible for publicly funded dental programs. This research aimed to understand whether WP Canadians would prefer extraction rather than tooth restoration and preservation when they have toothache. METHODS: A cross-sectional stratified sampling study design and telephone survey methodology wa

Poor working conditions and work stress among Canadian sex workers.

BACKGROUND: While sex work is often considered the world's oldest profession, there remains a dearth of research on work stress among sex workers (SWs) in occupational health epidemiological literature. A better understanding of the drivers of work stress among SWs is needed to inform sex work policy, workplace models and standards. AIMS: To examine the factors that influence work stress among SWs in Metro Vancouver. METHODS: Analyses drew from a longitudinal cohort of SWs, known as An Evaluation of Sex Workers' Health Access (AESHA) (2010-14). A modified standardized 'work stress' scale, mu

Equity in the usage of biologics for psoriasis in the working poor.

Biologic therapy often produces excellent outcomes for psoriasis; however, their high cost may create a barrier to appropriate usage, especially in the working poor population. This study defines working poor as income below 150% of the federal poverty level and holding or seeking work at least half a year. Our study aims to identify gaps in access to biologic therapy for psoriasis based on working poor status. This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted utilizing data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) from 2007 to 2018. Patients were stratified into working poor (57,

Anxiety and depression in healthcare workers are associated with work stress and poor work ability.

BACKGROUND: Symptoms of anxiety and depression are very common among healthcare workers (HCWs) and could impact the quality of care. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of these disorders in a public health company and their association with work ability and work-related stress. METHODS: A cross-sectional study involved 80 HCWs being treated for mental disorders (MD), 55 HCWs who said they suffered from MD but were not being treated, and 824 healthy colleagues. All workers completed the Work Ability Index (WAI), the Siegrist's Effort/Reward Imbalance questionnaire (ERI), t

Work factors as predictors of poor sleep in nurses' aides.

OBJECTIVES: The aim was to identify work factors that predict poor sleep in nurses' aides (assistant nurses). METHODS: The study was based on a randomly selected, nationwide sample of Norwegian nurses' aides. Of 5,513 nurses' aides, not on leave when they completed a mailed questionnaire in 1999, 4,771 (86.5 %) completed a second questionnaire 3 months later. A wide spectrum of work factors was assessed at baseline by questions from the General Nordic Questionnaire for Psychological and Social factors at Work. Subjective sleep quality during the previous 3 months was measured at baseline and

Low working memory capacity is only spuriously related to poor reading comprehension.

Accounts of comprehension failure, whether in the case of readers with poor skill or when syntactic complexity is high, have overwhelmingly implicated working memory capacity as the key causal factor. However, extant research suggests that this position is not well supported by evidence on the span of active memory during online sentence processing, nor is it well motivated by models that make explicit claims about the memory mechanisms that support language processing. The current study suggests that sensitivity to interference from similar items in memory may provide a better explanation of

Phonological working memory in German children with poor reading and spelling abilities.

Deficits in verbal short-term memory have been identified as one factor underlying reading and spelling disorders. However, the nature of this deficit is still unclear. It has been proposed that poor readers make less use of phonological coding, especially if the task can be solved through visual strategies. In the framework of Baddeley's phonological loop model, this study examined serial recall performance in German second-grade children with poor vs good reading and spelling abilities. Children were presented with four-item lists of common nouns for immediate serial recall. Word length and

When help is not wanted: Frustrated needs and poor after-work recovery as consequences of unwanted help at work.

Instrumental help and support in the workplace are mostly associated with outcomes that are considered desirable for organisations and their employees. In this study, we seek to shed light on a specific type of help at work that may entail negative consequences: being offered help that is not wanted by the recipient. Drawing on basic psychological needs theory and on theory of ruminative thoughts, we propose that offering unwanted help frustrates the recipient's psychological needs for autonomy and competence, which in turn affects after-work recovery processes in the form of increased ruminat

Poor performance on serial visual tasks in persons with reading disabilities: impaired working memory?

The present study investigates the performance of persons with reading disabilities (PRD) on a variety of sequential visual-comparison tasks that have different working-memory requirements. In addition, mediating relationships between the sequential comparison process and attention and memory skills were looked for. Our findings suggest that PRD perform worse than normally achieving readers (NAR) when the task requires more than a minimal amount of working memory, unrelated to presentation rate. We also demonstrate high correlations between performance on the task with the most working-memory

Impacts of children with troubles on working poor families: mixed-method and experimental evidence.

Mixed-method and experimental data on working poor families and children with troubles participating in the New Hope anti-poverty experimental initiative in Milwaukee are described. Sixty percent of these families had at least one child who had significant problems (learning, school achievement and/or behavior, home behavior, retardation, other disabilities). Control group families with children who had troubles had more difficulties in sustaining their family routine than did New Hope experimental families. In the context of the many other challenges these parents face, adaptation to children

Poor psychosocial work environment: a ticket to retirement? Variations by gender and education.

Many countries, including Norway, are implementing policies to delay retirement and encourage older workers to remain in the labour market. Improving psychosocial working conditions may motivate older workers to continue working. While research has linked psychosocial working characteristics to retirement intentions and work exit, there is a knowledge gap regarding gender and socioeconomic differences in these influences. This study investigates the impact of psychosocial working characteristics on employment exit among older workers, examining variations by gender and educational attainment.

Poor sleep and lower working memory in grade 1 children: cross-sectional, population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: Poor sleep and working memory difficulties are both associated with learning difficulties, but it is not known whether they are linked with each other in childhood. We aimed to determine, in a population-based sample of grade 1 children, whether poor sleep is associated with reduced working memory capacity. METHODS: Cross-sectional population-based study. All grade 1 children in 44 elementary schools in metropolitan Melbourne, Australia; 1749 children were included (participation rate 65%, mean age 6.9 years). Parents completed a written questionnaire at home, after which researche

Adverse psychosocial working conditions and poor quality of life among financial service employees in Brazil.

OBJECTIVES: Workers in the financial services sector are exposed to great stress at work. This study investigates whether exposure to adverse psychosocial work conditions is independently associated with poor health-related physical and mental quality of life among financial services workers. METHODS: We studied a nationwide representative sample of 2,054 workers of a large Brazilian state bank in 2008. Adverse psychosocial work conditions were investigated by the Effort-reward imbalance (ERI) scale and the Job content questionnaire (JCQ). Health-related quality of life (HRQL) was assessed us

Poor Work-Life Balance May Lead to Impaired Cognitive Function in Bus Drivers.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate how work-life balance (WLB) corresponds to cognitive functions and which mental health conditions play a mediating role in this association among Korean bus drivers. METHODS: The cognitive failures questionnaire (CFQ) was administered to 347 bus drivers in Seoul, Korea. The differences in the CFQ and WLB scores were examined by analysis of covariance, and a structural equation model (SEM) was constructed for investigating the mediating role of mental health indices between WLB and CFQ scores. RESULTS: Compared with the highest subjective work-life b

Working Memory for Signs with Poor Visual Resolution: fMRI Evidence of Reorganization of Auditory Cortex in Deaf Signers.

Stimulus degradation adds to working memory load during speech processing. We investigated whether this applies to sign processing and, if so, whether the mechanism implicates secondary auditory cortex. We conducted an fMRI experiment where 16 deaf early signers (DES) and 22 hearing non-signers performed a sign-based n-back task with three load levels and stimuli presented at high and low resolution. We found decreased behavioral performance with increasing load and decreasing visual resolution, but the neurobiological mechanisms involved differed between the two manipulations and did so for b
