The purpose of this study is to investigate emergency department (ED) workplace violence and assess staff perceptions of safety. Healthcare workers, in particular emergency care professionals, are often the recipients of workplace violence. The majority of staff (73%) reported that they felt safe most of the time or always, and 8% responded that they never or rarely felt physically safe in the ED. Most of the sites (94%) reported the presence and availability of in-hospital security 24 hr per day. In total, more than 3,461 attacks were reported by the respondents over 5 years, with a median of

Whether you work in the acute care, continuing care or outpatient setting, you cannot afford to ignore the effects of workplace violence. The costs are significant when you consider that they affect morale, productivity, service delivery, turnover and ultimately your financial success. Remember, a violent incident doesn't end when the incident is over. People must cope with the consequence of verbal or physical abuse and continual feelings of anger, guilt and fear. We must recognize workplace violence as a major occupational health and safety hazard. Most importantly, a program that reduces or

PURPOSE: To investigate the types and frequency of workplace violence experienced by radiologic technologists and to identify which technologists using specific imaging modalities are at increased risk.
METHODS: A mixed-methods approach was employed using a research electronic data capture (REDCap; Vanderbilt University) survey designed to establish information on radiologic technologists' self-reported experiences with workplace violence. The survey was distributed to a random sample of 10 000 radiologic technologists working with various imaging disciplines. Participants (N = 193) were aske

METHODS: This was a descriptive, quantitative study of 55 nursing professionals in the emergency unit of a public hospital. Data were collected between April and June 2018 throu

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence occurs on a frequent basis in nursing. Most violent acts remain unreported. Consequently, we do not know the actual frequency of the occurrence of workplace violence. This requires research of nurses' actions following workplace violence and identification of reasons why most victims do not report violent acts in the appropriate manner.
AIM: To explore violence in nursing as experienced by nurses in Slovenia.
METHODS: A survey was carried out with a representative sample of nurses in Slovenia. The questionnaire Workplace Violence in Nursing was submitted to 375

METHODS: Using the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) framework, an interprofessional team implemented a comprehensive WPV prevention program. Strategies included staff education, standardized reporting, use of the Brøset Violence

OBJECTIVES: Using a variety of sources, the author explores the complex reasons for aggression and violence in workplace settings, as well as suggesting means of prevention and intervention.
METHODS: Literature Review.
RESULTS: Studies indicate workplace violence affects more than half of U.S. organizations, yet nearly 70 percent have no programs or policies to deal with this problem. Research indicates that aggressive behavior of a psychological nature often precedes physical violence in the workforce, yet employers regularly ignore warning signs even when reported by employees. Older adults may suddenly exhibit behaviors that are viewed as noncompliant, noncooperative, and threatening. They may even lash out verbally and physically causing injury to health care staff. In addition to taking actions that prevent harm to the staff and the patient, determining what caused this behavior (dementia vs delirium or other cases) will be critical, as well as debriefing the staff after the incident.

Workplace violence is a significant problem in healthcare. It was believed that in the context of patient violence nurses faced a moral dilemma regarding conflicting duties to self and patients. A qualitative study was conducted with nurses who experienced physical violence perpetrated by a patient. The aim was to examine the ethical decision-making process nurses used to determine the "right" course of action. Nurses did not perceive the conflict between these two duties as the primary dilemma they faced. They appreciated their patients' vulnerability and the power differential inherent in th

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence (WPV) is an emerging problem for health workers (HWs) and a global concern in health systems. Scientific literatures infer that WPV against HWs is often attributed to workplace injuries and absenteeism, leading to a series of adverse consequences. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of workplace injuries and absenteeism due to WPV among Bangladeshi HWs and its association with factors related to health facilities, work environments, and rotating shift work.
METHODS: This study used participants who had experienced WPV, including medical doc

OBJECTIVES: To clarify the concept of workplace violence in nursing and propose an operational definition of the concept.
METHODS: The review method used was Walker and Avant's eight-step method.
RESULTS: Identification of the key attributes, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents of the concept resulted in an operational definition of the concept. The proposed operational definition identifies workplace violence experienced by nurses as any act or threat of verbal or physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or other threatening disruptive behavior that occurs at the worksite
