Cytotoxic Compounds from Aerial Organs of Xanthium strumarium.

Xanthium strumarium L., the main species of the genus Xanthium, is ubiquitously distributed. The aim of this study was to determine the cytotoxic effect of aerial organs of X strumarium, grown in Cuba, against cancer cell lines and the isolation of compounds potentially responsible for this activity. Initially, an ethanol partitioning procedure yielded the XSE extract that was subsequently fractionated with chloroform resulting in a XSCF fraction. Both, XSE and XSCF fractions exhibited cytotoxic effects on MDA MB-23 1, MCF7, A549 and CT26 cell lines by using the MTT assay. Above all, the XSCF

Cocklebur toxicosis in cattle associated with the consumption of mature Xanthium strumarium.

Cockleburs (Xanthium spp.) are herbaceous annuals with worldwide distribution. Toxicoses are usually associated with the consumption of the seedlings in the cotyledon stage, which contain a high concentration of the toxic principle, carboxyatractyloside. The seeds are also known to contain the toxin, but it has long been assumed that the spiny capsule would deter their consumption. Six of 70 yearling calves died while being fed round bale hay composed predominantly of foxtail and mature cocklebur plants with burs. Clinical signs ranged from acute death to hyperexcitability, blindness, tense mu

Intoxication by Xanthium cavanillesii in cattle and sheep in southern Brazil.

Three outbreaks of Xanthium cavanillesii intoxication occurred in the spring in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. All outbreaks were observed in paddocks with sandy soils in flood plains along water streams. The paddocks had been under water, and after water withdrawal cattle were introduced to those areas which had seedlings of X cavanillesii and shortage of other forage. Mortality varied between 3 and 58%. Most animals were found dead or died a few hours after observation of clinical signs. The main lesion was a swollen liver with acute diffuse centrilobular necrosis. The dise

Intoxication of dairy cows in Uruguay by ingestion of cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium) seeds in sorghum silage.

The ingestion of cotyledons or seeds of cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium) causes poisoning as a result of acute liver failure. Here we describe a spontaneous outbreak of X. strumarium toxicity in dairy cows in Uruguay. The outbreak occurred in the winter when the cows were fed sorghum silage contaminated with X. strumarium seeds. Clinical signs of depression, anorexia, paddling, opisthotonos, muscle tremors, sternal recumbency, and death were observed 2-12 h following ingestion. Of 160 Holstein cows, 30 (19%) animals were ill, and 6 (4%) died. At autopsy, the liver had a diffuse mottled appearan
