An efficient in vitro propagation protocol of cocoyam [Xanthosoma sagittifolium (L) Schott].

Sprouted corm sections of "South Dade" white cocoyam were potted and maintained in a greenhouse for 8 weeks. Shoot tips of 3-5 mm comprising the apical meristem with 4-6 leaf primordial, and approximately 0.5 mm of corm tissue at the base. These explants were treated to be used into the culture medium. A modified Gamborg's B5 mineral salts supplemented with 0.05 μM 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) were used throughout the study. Thidiazuron (TDZ) solution containing 0.01% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was used. Erlenmeyer flasks and test tubes were used for growing cultures. The effect of different

Pharmacological activities of Xanthosoma sagittifolium (L.) Schott and Corchorus olitorius L. extracts in uterine leiomyoma: evidence from in vitro and in vivo approaches.

INTRODUCTION: Uterine fibroids (leiomyomas) are benign uterine tumors common in reproductive years. Metabolic syndrome-marked by obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and dyslipidemia-has been associated with increased fibroid risk. Two Nigerian plants, Xanthosoma sagittifolium (cocoyam) and Corchorus olitorius (jute mallow), are traditionally used to support women's reproductive health, though their antifibrotic potential remains underexplored. This study investigated their protective properties against fibroid development using in vitro and in vivo models. METHODS: Fresh corms of X. sa

White plague among the "forgotten people" from the Barbaricum of the Carpathian Basin-Cases with tuberculosis from the Sarmatian-period (3rd-4th centuries CE) archaeological site of Hódmezővásárhely-Kenyere-ér, Bereczki-tanya (Hungary).

Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection that is well-known in the palaeopathological record because it can affect the skeleton and consequently leaves readily identifiable macroscopic alterations. Palaeopathological case studies provide invaluable information about the spatio-temporal distribution of TB in the past. This is true for those archaeological periods and geographical regions from when and where no or very few TB cases have been published until now-as in the Sarmatian period (1st-5th centuries CE) in the Barbaricum of the Carpathian Basin. The aim of our paper is to discuss five n

In vitro availability of some essential minerals in commonly eaten processed and unprocessed Caribbean tuber crops.

The levels of three essential minerals Ca, Fe and Mg and the extent of their availability were assessed in four commonly eaten Caribbean tuber crops [dasheen (Xanthosoma spp.), Irish potato (Solanum tuberosum), sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) and yellow yam (Dioscorea cayenensis)] in their processed and unprocessed states. Calcium was highest in cooked dasheen (5150+/-50 mg/kg) while Magnesium was highest in uncooked Irish potato (3600+/-200 mg/kg). There was no significant loss of calcium from the food samples upon cooking. All the uncooked food samples displayed higher levels minerals assesse

The glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) of five commonly consumed foods of the South Pacific.

Glycemic index (GI) has been widely used in the management of blood sugar levels among diabetes however; in the South Pacific very little information regarding the GI of local foods is made available. The objectives of this research were to determine the glycemic index and the glycemic load of 5 South Pacific foods, which have not been studied. The foods tested were plantain (Musa AAB), tannia (Xanthosoma sagittifolium), roti or chappati, homemade pancake and Lees cabin crackers. Glucose powder mixed in 200 mL of water was used as reference food. Eight apparently healthy indigenous Fijian male

In vitro antimalarial activity of extracts of some plants from a biological reserve in Costa Rica.

Treatment with the usual antimalarial drugs, have induced parasite resistance, reinforcing the need to finding natural antimalarial components that would be found on plants from the forest. Therefore, we decided to look for these components in Costa Rican plants from a protected forest area. Fresh and dry extracts of roots, bark, leaves, flowers and fruits of 25 plants from a biological reserve in Costa Rica, Reserva Biol6gica Alberto Manuel Brenes (REBAMB), were studied in vitro for the presence of substances with antimalarial activity. By studying the inhibition of P berghei schizogony, we a

Ant Interactions with Aroid Infructescences (Araceae) Used as Temporary Nesting Sites, Cohabiting with a Complex Endophagous Insect Community in a Neotropical Rainforest.

Ants are abundant and diverse in the tropics, nesting in different forest layers and utilizing a wide range of nesting sites, from specialized to opportunistic. To describe the floral interactions of endophagous insects in the Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve (Mexico), samples of Araceae infructescences were collected during an annual cycle at different altitudes. Ten species of Araceae belonging to the genera Dieffenbachia (1), Philodendron (5), Syngonium (3) and Xanthosoma (1) were investigated. A total of 334 infructescences were sampled, of which only 5.1% were found to be infested by ants. H

Elimination of phenols, ammonia and cyanide in wash water from biomass gasification, and nitrogen recycling using planted trickling filters.

Trickling filters were used to treat wash water from a wood gasifier. This wash water contained toxic substances such as ammonium, cyanide, phenols, and PAH. The goal was to develop a system that degraded toxic substances, and achieved full nitrification of ammonia. A 1 kW model wood gasifier plant delivered wash water for the experiments, which was standardised to a conductivity of 3 mS/cm by dilution. Toxicity was assessed by bacterial luminescence detection, germination test with cress (Lepidium sativum), and pot plants cultivated in a hydroponic setup irrigated continuously with the wastew
