Xerostomia and salivary gland hypofunction impact oral health and quality of life and are mainly caused by the intake of medications, chronic disorders like Sjögren's syndrome, and head and neck radiation. Other aetiologies may be local diseases of the salivary glands including infections, cancer, or obstructive diseases of the salivary ducts. Management strategies are primarily alleviating symptoms. Current investigations show promising results in stem cell treatment. In this review, we want to provide comprehension of the aetiologies, evaluation, and management of xerostomia and hyposalivati

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the Summated Xerostomia Inventory (SXI-ID) questionnaire in detecting xerostomia and salivary gland hypofunction (SGH).
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This diagnostic study first underwent a validity and reliability test. Participants were randomly sampled from the Geriatric Clinics of Dr. Hasan Sadikin Hospital, Bandung, Indonesia. The SXI-ID was generated through a forward-backward translation, after which its validity (item-total item correlations), internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha), and test-retest reliability (kappa statis

OBJECTIVE: To cross-culturally adapt and validate the Thai version of the Xerostomia Inventory (XI) and Summated Xerostomia Inventory (SXI) for subjective evaluation of oral dryness in Thai middle-aged and older adults.
METHODS: The original English versions of the XI and SXI were cross-culturally translated into Thai. Content validity was examined by the expert panel and 30 pilot subjects. The XI/SXI-Thai were then administered to 200 Thai adults (aged 50 years or older) for further assessment of psychometric properties. The standard question, the Bother Index, and the Xerostomia Questionnai

OBJECTIVE: Xerostomia is a subjective feeling of dry mouth and is commonly observed in patients with autoimmune diseases. Our study examines the association between xerostomia and diet.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cross-sectional study includes 1405 adults from 15 Lithuanian geographical areas (52% response rate). A self-reported questionnaire inquired about xerostomia, sex, age, education, residence, and consumption of selected 23 diet items. For the multivariable analysis, 23 diet items were categorized into eight major diet groups. The data were analyzed by bivariate and multivariable analy

Xerostomia, or dry mouth, is a common complaint that may be caused by several conditions, which include side effects of a wide variety of drugs, such as antidepressants, therapeutic radiation to the head and neck, dehydration, diabetes, and diseases involving salivary glands, such as Sjögren's syndrome. The complaint of dry mouth may or may not be associated with decreased salivary gland function. Individuals with xerostomia complain of problems with eating, speaking, swallowing, and wearing dentures. Some people also complain of salivary gland enlargement or changes in taste. Lack of saliva m

Xerostomia, the subjective feeling of dry mouth caused by a severe reduction in the flow of saliva, is a common problem that is particularly prevalent among the aged. It has become increasingly evident that dry mouth is associated with a number of serious systemic conditions and diseases. Among these are the intake of commonly prescribed medications, autoimmune diseases, and irradiation to the head and neck. The diminution in the flow of saliva may profoundly affect oral health, disturb digestion and speech, and seriously impair the patient's quality of life. Food avoidance, nonabsorption of s

Our goal was to establish the practical usefulness of combinations of tests (saliva flow rate, SFR; salivary lysozyme, Lys; salivary lactoferrin, Lf; sialography, SG; salivary gland scintigraphy, SGS; and labial salivary gland biopsy, SGB) for the oral component of Sjögren's syndrome (SS). These tests were applied to 40 patients with primary SS (group A, defined by the presence of keratoconjunctivitis sicca, a positive response to two of three selected questions for xerostomia and the presence of two of four autoantibodies), 16 patients with secondary SS (group B), 16 patients with connective

Xerostomia, the subjective feeling of dry mouth, affects millions of people particularly the elderly. It is invariably associated with hypofunction of the salivary glands. The amount, rate of secretion, and composition of saliva are regulated by both sympathetic and parasympathetic receptor systems whose stimulation transmits signals through intracellular messengers (cations, nucleotides, phospholipid derivatives) to structures and enzymes within the cell. Salivary glands express a variety of cell-surface receptors including adrenergic (alpha and beta), muscarinic-cholinergic, substance P, vas

Xerostomia, the subjective feeling of a dry mouth associated with dysfunction of the salivary glands, is mainly caused by radiation and chemotherapy, various systemic and autoimmune diseases, and drugs. As saliva plays numerous essential roles in oral and systemic health, xerostomia significantly reduces quality of life, but its prevalence is increasing. Salivation mainly depends on parasympathetic and sympathetic nerves, and the salivary glands responsible for this secretion move fluid unidirectionally through structural features such as the polarity of acinar cells. Saliva secretion is initi

Hereditary gelsolin amyloidosis (AGel amyloidosis) is a rare, dominantly inherited systemic disease with worldwide distribution, caused by c.654G > A or c.654G > T gelsolin gene mutation. The disease mainly manifests with late-onset dystrophy of the cornea, laxity of the skin and dysfunction of the cranial nerves whereas the oral manifestations have remained less-studied. To examine if AGel amyloidosis also affects salivary gland function, we studied 27 patients. In a questionnaire, 89% of them reported oral dryness, and 74% oral and ocular dryness. Unstimulated (UWS) and stimulated whole sali

Salivary hypofunction caused by salivary gland disease, medication, or radiation may predispose for secondary oral mucosal disease. In these patients the protective coating of saliva is reduced or absent, leaving the oral mucosa more vulnerable. Candidiasis, burning mouth syndrome, and white lesions of oral mucosa are increased in frequency. The aim of management is to prevent oral pathological changes. The management procedure may include proper oral hygiene, saliva-stimulating agents, or saliva substitutes, depending on the severity of the salivary dysfunction. Treatment includes antifungal

Xerostomia or dry mouth is a condition that is frequently encountered in dental practice. The most common cause is the use of certain systemic medications, which make the elderly at greater risk because they are usually more medicated. Other causes include high doses of radiation and certain diseases such as Sjogren's syndrome. Xerostomia is associated with difficulties in chewing, swallowing, tasting or speaking. This results in poor diet, malnutrition and decreased social interaction. Xerostomia can cause oral discomfort, especially for denture wearers. Patients are at increased risk of deve

The aim of the study was to investigate the features of xerostomia in patients with advanced cancer. The protocol involved completion of the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale, and measurement of the unstimulated whole salivary flow rate (UWSFR) and the stimulated whole salivary flow rate (SWSFR). One hundred twenty patients participated in the study. Xerostomia was the fourth most common symptom (78% of patients). It was associated with a poor performance status (P = 0.01). The usual cause of xerostomia was drug treatment. There was an association with the total number of drugs prescribed (P =

Scrub typhus is an acute febrile disease caused by the intracellular organism Orientia tsutsugamushi. The main pathogenesis is focal or disseminated multi-organ vasculitis caused by the infection of endothelial cells and the perivascular infiltration of leukocytes. Many studies have reported interstitial pneumonia, cholecystitis, pancreatitis, and meningoencephalitis in scrub typhus. However, there is no report about sialoadenitis in a patient with scrub typhus. A 79-year-old man was admitted to the emergency room due to a high fever, headache, and myalgia. Scrub typhus was confirmed based on

PURPOSE: To compare patient-reported xerostomia during daytime and during nighttime with objectively measured parotid and submandibular gland function in a cohort of head-and-neck cancer (HNC) patients treated with RT.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cohort of 138 HNC patients underwent objective measurements of parotid (PF) and submandibular (SMF) gland function and completed a xerostomia questionnaire (XQ) before RT, at 6 weeks, 6 months and 1 year after RT. No attempt was made to spare the submandibular gland(s). The XQ contained specific questions concerning the sensation of dry mouth during day

BACKGROUND: A reduction in salivary and lachrymal secretion has been described in many pathologies; however, such alterations have not been described in patients with renal failure. This study was designed to estimate the frequency of alterations in salivary and lachrymal secretion in haemodialysed patients. PATIENTS ABD METHODS: We studied 63 haemodialysed patients and 23 healthy control subjects. In all of them we tested salivary secretion (Saxon test), lachrymal secretion (Shirmer test) as well as the presence of symptoms of xerostomia and xerophthalmia. In a subgroup of patients We investi
