Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis.

Yersinia enterocolitica can cause enteritis, right lower-quadrant pain mimicking appendicitis, reactive arthritis, and erythema nodosum. This organism is transmitted through food, animal contact, and contaminated blood products. Patients with iron excess are at a higher risk for serious infection. This article describes the history, microbiology, virulence factors, epidemiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and therapy of Y. enterocolitica and Y. pseudotuberculosis. In addition, the immune response of those developing reactive arthritis following infection with Y. enterocolitica is disc

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis in an alpaca.

A 6-year-old female huacaya alpaca was referred to the clinic for evaluation with a 1-month history of rapid weight loss, inappetence, lethargy, and severe leukocytosis refractory to medical management. Physical examination revealed a body condition score of 1 out of 5 and a large, firm structure palpable in the right caudoventral abdomen. Abdominal ultrasonographic examination revealed 3 masses with hyperechoic, swirling centers. The largest mass measured 15 cm in diameter with a 2-centimeter capsule, and extended from right of midline into the left inguinal region. Transrectal ultrasonograph

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis-Associated Myositis.

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis (Y. pstb.) is a Gram-negative pathogen associated with gastrointestinal infections, such as enterocolitis. While complications like reactive arthritis can occur, progression to myositis is extremely rare. This report describes a five-year-old boy who developed myositis following a Y. pstb. infection. The patient presented with a five-day history of abdominal pain, fever, and leg pain that progressed to muscle weakness, which affected his ability to walk. Laboratory results showed elevated inflammatory markers, and stool cultures confirmed Y. pstb. infection. Magneti

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and arthritis.

In 1986 and 1987 nine patients with a raised antibody titre to Yersinia pseudotuberculosis were found. Two of these results were almost certainly due to the cross reactivity between some Y pseudotuberculosis serogroups and some salmonella serotypes. Of the other seven patients with otherwise unexplained Y pseudotuberculosis serology, three suffered from severe arthritis and two had symptoms suggestive of sacroiliitis. Our data and published reports suggest that reactive arthritis might follow both Y enterocolitica and Y pseudotuberculosis infections.

Postdiarrheal arthropathy of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis.

Two patients with acute gastroenteritis in whom polyarthritis subsequently developed were found to have positive serologic results for Yersinia pseudotuberculosis. With resolution of the arthropathy the antibody titres decreased. While the patient without the histocompatibility antigen HLA-B27 had an acute, self-limited arthritis, the patient with this antigen had a more chronic arthritis. Serologic typing and stool culture for Y. pseudotuberculosis should be done in cases of postdysenteric arthritis.

Lipopolysaccharide of the Yersinia pseudotuberculosis Complex.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), localized in the outer leaflet of the outer membrane, serves as the major surface component of the Gram-negative bacterial cell envelope responsible for the activation of the host's innate immune system. Variations of the LPS structure utilized by Gram-negative bacteria promote survival by providing resistance to components of the innate immune system and preventing recognition by TLR4. This review summarizes studies of the biosynthesis of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis complex LPSs, and the roles of their structural components in molecular mechanisms of yersiniae pathog

Yersinia pestis versus Yersinia pseudotuberculosis: effects on host macrophages.

Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague, is proved to be a recently emerged clone from Y. pseudotuberculosis. However, the diseases they cause and their patterns of transmission are very different. People always focus on the genetic changes between Y. pestis and Y. pseudotuberculosis to reveal their pathogenic differences, and little is known about host defence differences to these two Yersinia. In this study, the effects of Y. pestis and Y. pseudotuberculosis on macrophages were analysed. Cell apoptosis showed significant difference after the macrophages were infected by these two stra

[Pseudotuberculosis caused by Yersinia pseudotuberculosis in a pet rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus)].

A 5-year-old dwarf rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) with a body weight of 2.46 kg was presented due to acute inappetence, apathy, and diarrhea. The animal was housed outdoors with a companion rabbit in an enclosure with natural soil and an underground tunnel system. The general clinical examination revealed severe apathy, hypothermia (36.3°C), and increased abdominal respiration. Laboratory diagnostics showed a non-regenerative anemia as well as heterophilic and monocytic leukocytosis. Radiographic examination demonstrated hepatomegaly and loss of peritoneal detail. In addition to an enlargement

Yersinia pestis and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection: a regulatory RNA perspective.

Yersinia pestis, responsible for causing fulminant plague, has evolved clonally from the enteric pathogen, Y. pseudotuberculosis, which in contrast, causes a relatively benign enteric illness. An ~97% nucleotide identity over 75% of their shared protein coding genes is maintained between these two pathogens, leaving much conjecture regarding the molecular determinants responsible for producing these vastly different disease etiologies, host preferences and transmission routes. One idea is that coordinated production of distinct factors required for host adaptation and virulence in response to

Evidence for superantigen production by Yersinia pseudotuberculosis.

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis is an enteric pathogen that induces a variety of clinical symptoms, fever, scarlatiniform rash, diarrhea, vomiting, and arthritis. Characteristic histopathologic findings in Y. pseudotuberculosis infection such as lymphoid hyperplasia, typically seen in mesenteric lymph nodes, suggest that the stimulation of a large proportion of T lymphocytes may be involved in the pathogenesis of this infection. In this study, we assessed the mitogenic activity of culture supernatants of the clinical isolates of Y. pseudotuberculosis and investigated the mechanism by which these c

[Pathogenetic significance of the psychrophilia of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis].

The work presents the data indicating that the temperature of Y. pseudotuberculosis cultivation is very important in regulating the activity of pathogenicity factors, necessary for the initiation of the pathogenic process in the cells of the macroorganism. Low temperature (8-10 degrees C), necessary for the growth of Y. pseudotuberculosis, facilitates the activation of invasive and toxic pathogenicity factors. At a growth temperature of 37 degrees C the inhibition of such necessary attributes of virulence as adhesion and invasion into epithelial cells occurs in Y. pseudotuberculosis, which dec

Pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis caused by Yersinia pseudotuberculosis.

Septic vertebral osteomyelitis caused by Yersinia pseudotuberculosis is extremely rare. We report the first case of pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis due to Y. pseudotuberculosis. A 65-year-old man presented with low back pain and fever. He had a history of psoriasis vulgaris treated with adalimumab. The patient reported drinking adequate amounts of well water daily. Clinical examination revealed no neurological deficit of the lower limbs. Laboratory findings included increased inflammatory reactions. Magnetic resonance imaging showed diffuse changes in intensity at the T10 and L3 vertebrae, an

A hybridoma panel producing monoclonal antibodies to immunochemically non-identical antigenic epitopes of the protein nature located in outer membrane of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis was obtained. It was revealed that the previously identified B-antigen protecting laboratory animals from experimental plague was detected using both monoclonal antibodies against mentioned protein determinants and the determinants of lipopolysaccharide O-side chains. The B-antigen is a component of the Y. pseudotuberculosis outer membrane, egested in the form of the vesicles (OMVs) by bacteria cultivated in fluid
