Rethinking Youth Sports.

When we consider the health and welfare of our children, few issues are of more concern than the risk and consequences of head trauma in sports. From participation in male-dominated football and hockey to girls soccer and softball, repeated impacts to the head that do not produce recognized concussion is the cutting edge of sports head injury research. Our author, a leading researcher in this field, provides the latest on what we know and don't know on this relatively new frontier of neuroscience.

Overuse injuries in youth sports.

Although youth sports participation is beneficial on many levels, it is also associated with an increased risk of injury. Risk factors for injury in children and adolescents include the presence of growth cartilage, existence of muscle imbalance, and pressure to compete despite pain and fatigue. Overuse injuries, such as patellofemoral pain, Osgood-Schlatter disease, calcaneal apophysitis, Little League elbow, Little League shoulder, spondylolysis, and osteochondritis dissecans, are common injuries in organized sports. However, proper education, supervision, and training can help reduce the ri

Lower extremity injuries in youth sports.

The lower extremity is the most commonly injured anatomic area in sports. An appropriate history and physical examination is sufficient to diagnose most injuries. By knowing the position where a joint has the greatest and least bony stability, one can predict the likelihood of bony and ligament injury. Such information is helpful in determining which structures are most susceptible to injury as well as identifying when radiographs or other diagnostic studies are indicated. An accurate diagnosis is crucial for planning effective therapy and in determining the need for surgical referral. An unde

Concussion Epidemiology in Youth Sports: Sports Study of a Statewide High School Sports Program.

BACKGROUND: Current research on concussion incidence in youth athletes (age <18 years) is small and limited by variability in injury reporting and diagnostic methodology. HYPOTHESIS: Concussion injuries commonly occur in high school sports programs. The likelihood of concussion among student-athletes (aged 13-18 years) depends on the sport they are participating in as well as the sex of the athlete. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 4. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all Hawaii high school athletes aged 13 to 18 years participating in 14 sports fro

Playing Sports, Placing Sports Bets? Sports Club Membership, Gambling Norms and Sports Gambling Behavior among Flemish Youth.

In recent years, gambling has become increasingly embedded in sports culture, a phenomenon known as "gamblification", raising concerns about youth exposure to sports betting. This study explores the role of descriptive norms (perceived peer gambling behavior) and injunctive norms (perceived peer approval) within Flemish sports clubs, assessing their impact on youths' (18-25 year old) online sports betting frequency. Using a quantitative cross-sectional survey (N = 1,290), results indicated that sports club membership is significantly positively correlated with online sports betting frequency,

Ulnar variance in youth sport.

INTRODUCTION: Ulnar variance is a radiographic measurement that describes the relative heights of the distal ulna and radius. Youth athletes who repetitively load their wrist can develop stress injury at the distal radial physis, which may alter longitudinal growth resulting in positive ulnar variance (PUV). This dynamic bony relationship may predilect athletes for wrist pain and/or ulnar-sided pathology; however, the prevalence and clinical significance of ulnar variance in youth athletes is not completely understood. SOURCES OF DATA: PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, and SPORTDiscus were queried in N

Current Addiction in Youth: Online Sports Betting.

Background: Gambling landscape has changed in recent years with the emergence of online gambling (OG). Greater accessibility and availability of this betting modality can increase the risk of developing a gambling disorder (GD). Online sports betting (OSB) is currently the most common type of OG, but little is known about the clinical characteristics of OSB compared to slot-machine (SM) gamblers, the most common offline gambling disorder. Methods: This was a prospective study conducted between October 2005 and September 2019, and included outpatients diagnosed with GD seen in a Pathological Ga

Review of Media Representation of Sport Concussion and Implications for Youth Sports.

Participation in sport can incur a risk of sport-related concussion (SRC). Media representation of SRC is frequently at odds with up-to-date scientific data. Our findings confirm a significant amount of false, confusing, or misleading terminology used in reporting on the topic, which is concerning as media is as a major source of SRC information. Individuals have a variable base of knowledge pertaining to this injury, and accurate understanding of SRC does not always correlate to appropriate action. Inaccurate portrayal of SRC media may contribute to the confusion surrounding it. Popular media

[Kitesurfing injuries. A trendy youth sport ].

The aim of this review article is to give an overview of current knowledge on kitesurfing injuries. As part of a prospective study, the overall self-reported injury rate was 7.0 per 1000 h of practice. One fatal accident and 11 severe injuries occurred. The most commonly injured sites were foot and ankle, head, chest, and knee. Contusions, abrasions, and lacerations were amongst the most frequent injuries. None of the athletes suffering a head injury used a helmet; the board had been flung against the head by the elastic board leech in all cases. The most common injury situation was the jump.

The Relative Age Effect on Youth Sports Injuries.

INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE: The relative age effect (RAE) has been described as the consequence of differences in ages between individuals within the same age group. In youth sports, relatively older children may have a physical and developmental advantage over younger children. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between relative age and sports injury in a cohort of pediatric athletes. METHODS: A probability sample (n = 1997) of children between 5 and 17 yr of age with sports injuries were extracted from a regional hospital database. Relative age was defined as a child's bi

Approaching community priorities in youth sports injury prevention research.

BACKGROUND: Research in youth sports is often complex. As interest in youth sports injury prevention grows, scientists should consider community priorities beyond a specific research study. MAIN TEXT: This commentary discusses the authors' personal experiences researching concussion prevention in middle school sports, as the overarching community faced multiple challenges. These challenges included a series of weather-related emergencies that resulted in a shift in the community's priorities, multi-day school closures, and cancellations of sports activities and meetings. We discuss the import
