Use of Zea mays L. in phytoremediation of trichloroethylene.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a chlorinated aliphatic organic compound often detected as pollutant in soils and ground water. "Green technologies" based on phytoremediation were proven to be effective to reclaim organic pollutants (e.g. TCE) and heavy metals from different environmental matrices. In this work, we use Zea mays L. for the removal of high TCE concentrations from medium cultures. In particular, we investigated a sealed bioreactor where the growth medium was contaminated with an increasing amount of TCE, in the range 55-280 mg/L; the removal capability of the maize plants was assessed

Kosakonia pseudosacchari sp. nov., an endophyte of Zea mays.

A beige pigmented bacterial strain (JM-387(T)), isolated from field-grown corn root tissue, Tallassee, Alabama, was studied for its taxonomic allocation. A comparison of the 16S rRNA gene sequence with those of the type strains of most closely related species of the family Enterobacteriaceae showed highest sequence similarities to the type strain of Kosakonia sacchari (99.5%), "Enterobacter oryzendophyticus" (98.8%), and Kosakonia radicincitans (98.6%). Construction of phylogenetic trees based on the 16S rRNA gene and partial sequences of four protein-coding genes, rpoB, gyrB, infB, and atpD (

A multi-omics approach to maize (Zea mays) tassel development.

The development of the male inflorescence in maize (Zea mays) is a complex and highly regulated process that is essential for reproductive success and yield. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the regulatory programs involved in tassel formation, including the initial specification of anther cell types, the transcriptomes, small RNAs (sRNAs), and proteomes were profiled at four developmental stages (0.5-2.0 cm). The RNA-seq analysis indicates dynamic shifts in gene expression underlying the transition from indeterminate meristems to organ initiation and germinal cell determination by 2.0

Chelant-assisted phytoextraction and accumulation of Zn by Zea mays.

Zea mays plants were exposed to soils with concentrations of Zn ranging from 64 to 1800 mg kg(-1) dw, and the efficiency of three selected chelating agents (trisodium citrate (CI), disodium oxalate (OX) and disodium dihydrogen ethylene-diamine-tetraacetate (EDTA)) in enhancing metal phytoextraction was compared. Zn concentration in plant tissues increased in conjunction with the metal concentration of the soil. EDTA was found to be the most efficient chelating amendment, increasing concentrations of Zn in shoots from 88 mg kg(-1) dw, at 64 mg kg(-1) dw soil, to 8026 mg kg(-1) dw at 1800 mg kg(

Hydrogen sulphide improves adaptation of Zea mays seedlings to iron deficiency.

Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is emerging as a potential molecule involved in physiological regulation in plants. However, whether H2S regulates iron-shortage responses in plants is largely unknown. Here, the role of H2S in modulating iron availability in maize (Zea mays L. cv Canner) seedlings grown in iron-deficient culture solution is reported. The main results are as follows: Firstly, NaHS, a donor of H2S, completely prevented leaf interveinal chlorosis in maize seedlings grown in iron-deficient culture solution. Secondly, electron micrographs of mesophyll cells from iron-deficient maize seedlin

Hormetic effect(s) of tetracyclines as environmental contaminant on Zea mays.

Animal wastes from intensive pig farming as fertilizers may expose crops to antimicrobials. Zea mays cultivations were carried out on a virgin field, subjected to dressing with pig slurries contaminated at 15 mg L(-1) of Oxy- and 5 mg L(-1) of Chlor-tetracycline, and at 8 mg L(-1) of Oxy and 3 mg L(-1) of Chlor, respectively. Pot cultivation was performed outdoor (Oxy in the range 62.5-1000 ng g(-1) dry soil) and plants harvested after 45 days. Tetracyclines analyses on soils and on field plants (roots, stalks, and leaves) did not determine the appreciable presence of tetracyclines. Residues w

Reduced Cd accumulation in Zea mays: a protective role for phytosiderophores?

Cadmium is a nonessential trace metal and a frequent soil contaminant. Because plants vary in their accumulation of Cd, an understanding of the specific processes that control uptake could reveal methods for reducing Cd levels in edible plant tissues and conversely increasing Cd accumulation in plants used for phytoremediation. Phytosiderophores are iron chelators excreted by graminaceous plants under conditions of iron limitation, but they also complex other metals including cadmium. Here we examine the influence of Cd exposure on phytosiderophore production by hydroponically grown maize. Cd

Ecotoxicological Effect of Kappaphycus alvarezii Extract on Zea mays and Ceriodaphnia silvestrii.

Marine algae are recognized as promising sources of natural biostimulants in agriculture, with potential applications in seed physiological conditioning. However, the environmental implications of their production, management, and disposal remain insufficiently addressed. This study evaluated the ecotoxicological effects of a commercial Kappaphycus alvarezii extract on Zea mays and Ceriodaphnia silvestrii. Conditioning assays with maize seeds were performed at extract concentrations of 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%, assessing germination, vigor, and early seedling growth. Acute toxicity tests with C

Zea mays Volatiles that Influence Oviposition and Feeding Behaviors of Spodoptera frugiperda.

Fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) is a major global pest of many crops, including maize (Zea mays). This insect is known to use host plant-derived volatile organic compounds to locate suitable hosts during both its adult and larval stages, yet the function of individual compounds remains mostly enigmatic. In this study, we use a combination of volatile profiling, electrophysiological assays, pair-wise choice behavioral assays, and chemical supplementation treatments to identify and assess specific compounds from maize that influence S. frugiperda host location. Our findings reveal that met

Soluble Sugar and Starch Extraction and Quantification from Maize (Zea mays) Leaves.

An easy-to-perform protocol for isolating and quantifying soluble sugars (sucrose, glucose, and fructose) and starch from maize (Zea mays) leaf tissue is described. The method has been optimized to extract non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) from frozen, finely ground tissue in a methanol:chloroform:water solution. Three rounds of tissue extraction for 30 min each at 50°C provide quantitative recovery of soluble sugars. The use of alternative extraction solvents is discussed, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of these solvents. Additionally, we provide two support protocols. The first

Impact of GenX on Zea mays: Alterations in Morphology and Physiological Performance.

Hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA or GenX) is a highly mobile perfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) increasingly detected in the environment, yet its impact on major crops remains poorly understood. For this reason, hydroponically grown Zea mays was exposed to 10, 100, and 1000 μg L-1 of GenX for 7 days to couple bioaccumulation and physiological performance. This compound accumulated in both roots and leaves, reaching 4.5 μg g-1 DW at 1000 μg L-1, thereby demonstrating its toxic potential. Low doses stimulated lateral root proliferation and root surface area, whereas the highest GenX le

Iron bioavailability of maize (Zea mays L.) after removing the germ fraction.

Maize is a staple food for many communities with high levels of iron deficiency anemia. Enhancing the iron concentrations and iron bioavailability of maize with traditional breeding practices, especially after cooking and processing, could help alleviate iron deficiency in many of these regions. Previous studies on a small number of maize genotypes and maize flour products indicated that degermination (germ fraction removed with processing) could improve the iron bioavailability of maize. This study expanded upon this research by evaluating the iron bioavailability, mineral concentrations, and

Uptake, distribution, and velocity of organically complexed plutonium in corn (Zea mays).

Lysimeter experiments and associated simulations suggested that Pu moved into and through plants that invaded field lysimeters during an 11-year study at the Savannah River Site. However, probable plant uptake and transport mechanisms were not well defined, so more detailed study is needed. Therefore, experiments were performed to examine movement, distribution, and velocity of soluble, complexed Pu in corn. Corn was grown and exposed to Pu using a "long root" system in which the primary root extended through a soil pot and into a hydroponic container. To maintain solubility, Pu was complexed

Rare genetic variation at Zea mays crtRB1 increases beta-carotene in maize grain.

Breeding to increase beta-carotene levels in cereal grains, termed provitamin A biofortification, is an economical approach to address dietary vitamin A deficiency in the developing world. Experimental evidence from association and linkage populations in maize (Zea mays L.) demonstrate that the gene encoding beta-carotene hydroxylase 1 (crtRB1) underlies a principal quantitative trait locus associated with beta-carotene concentration and conversion in maize kernels. crtRB1 alleles associated with reduced transcript expression correlate with higher beta-carotene concentrations. Genetic variatio

Bioresource Potential and Safety Evaluations of Thai Zea mays L. Husk Waste Extracts.

Corn husk, a prevalent agricultural byproduct, remains an underutilized source of bioactive compounds. This study investigated the influence of extraction solvents (water, 50% ethanol, and 95% ethanol) and techniques (maceration, reflux, ultrasound-assisted extraction) on the phytochemical profiles and biological activities of corn husk. The results revealed that water extraction produced the highest total phenolic content, whereas 95% ethanol extraction yielded the greatest total flavonoid content and the most potent antioxidant activity in DPPH testing. In contrast, ultrasound-assisted water

Anticancer activity of Zea mays leaf extracts on oxidative stress-induced Hep2 cells.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in humans. It is believed that plants can provide potential bioactive compounds for the development of "new leads" to combat cancer and other diseases. The present study focuses on the ability of the different extracts (aqueous, methanol, and chloroform) of the leaves of Zea mays in influencing the process of apoptosis induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in Hep2 (laryngeal carcinoma) cells. Various apoptosis-related parameters, such as cell viability, morphological changes, nuclear changes, and apoptotic index were characterized. sulforhodamine B an

Effects of fertilizer application to sweet corn (Zea mays.) grown on sandy soil.

In our experiment we tried to find out what kind of eventual changes in the environment and in plant chemical composition occurred in response to different fertilizer treatments applied to sweet corn (Zea mays convar. saccharata) grown on sandy soil with low humus content. The ploughed layer contained <1% CaCO3 and around 1% humus. The soil was very well supplied with P, well supplied with K, Mg, Mn and Cu, and weakly supplied with N and Ca. The treatments were planned in accordance with the recommendations, with a planned unhusked ear yield of 16 tons per hectare, of the new environmental fri

Cadmium accumulation and its effects on metal uptake in maize (Zea mays L.).

The effects of different concentrations of Cd on growth of maize (Zea mays L.) and metal uptake were investigated. Cd accumulations in roots and shoots and the interactions among other metals (Mn, Fe, Cu and Zn) were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The concentrations of cadmium chloride (CdCl(2).2.5H2O) used ranged from 10(-4) M to 10(-6) M. Cd had stimulatory effects during the first 5 days on root length of Nongda No. 108 at 10(-6) M and 10(-5) M Cd concentrations. Seedlings exposed to 10(-4) M Cd solution exhibited substantial growth reducti
