Chemically Induced Resistance to Pathogen Infection in Arabidopsis by Cytokinin (Trans-Zeatin) and an Aromatic Cytokinin Arabinoside.

This study compares the ability of the cytokinin (CK) trans-zeatin (tZ) and the CK sugar conjugate 6-(3-methoxybenzylamino)purine-9-arabinoside (BAPA) to induce resistance against the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae in Arabidopsis thaliana. Treatment with either tZ or BAPA significantly reduced bacterial growth after a later infection. This chemically induced resistance (IR) required the CK receptor AHK3, highlighting its critical role in mediating resistance by tZ and BAPA. This is remarkable as these compounds show either high or no affinity for this CK receptor, respectively. Surpri

Trans-zeatin suppresses osteoclastogenesis and prevents estrogen deficiency-induced bone loss by modulating Nrf2-mediated redox homeostasis and AKT signaling.

Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) is a metabolic bone disorder driven by excessive osteoclast (OC) activity, but current therapies are limited by adverse effects. Trans-zeatin (TZ), a naturally occurring plant cytokinin with antioxidant properties, has not been investigated in bone metabolism. Here, we show that TZ suppresses receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption in vitro and attenuates ovariectomy-induced trabecular bone loss in mice. Mechanistically, TZ activates nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-mediated antio

Exogenous ABA combined with cytokinin enhances drought resistance in Ziziphus jujuba Mill. var. spinosa by regulating xylem development and zeatin signaling pathway.

Drought is a decisive abiotic constraint limiting the growth and yield of jujube, its alleviation is orchestrated by a complex hormonal network that governs the tree's drought-resistance responses. Based on preliminary evidence that abscisic acid (ABA) and cytokinin play coordinated roles in drought adaptation, this study aimed to clarify their individual and combined effects on regulating drought resistance in sour jujube. Phenotypic responses, anatomical alterations, endogenous hormone profiles, and the expression levels of genes involved in the zeatin biosynthesis pathway after exogenous ho

Different Dynamics: Meta-Topolin Induces Faster and More Pronounced Upregulation of Selected Shoot Development-Related Genes in Arabidopsis thaliana Compared to Trans-Zeatin and Thidiazuron.

Cytokinins (CKs) are a class of phytohormones that regulate a wide range of developmental processes in plants. Different structural forms of these phytohormones have been widely used in plant tissue culture, although comparative studies on their temporal effects on gene expression remain limited. In this study, we compared the effects of trans-zeatin (tZ), meta-topolin (mT), and thidiazuron (TDZ) on the expression dynamics of ten CK-responsive genes associated with shoot growth and development in Arabidopsis thaliana. Ten-day-old Arabidopsis seedlings were exposed to liquid nutrient media cont

Influence of cadmium and selenate on the interactions between hormones and phospholipids.

In this study, the influence of plant hormones, negatively charged indolilo-3-acetic acid (IAA) and positively charged zeatin, on lipid membranes was studied. As models of negatively and positively charged biological membranes, monolayers of 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-[phospho-l-serine] (DMPS) and 1,2-dipalmitoyl-3-trimethylammonium-propane (DPTAP) at the water/air interface were used, respectively. Additionally, the effect of cadmium and selenium ions on the interactions between hormones and lipids was studied. Surface pressure and surface potential measurements, Brewster angle microscopy (

Plant hormone cytokinins control cell cycle progression and plastid replication in apicomplexan parasites.

Cytokinins are plant hormones that are involved in regulation of cell proliferation, cell cycle progression, and cell and plastid development. Here, we show that the apicomplexan parasites Toxoplasma gondii and Plasmodium berghei, an opportunistic human pathogen and a rodent malaria agent, respectively, produce cytokinins via a biosynthetic pathway similar to that in plants. Cytokinins regulate the growth and cell cycle progression of T. gondii by mediating expression of the cyclin gene TgCYC4. A natural form of cytokinin, trans-zeatin (t-zeatin), upregulated expression of this cyclin, while a

Diet and microbiome shape small-molecule cytokinin pools in mammals.

Cytokinins (CKs) are adenine-derived metabolites traditionally characterized as plant hormones, yet their origin, distribution, and functions in mammalian systems remain largely undefined. Using integrated metabolomics, microbiome, and metagenomics approaches, we provide a systematic characterization of CK occurrence and potential sources in mammals. Serum profiling across five animal species revealed consistent detection of multiple CK derivatives, with concentrations markedly lower than in plant tissue. The CK storage form, zeatin-O-glucoside, predominated in mammalian sera, followed by tran

Comparison of Extraction Methods for the Quantification of Phytohormones From Tomato Fruits and Leaves by LC-MS/MS.

Purification of crude plant extracts by solid-phase extraction (SPE) is assumed to reduce matrix effect in phytohormone quantification by LC-MS/MS, but its efficacy is rarely assessed. We used postextraction spiking of isotope-labeled phytohormones to estimate matrix effect, recovery, and processes efficiency in extracts prepared according to protocols that implement SPE with tC18 and HLB sorbents, respectively, and according to a protocol that does not include SPE. Across six structurally diverse phytohormone classes and tomato fruit and leaf matrices, we did not find significant matrix effec

Dynamic transcriptomic and metabolomic responses to seed germination in Luffa cylindrica.

Seed dormancy is a critical agronomic trait that affects uniform germination and seedling establishment in Luffa cylindrica. In this study, we performed phenotypic, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analyses on two contrasting Luffa cylindrica materials: Z-184 and Z-114. Phenotypic evaluation revealed that compared with Z-114 seeds, Z-184 seeds exhibited significantly lower germination potentials and germination rates. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that the DEGs were predominantly associated with plant hormone signal transduction, MAPK signaling, and metabolic pathways. Metabolomic profiling

Cytokinin Plant Hormones Have Neuroprotective Activity in In Vitro Models of Parkinson's Disease.

Cytokinins are adenine-based phytohormones that regulate key processes in plants, such as cell division and differentiation, root and shoot growth, apical dominance, branching, and seed germination. In preliminary studies, they have also shown protective activities against human neurodegenerative diseases. To extend knowledge of the protection (protective activity) they offer, we investigated activities of natural cytokinins against salsolinol (SAL)-induced toxicity (a Parkinson's disease model) and glutamate (Glu)-induced death of neuron-like dopaminergic SH-SY5Y cells. We found that kinetin-

The stability and biological activity of cytokinin metabolites in soybean callus tissue.

The activity, uptake and metabolism of cytokinin metabolites was determined in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) callus tissue. The following activity sequence was established: zeatin riboside (ZR)>zeatin (Z)>O-glucosides of Z, ZR and their dihydro derivatives>lupinic acid (an alanine conjugate of Z)>7- and 9-glucosides of Z which were almost inactive. The 7- and 9-glucosides and lupinic acid were taken up very slowly by the callus tissue and showed great metabolic stability, but some degradation to 7-glucosyladenine, 9-glucosyladenine and the 9-alanine conjugate of adenine occurred. Growth-promoting Sphingomonas paucimobilis ZJSH1 associated with Dendrobium officinale through phytohormone production and nitrogen fixation.

Growth-promoting Sphingomonas paucimobilis ZJSH1, associated with Dendrobium officinale, a traditional Chinese medicinal plant, was characterized. At 90 days post-inoculation, strain ZJSH1 significantly promoted the growth of D. officinale seedlings, with increases of stems by 8.6% and fresh weight by 7.5%. Interestingly, the polysaccharide content extracted from the inoculated seedlings was 0.6% higher than that of the control. Similar growth promotion was observed with the transplants inoculated with strain ZJSH1. The mechanism of growth promotion was attributed to a combination of phytohorm

Regulated deficit irrigation was associated with altered stem hormones and carbon metabolism that improved yield and lodging-related traits in drip-irrigated spring wheat.

Water scarcity is becoming increasingly severe, while the demand for stable and high-yield wheat production continues to rise. Under these circumstances, achieving the dual objectives of water conservation and yield enhancement through precise water management represents a critical challenge for sustainable agriculture, particularly in arid oasis regions. In this study, we investigated the dynamics of endogenous hormones and carbon metabolism in the basal first and second internodes (I1 and I2) of wheat stems under drip irrigation conditions. Special attention was given to the roles of non-stru

[Level of cytokines, abscisic and salicylic acids in the leafs of Phlox under the effect of invasion by conidia of phytopathogens].

We studied the effects of the invasion of Phlox paniculata L. and Ph. setacea L. by causative agents of the phlox powdery mildew (compatible combination) and lupine powdery mildew (incompatible combination) on the level of endogenous cytokinins and abscisic and salicylic acids. In all experimental variants, the level of zeatin-riboside and abscisic and salicylic acids in the leaves of invaded plants increased within 48 h. The highest level of phytohormones and salicylic acid was recorded in the absolutely resistant species Ph. setacea.

Cadmium stress suppresses the tillering of perennial ryegrass and is associated with the transcriptional regulation of genes controlling axillary bud outgrowth.

Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), a grass species with superior tillering capacity, plays a potential role in the phytoremediation of cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soils. Tiller production is inhibited in response to serious Cd stress. However, the regulatory mechanism of Cd stress-induced inhibition of tiller development is not well documented. To address this issue, we investigated the phenotype, the expression levels of genes involved in axillary bud initiation and bud outgrowth, and endogenous hormone biosynthesis and signaling pathways in seedlings of perennial ryegrass under Cd stress.

The Spotted Lanternfly Contains High Concentrations of Plant Hormones in its Salivary Glands: Implications in Host Plant Interactions.

The spotted lanternfly (SLF), Lycorma delicatula is an invasive species in the United States that has emerged as a significant pest in vineyards. This polyphagous insect causes significant damage to grapevines and tree of heaven (TOH). SLF feeds voraciously on plant tissues using its piercing and sucking mouthparts through which it injects saliva and uptakes plant sap. Despite its impact, research on fundamental mechanisms mediating SLF interactions with their predominant hosts is limited. This study documents the morphology of salivary glands and quantifies plant hormones in salivary glands o

Agronomic, Hormonal, and Seed Quality Responses of Soybeans to Four Spray Treatment Regimes Under Irrigated Conditions in Xinjiang: A Three-Year Field Study.

Soybean production commonly faces challenges including severe pod abscission, incomplete seed filling, and uncoordinated source-sink relationships that limit yield potential. Plant growth regulator application may influence source-sink relationships and thereby affect soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) yield formation. This three-year field study (2023-2025) evaluated the effects of four spray programs on soybean yield, quality, total above-ground biomass partitioning, and endogenous hormone dynamics under Xinjiang's irrigated production conditions. The four treatments were an untreated control

Antioxidant enzyme activities and hormonal status in response to Cd stress in the wetland halophyte Kosteletzkya virginica under saline conditions.

Salt marshes constitute major sinks for heavy metal accumulation but the precise impact of salinity on heavy metal toxicity for halophyte plant species remains largely unknown. Young seedlings of Kosteletzkya virginica were exposed during 3 weeks in nutrient solution to Cd 5 µM in the presence or absence of 50 mM NaCl. Cadmium (Cd) reduced growth and shoot water content and had major detrimental effect on maximum quantum efficiency (F(v) /F(m) ), effective quantum yield of photosystem II (Y(II)) and electron transport rates (ETRs). Cd induced an oxidative stress in relation to an increase in O
