Using ICPC-2 Standard to Identify Thai Zingiberaceae of Pharmacological Interest.

The Economic Botany Data Collection Standard (EBDCS) is a widely used standard among ethnobotanists. However, this standard classifies ethnomedicinal uses into categories based on local peoples' perception. It is difficult to apply in pharmacological research. The International Classification of Primary Care (ICPC), now updated to ICPC-2, is more related to medical terms, but is rarely used among ethnobotanists. This study aims to apply the ICPC-2 to classify metadata of the ethnomedicinal uses of Zingiberaceae plants in Thailand, in order to identify important medicinal taxa for future resear

Reinstatement of Hellwigia Warb. (Zingiberaceae) and its molecular and morphological delimitation.

The currently polyphyletic genus Alpinia Roxb. (Zingiberaceae) has over 260 species widely spread through subtropical and tropical Asia and a complex taxonomic history. This study focuses on the "Carolinensis" clade of Alpinia hitherto suggested by molecular evidence. We expand on previous research through more comprehensive taxon sampling (about a fivefold increase) and morphological observation. We inferred maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian trees based on the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, using sequences available on GenBank along with 70 newly generated sequ

Antidiabetic and Anti-Inflammatory Potential of Zingiberaceae Plants in Dietary Supplement Interventions.

Plants from the Zingiberaceae family, particularly Zingiber officinale, Curcuma longa, and Alpinia galanga, are rich sources of bioactive compounds with documented antidiabetic and anti-inflammatory properties. This review summarizes current evidence on their phytochemical profiles and pathways relevant to metabolic regulation. Key compounds, including gingerols, shogaols, curcuminoids, and phenylpropanoids, support glucose homeostasis by enhancing insulin sensitivity, promoting Glucose Transporter Type 4 (GLUT4)-mediated glucose uptake, improving β-cell function, and modulating metabolic sign

TOXICITY OF ALPINIA GALANGA (ZINGIBERACEAE) RHIZOME EXTRACTS AGAINST SPODOPTERA LITURA (LEPIDOPTERA: NOCTUIDAE).

The objective of this study was to develop an alternative strategy for the control of Spodoptera litura larvae by using botanical insecticides. Rhizomes of Alpinia galanga were extracted with hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and methanol, respectively. Each crude extract was examined for toxicity against the second instars of S. litura according to a topical application method. The dichloromethane extract was found to show the highest toxicity of all the extracts, with LD50 = 3177 and 2099 ppm at 24 and 48 h post-treatment, respectively.

Curcuma deliniana, a Rare New Curcuma Species (Zingiberaceae) Previously Misidentified as C. wenyujin.

A new triploid Curcuma species from Guangxi in China, C. deliniana, is described and illustrated. It was previously misidentified as the valuable medicinal plant C. wenyujin but can be readily distinguished from the latter by its rarely branched rhizomes, slender shoots, narrow leaf blades, and small inflorescences. The species is used as a substitute or adulterant of another medicinal species, C. kwangsiensis, from which it differs in larger, nearly globose main rhizomes; green leaf blades that are glabrous adaxially and sparsely puberulent or glabrous abaxially; inflorescence with fewer, loo

Effect of aqueous extract of alligator pepper (Zingiberaceae aframomum melegueta) on gestational weight gain.

Increased gestational weight gain is associated with higher rates of complications of pregnancy and delivery. Gestational weight gain of 9-12 Kg has been associated with the best outcome for both mothers and infants. However, weight gain in most pregnant women is not within this range, perhaps due to the difficulty of calculating the exact quantity, timing and duration of dietary restriction in individual patients that would bring their weight gain within the normal range. There is therefore a need to develop a drug or food supplement that would reduce weight gain without causing adverse effec

Zingiberaceae-derived phytomolecules inhibit Japanese encephalitis virus RNA dependent RNA polymerase: a molecular dynamics study.

The Japanese encephalitis virus, (JEV), is a flavivirus mostly transmitted by Culex mosquitoes mostly present in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific region. Ardeid-wading birds are the natural reservoir of JEV; nonetheless, pigs are frequently a key amplifying host during epidemics in human populations. Although more domestic animals and wildlife are JEV hosts, it is unclear how these animals fit into the ecology and epidemiology of the virus. Even though there is no specific therapy, vaccines are available to prevent this infection. However, current vaccinations do not work against every c
