Preventing self-fertilization: Insights from Ziziphus species.

The fitness of self-progeny individuals is inferior to that of their outcrossed counterparts, resulting in a reduction in a plant population's ability to survive and reproduce. To prevent self-fertilization, angiosperms with hermaphrodite flowers may exploit a variety of mechanisms, including synchronous dichogamy and self-incompatibility. Synchronous dichogamy involves two flowering morphs, with strict within-morph synchronization, thereby preventing not only autogamy and geitonogamy but also intra-morph mating. Self-fertilization is also prevented by self-incompatibility, a genetic mechanism

Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology of Ziziphus jujuba Mills.

Ziziphus jujuba Mills, 'annab' in Iran, 'ber' in India or 'pomme sourette' in France, is a species whose fruit (known warmly as 'the fruits of life' in China) has been consumed for centuries for its nutritional value. The food industry used it as a food additive and flavoring. The dry seeds, the crude leaves and the stem bark are still used in ethnopharmacology to treat digestive disorders and gastric ulcers as antitussive, laxative and hypotensive drugs; even now, it is used in China to treat children who suffer from typhoid fever, furuncle and ecthyma. In Taiwan, the dry seeds for the variet

The role of 1-methylcyclopropene in sulfur accumulation and assimilation in Ziziphus jujuba Mill.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2), sulfites, and related sulfur derivatives are widely present in air, water, and food systems, where excessive exposure can lead to respiratory irritation, oxidative stress, hypersensitivity reactions, and micronutrient depletion, threatening human health and ecological safety. Nevertheless, unavoidable residues and sulfur assimilation in plants can cause phytotoxicity and leave harmful sulfur species in edible tissues. In this study, we explore the role of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) in regulating sulfur accumulation and assimilation, using Ziziphus jujuba Mill. as a mode

Carbohydrate dynamics and transcriptomic changes during floral development in heterodichogamous Ziziphus jujuba.

Flower opening is driven by petal cell elongation, a process that depends on water influx into cells and the maintenance of turgor pressure. Consequently, carbohydrate metabolism is fundamental to flower development, yet its role during floral development in heterodichogamous species remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated biomass accumulation across the unopened flower bud, male, and female floral phases in the Early and Late morphs of Ziziphus jujuba. We further characterized non-structural carbohydrate dynamics and transcriptomic changes in flowers and corresponding leaf t
