alpha-L-Fucosidase isoenzymes pattern in hairy cell leukaemia (HCL) is characterized by the disappearance of the more acidic form when compared to normal lymphocytes. Our data seem to indicate that this profile could not be related to the T or B phenotype because in normal lymphocytes (mainly T), MO cells possessing T markers, as well as lymphocytes from chronic lymphoid leukaemia (CLL) known to exhibit normal-like B phenotypes two alpha-L-fucosidase forms are identified and especially the more acidic one.

Bone marrow fibroblasts were cultured from two patients with fucosidosis type 2, six control subjects, and three patients with other lysosomal disorders. Optimal conditions for measuring alpha-L-fucosidase activity in lysates of these cells with the fluorogenic substrate 4-methylumbelliferyl-alpha-L-fucoside were established. The pH profile of normal bone marrow fibroblasts showed three peaks and a shoulder of enzymatic activity, with maximum activity at pH 4.75. In cells derived from fucosidosis patients two peaks of apparent alpha-L-fucosidase activity were obtained; the pH optimum was 4.5.

An alpha-L-fucosidase had been purified approximately 300-fold from the liver (hepatopancreas) of the marine mollusc Chamelea gallina L. (= Venus gallina L.). OBJECTIVES: To assess the value of serum alpha-L-fucosidase as a tumor marker in the diagnosis of ovarian and other female genital tract tumors.
METHODS: One-hundred fifty-one patients were studied; 101 had different genital tract tumors (malignant ovarian tumors (48), carcinoma of the cervix (13), endometrial carcinoma (6), carcinoma of the vulva (6) and benign tumors (28)). A control group of 50 healthy female patients was included. Serum alpha-L-fucosidase activity was determined in all patients and controls. Serum CA 125 level was also determined in patients with malignant ovarian tumors.

The profiles of semen sialic acid and the enzyme alpha-L-fucosidase were studied in rams undergoing chronic infection by Trypanosoma congolense.
