Аннотация
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The bark of Crateva religiosa has been traditionally used in Ayurveda for its anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, and antiproliferative properties, particularly in treating cysts and inflammation, making it a potential agent in managing Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).
AIM: The present study aims to evaluate the effects of hydroalcoholic C. religiosa bark extract (CRE) on letrozole-induced PCOS rats.
METHODS: PCOS was induced using letrozole in female Wistar rats for 21 days, then treated with hydroalcoholic C. religiosa bark extract (CRE) at doses of 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg. Estrous cycle regulation, Organ weight and histopathology (ovary and uterus), serum hormone levels (progesterone, testosterone and estrogen), oxidative stress markers (MDA, SOD and CAT), and lipid profiles were evaluated. Additionally, the expression of CYP19A1 (aromatase) and Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptor-γ (PPARγ) was measured.
RESULTS: The findings of our study showed a regulation in the estrous cycle, normalization of ovarian and uterine histoarchitecture, and reduced oxidative stress. It also mended the abnormal hormone and lipid profiles. Furthermore, the gene expressions of CYP19A1 and PPARγ have been upregulated in C. religiosa treated groups in a dose-dependent manner.
CONCLUSION: The therapeutic effect of C. religiosa bark extract helps to restore hormonal balance and promotes normal estrous cycles, in part by modulating the key genes such as CYP19A1 and PPARγ, highlighting its potential as a natural treatment for PCOS.
