STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The effects of acid exposure on interim crown materials have not been fully elucidated, and comparative data regarding different production methods are limited.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the effects of simulated gastric acid on the fracture load, surface roughness, and optical properties of one milled and three 3-dimensionally (3D) printed interim crown materials.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: One milled, Ceramill A-Temp (CAT), and three 3D printed, Primeprint Temp (PT), PowerResins C-Temp (PCT), and Alias Temp C&B (AT), materials were evaluated. For fracture load testing, crown specimens were manufactured to match the morphology of the maxillary first premolar tooth (n=30) and assigned to 2 groups: control and gastric acid exposure. Fracture load (N) was measured using a universal testing machine. For surface roughness and optical analyses, disk specimens (Ø10×2 mm, n=10) were manufactured and evaluated before and after gastric acid exposure. Surface roughness was measured using a contact profilometer, and Ra and Rz values were recorded. Color differences (ΔE00) were calculated using the CIEDE2000 formula, and relative translucency parameter (RTP00) values were determined. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk, Kruskal-Wallis, Wilcoxon, Dunn tests (α=.05).

RESULTS: Statistically significant differences in fracture load were observed among the groups (P=.001). Gastric acid exposure did not significantly affect fracture load in any group (P>.05), except for the CAT group, which demonstrated a significant reduction (P=.006). No statistically significant differences were found in ΔE00 values among the 3D printed materials (P>.05). RTP00 values differed significantly among the groups (P=.001). A statistically significant change in RTP00 before and after gastric acid exposure was detected only in the PCT group (P=.013). Surface roughness values differed significantly before and after gastric acid exposure (P=.001). Following gastric acid exposure, higher Ra values were observed in the PCT (P=.016) and AT (P=.005) groups, whereas a significant decrease in Rz was observed in the PT group (P=.033).

CONCLUSIONS: Gastric acid exposure did not affect the fracture load. The ΔE00 and ΔRTP00 values for each material remained below the clinically perceptible threshold after gastric acid exposure. The milled group exhibited the lowest surface roughness values both before and after gastric acid exposure.
