Psychosocial Impacts of Craniofacial Abnormalities on Pediatric Patients and Their Families: A Narrative Review.
Аннотация
INTRODUCTION
This narrative review aims to outline the psychosocial impacts of craniofacial abnormalities on affected children and their families and offer insight and tools for providers caring for this population.
METHOD: A literature review was conducted using peer-reviewed databases to identify pertinent psychosocial factors and summarize implications for practice.
RESULTS
Patients with craniofacial abnormalities and their families may experience stress, anxiety, isolation, and embarrassment related to their diagnosis. Assessment and intervention tools exist to assist providers with identifying a family's individual psychosocial needs and should be utilized longitudinally.
DISCUSSION: Providers play a significant first-line role in assessing the psychosocial needs of their patients with craniofacial abnormalities, and they should address these needs at each visit along with a multidisciplinary team. Meeting the family's psychosocial needs improves quality of life and promotes successful family dynamics.
