BACKGROUND: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a widespread global phenomenon. Though Palestinian boys in Israel face the highest risk of CSA compared to Palestinian girls and Jewish children, to date, no study has exclusively examined the CSA experiences of this group.

OBJECTIVE: This study explores the experiences of Palestinian boys in Israel who have undergone CSA, focusing on how their social and political context shapes their meaning-making process of CSA.

PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Twelve men who experienced CSA in childhood and were considered resilient enough to take part in the study were recruited.

METHODS: A qualitative approach, utilizing narrative interviews was employed to explore participants' meaning making of CSA as children. Data were analyzed using grounded theory methodology.

RESULTS: Participants described rigid gender socialization, emphasizing boys' expected ability to protect themselves from harm, and suppress emotional expression of distress. Families perceived both public and private spaces as safe for boys, thus rendering the occurrence of CSA as an inconceivable notion. This lack of awareness was especially salient within private settings, wherein parents frequently overlooked signs of abuse. Participants posited that the confluence of familial unawareness and the perceived minimal likelihood of punitive repercussions for perpetrators, increased boys' susceptibility to CSA. In the absence of family awareness or guidance, boys resorted to solitary coping mechanisms, often experiencing feelings of isolation and hopelessness. The majority obscured the abuse, thereby facilitating its perpetuation and exacerbating their psychological distress.

CONCLUSIONS: The CSA experienced by Palestinian boys within the Israeli context is exacerbated by societal denial, perpetuating silence surrounding the issue and consequently elevating boys' vulnerability. To effectively tackle this challenge, it is imperative to incorporate comprehensive sexual education within Arab educational institutions directed at both parents and male students, while simultaneously promoting the development of healthier and more adaptable masculine identities among boys.
