[Transport to Computerized Tomography in the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit Carries a One in Five Chance of Complications].
Аннотация
Background
The transfer of sedated and ventilated patients from neurosurgical intensive care units (NICU) for brain CT scans is a common procedure, but it carries a real risk of complications, especially among unstable patients.
Objective
To assess the rate of complications during the transfer of sedated and ventilated patients for brain CT scans, and to classify their severity and types.
Methods
A retrospective study including 422 sedated and ventilated patients transferred from the NICU at Rambam Health Care Campus between January 2019 and September 2022. Data were collected from computerized medical and nursing records, and complications were classified as major or minor based on clinical consequences and the need for further medical intervention.
Results
Complications were documented in 78 cases (18.5%), of which 14 were major (3.3%), including unplanned extubation, dislodgement or malfunction of central medical devices (such as brain drains and central lines), and patient falls. Minor complications (15.2%) mainly included dislodgement of peripheral devices and reopening of surgical wounds requiring re-suturing.
Conclusions
Intrahospital transfer of sedated and ventilated patients for brain CT scans in neurosurgical intensive care units carries a significant complication rate. Therefore, it is essential to carefully consider the clinical necessity of repeat scans, with preference given to close clinical assessment and physiological monitoring.
