Аннотация

BACKGROUND: Trachoma is a public health problem worldwide, particularly in Ethiopia, where it contributes to one half of the global burden. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the progress made toward attaining the TF elimination threshold in Ethiopia.

METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of survey and trachoma elimination monitoring data from 2003 to 2023. In this study, researchers considered implementation units (IUs) that conducted at least one trachoma impact survey and that had received at least one round of mass drug administration were included in the analysis.

RESULTS: In 2023, a total of 85 IUs reported a prevalence among children aged 1-9 years >30%, whereas 284 IUs fell within the 10-29.9% range. Following intervention efforts, 36.1% [95% CI: 32.9 to 39.4%] of the IUs achieved the WHO elimination threshold, defined as a TF prevalence <5% among children aged 1-9 years. In addition, the national mean TF prevalence decreased from 26.0% in 2014/2015 to 10.8% in 2023.

CONCLUSIONS: Ethiopia is unlikely to eliminate national trachoma as a public health problem by 2027. This finding underscores the urgent need for context specific interventions to tackle the challenges faced in persistent and recrudescent districts.
