ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Astragali Complanati Semen, a member of the Leguminosae family, is derived from the dry mature seeds of Astragalus complanatus R. Br. It exhibits a broad spectrum of pharmacological activities, including anti-fatigue, anti-cancer, regulation of bone metabolism, hepatoprotection, lipid-lowering, blood pressure-lowering, and protection of the urogenital system.
AIMS OF THE REVIEW: This review summarizes the integrated research progress on Astragali Complanati Semen in the fields of botany, traditional applications, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and quality control. Furthermore, it discusses the emerging challenges associated with current research and proposes potential future development directions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Information on Astragali Complanati Semen was compiled from diverse authoritative sources, including ancient books of traditional Chinese Medicine, academic theses (such as Ph.D. and M.Sc. dissertations), medicinal plant monographs, international pharmacopoeias, and electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, ACS Publications, ScienceDirect, J-STAGE, SpringerLink, Taylor & Francis, CNKI, and Google Scholar).
RESULTS: First, the traditional uses and plant origins of Astragali Complanati Semen are outlined. Secondly, approximately 40 compounds, including flavonoids, sesquiterpenes, triterpenes, polysaccharides, and other compounds, have been isolated and identified from it. Third, the pharmacological activities and mechanisms of crude extract of Astragali Complanati Semen and its main bioactive compounds are summarized. Moreover, the processing and quality control are introduced briefly.
CONCLUSIONS: Astragali Complanati Semen is a frequently used Chinese Materia Medica with pharmacological effects that mainly affect the urogenital system, cardiovascular systems, and nervous system. This synthesis of botany, traditional use, phytochemistry, and pharmacology not only reveals current scientific advancements but also identifies notable research gaps. Future investigations should prioritize elucidating the pharmacological mechanisms of monomeric compounds and polysaccharides. Concurrently, advancing pharmacokinetic studies and conducting systematic toxicological assessments will be critical to support the development of evidence-based health products.
