Аннотация

AIMS: This study explored how mothers of childhood cancer survivors (CCS) adapt to daily life following hospitalization, with emphasis on establishing a new sense of normal. It sought to provide insight into mothers' unique experiences and perceptions of post-treatment life. Specifically, it examined which resilience factors support psychosocial well-being and effective coping and which contribute to maladaptive functioning.

METHODS

Guided by a phenomenological and interpretive epistemological stance, this qualitative study entailed in-depth, semi-structured interviews with five Estonian mothers. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis (RTA).

RESULTS

A full return to pre-diagnosis life and mindset was not achieved, as the experience profoundly altered mothers' lives and priorities. Unmet socioeconomic needs and financial strain persisted after hospitalization, while concerns about the affordability and accessibility of psychosocial support emerged as significant barriers. Most participants experienced prolonged dysfunction due to a lack of key resilience factors, whereas supportive partnerships, the capacity to share emotions, humor, optimism, and strong social and healthcare systems were identified as central components of parental resilience.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings underscore the importance of early psychosocial support in preventing long-term adverse outcomes, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). Interventions should be tailored to the needs of CCS families and coordinated or provided by the state to ensure effective follow-up care.

IMPLICATIONS TO PRACTICE: Health and social care professionals should proactively assess families' psychosocial and economic needs from diagnosis through survivorship. Accessible, affordable, well-coordinated follow-up services are essential to strengthen family resilience and prevent long-term psychological distress.
