Аннотация

CONTEXT: Therapeutic meal (ThM), where caregivers and patients share a meal in a communal setting, represent an innovative practice in integrative oncology. While much has been published on the nutritional benefits of specific foods, little attention has been given to the shared act of eating together as a therapeutic intervention. This study examines the ThM's benefits, risks, and therapeutic potential within an integrative care day hospital.

METHODS: A qualitative interpretative phenomenological analysis was conducted on cancer patient experiences at an integrative care day hospital. Data were collected through spontaneous comments and responses to structured questions about the ThM's atmosphere and perceived impact. Data saturation was achieved with 20 patient interviews.

RESULTS: Patients highlighted the ThM as a unique moment of conviviality and connection, frequently using terms such as "pleasant," "nice," and "kindness," reflecting positive perceptions. The shared meal fostered a sense of normalcy, autonomy, and community, offering a reprieve from the challenges of illness. It was described as a time of laughter and shared humanity, with caregivers facilitating discussions and creating a welcoming atmosphere. Caregivers played a pivotal role as facilitators, ensuring an inclusive atmosphere and guiding conversation. Challenges included accommodating dietary preferences and maintaining professional boundaries. The ThM enhanced patients' self-esteem and strengthened patient-caregiver relationships while reinforcing a holistic approach to care. The ThM proved to be a moment of shared presence and emotional connection.

CONCLUSION: ThM provides a powerful opportunity to enhance the psychosocial and emotional well-being of oncology patients. Though not explicitly perceived as care, they foster relaxation, community, and meaningful interactions. Caregivers require specific preparation to maintain a therapeutic context and balance professional boundaries. This innovative practice offers a valuable addition to integrative oncology and underscores the importance of shared humanity in supportive care. ThM warranting further exploration and implementation.
