Chemical analysis and biological activity of crude extracts obtained from leaves of Passiflora foetida (Subg. Passiflora) and Passiflora morifolia (Subg. Decaloba).

The state of Bahia is an important producer of passion fruit, as well as emerging on the Brazilian national scene as a centre of origin and diversity of passionflowers. We aimed to identify bioactive compounds from Passiflora morifolia and Passiflora foetida. It was possible to identify three flavonoids in P. foetida and 8 molecules in P. morifolia using the HPLC-MS/MS technique. In total, 2 (two) compounds were detected, but it was not possible to identify them in the crude extract of P. foetida leaves. In P. morifolia, 1 (one) of the compounds was not identified, only detected. Regarding antiparasitic activity P. morifolia extract exhibits better activity against Trypanosoma cruzi, with inhibition of 50% of viable cells at a concentration of 125 µg.mL-1, while P. foetida performs better against cell growth of Leishmania amazonensis at a concentration of 500 µg.mL-1. These results highlight an interesting future path for these extracts in relation to their biological activity we can base proposals for bioproducts.
