Аннотация

This article develops a theoretical and exploratory account of musical episodic modulation of human functioning, with special attention to emotional recall. It responds to a recurrent limitation in the psychology of music: although music's effects on attention, emotion, memory, motivation, and performance have been widely documented, these domains are often examined separately rather than as mutually organized dimensions of lived episodes. The article proposes that music may function as a modulating agent of human functioning when its temporal, affective, and semantically open structure becomes coupled with ongoing activity through anticipation mechanisms. Drawing on activity theory, phenomenology of temporal consciousness, floating intentionality, entrainment, and appraisal theory, the paper conceptualizes anticipation mechanisms as the dynamic relations among anticipators, the anticipated, and horizonality. These mechanisms explain how musical signals may organize salience, attention, affect, readiness, and possible next actions over time. The argument is illustrated through a phenomenologically oriented self-study in which the same song contributed to opposed emotional episodes during two recall activities: hopelessness, yearning, and sadness in relation to the memory of a deceased father, and excitement, hope, and joy in relation to an anticipated romantic encounter. The contrast suggests that musical valence does not determine emotional outcome by itself. Rather, emotions emerge through projection-appraisal loops involving objects of thought, personal sense, belief systems, previous experience, and the unfolding music. The article concludes by outlining limitations, future research directions, and distinguishing the more specific phenomenon analyzed from the broader account of musical modulation of human functioning.
