Аннотация
Pneumococci are the most common bacterial cause of childhood pneumonia, especially in children aged younger than 5 years. In adults, pneumococci account for 10% to 30% of adult community-acquired pneumonia. The conjugate pneumococcal vaccines have been shown to have a remarkable effect, reducing the incidence of all types of pneumococcal diseases. Overtime the vaccines have been updated to include protection against more serotypes. Schedules for administration have also changed based on age and pre-existing conditions. Development and implementation of pneumococcal vaccines and racial disparities are discussed.
