OBJECTIVE: The mechanism of light damage causing pterygium was investigated from the point of view of lipid peroxidation.
METHODS: 22 patients with pterygium underwent excision of pterygium and a little superior bulbar conjunctiva was excised as normal control. The lipid peroxidation reaction of both pathologic and normal samples was analyzed by measuring the concentration of malondialdehyde.
RESULT: The concentration of malondialdehyde in the pathologic samples was much higher than that in the normal samples (P < 0.01).
CONCLUSION: Light Induced peroxidation reaction is closely related to the pterygium formation.
