Malondialdehyde-acetaldehyde adducts and anti-malondialdehyde-acetaldehyde antibodies in rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Malondialdehyde-acetaldehyde (MAA) adducts are a product of oxidative stress associated with tolerance loss in several disease states. This study was undertaken to investigate the presence of MAA adducts and circulating anti-MAA antibodies in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: Synovial tissue from patients with RA and patients with osteoarthritis (OA) were examined for the presence of MAA-modified and citrullinated proteins. Anti-MAA antibody isotypes were measured in RA patients (n = 1,720) and healthy controls (n = 80) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Antigen-

Addition of olivetol to crackers decreases malondialdehyde content and produces malondialdehyde-olivetol adducts.

This study was undertaken to investigate the malondialdehyde-trapping ability by m-diphenols and the consequent decrease of malondialdehyde in foods. Olivetol was added to crackers, which were prepared with wheat flour and either oxidized or fresh sunflower, linseed, and camelina oils. When crackers were prepared with oxidized oils, olivetol-containing crackers contained less malondialdehyde (∼30%) than control crackers. This decrease of malondialdehyde content was parallel to the formation of malondialdehyde-olivetol adducts (250-1300 ng/g). When fresh oils were employed, storage produced mor

Malondialdehyde trapping by food phenolics.

The reactions between malondialdehyde and 2,5-dimethylresorcinol, orcinol, olivetol, and alkylresocinols were studied in an attempt to investigate both if this lipid oxidation product is trapped by phenolics analogously to other reactive carbonyls and to elucidate the chemical structures of the produced adducts. After being formed, malondialdehyde is both partially fractionated to acetaldehyde and oligomerized into dimers and trimers. All these compounds react with phenolics producing three main kinds of derivatives: 5(or 7)-alkyl-7(or 5)-hydroxy-4-methyl-4H-chromene-3-carbaldehydes, 7-alkyl-9

[Malondialdehyde formation by platelets of hemophiliacs].

The platelets of haemophilic patients produce after stimulation with thrombin (5 NIH-units) a significantly reduced amount of malondialdehyde in comparison to the platelets of healthy children of the same age. There is a positive correlation between the platelet count in citrated whole blood and malondialdehyde production in the group of healthy children, however the same correlation is negative in adults and strongly negative in haemophiliacs. Because of the 24 hour-intervals between the last substitution and investigation in the majority of haemophilic patients, the reduced MDA-production of

Malondialdehyde contents in infant milk formulas.

Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in infant milk formulas have been monitored by using an aqueous acid extraction method combined with the thiobarbituric acid method (TBA-test). Vegetable oils, with a remarkable content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are used to enrich the infant milk formulas. As PUFA are more susceptible to autoxidation, it becomes of great interest to have information about the safety and preservation of these products. We monitored MDA content in twenty of the most popular infant milk formulas and in some commercial cow milk samples and compared the obtained data. Levels

Malondialdehyde as a Prognostic Factor in Alcoholic Hepatitis.

AIMS: Alcoholic hepatitis is a severe complication of alcoholism, associated with high short-term mortality. Although pathogenesis remains obscure, it is generally accepted that lipopolysaccharide-induced cytokine secretion with further generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) play outstanding roles. Prognosis is uncertain, and the usually employed prognostic scores do not include variables related to ROS generation. Therefore, this study was performed to assess short-term prognostic value of cytokines, nutritional status, different scores [Maddrey, model for end-stage liver disease (MELD),

Malondialdehyde levels in patients with duodenal ulcer.

Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a stable product of lipid peroxidation of membrane lipids. In view of its role in membrane lipid damage in various inflammatory disorders, MDA levels were estimated in 83 duodenal ulcer patients and 48 controls. MDA levels were found to be significantly higher in duodenal ulcer patients as compared to controls (mean +/- SD 280.2 +/- 109.0 versus 216.5 +/- 81.4 nm/dL, p < 0.001). These increased levels of MDA may represent either the result of peroxidative damage in the disease process or a pathogenetic factor enhancing the risk for duodenal ulcer.

Alkylresorcinols trap malondialdehyde in whole grain crackers.

To study the alkylresorcinols ability to trap lipid oxidation products in foods, crackers were prepared with either whole grain rye, wheat, spelt, or oat flour, and either sunflower or linseed oil, and were stored for up to 36 days at room temperature. During storage, polyunsaturated fatty acyl chains degraded, malondialdehyde was produced, and alkylresorcinol content decreased. At the end of the storage, alkylresorcinol content in crackers was reduced by 61-78 % and a part of disappeared alkyresorcinols (3-8 %) appeared as malondialdehyde/alkylresorcinol adducts. Formed adducts were unambiguo

Malondialdehyde Epitopes as Targets of Immunity and the Implications for Atherosclerosis.

Accumulating evidence suggests that oxidation-specific epitopes (OSEs) constitute a novel class of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) generated during high oxidative stress but also in the physiological process of apoptosis. To deal with the potentially harmful consequences of such epitopes, the immune system has developed several mechanisms to protect from OSEs and to orchestrate their clearance, including IgM natural antibodies and both cellular- and membrane-bound receptors. Here, we focus on malondialdehyde (MDA) epitopes as prominent examples of OSEs that trigger both innate and

Erythrocyte malondialdehyde and glutathione levels in vitiligo patients.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is an acquired and progressive hypomelanotic disease that manifests as circumscribed depigmented patches on the skin. Although the precise mechanism remains to be elucidated, an imbalance of the oxidant/antioxidant system has been proposed as an important etiologic mechanism. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the oxidant/antioxidant status of vitiligo patients at the erythrocyte level. METHODS: Fifty-three vitiligo patients and 65 phototype-, age-, and sex-matched healthy controls were included in this study. Blood samples were collected from all sub

Nitrite/nitrate and malondialdehyde levels in nasal polyp.

The aim of this study was to examine the pathophysiological role of NO (nitric oxide) and MDA (malondialdehyde) in tissue in patients with nasal polyposis. We measured nitrite/nitrate (Nitrite/Nitrate; NO2-/NO3-) and MDA in tissue and plasma of NP patients (n=20) and controls (n=20). MDA level expressed as the concentration of substances reacting to thiobarbituric acid and production of NO (concentration of nitrite/nitrate in plasma) by the Griess reaction were determined. The level of NO2- and NO3- in tissue are higher than that of the normal tissue (p<0.05). The level of MDA in tissue are hi

Preventing in vitro lipoperoxidation in the malondialdehyde-thiobarbituric assay.

The malondialdehyde-thiobarbituric acid assay is widely used to study lipid peroxidation. Among the various methods used to perform the assay, the most widely accepted is the quantification of malondialdehyde using the thiobarbituric acid reaction, followed by reversed-phase chromatography. However, unacceptable results may be obtained as malondialdehyde can be produced in vitro. To study the conditions that inhibit in vitro lipid peroxidation, malondialdehyde levels were measured in cultured cells using different concentrations of butylated hydroxytoluene, EDTA or a combination of both. Butyl

Decrease of serum malondialdehyde in patients treated with chlorpromazine.

Malondialdehyde determination in serum from schizophrenic patients before and after treatment with chlorpromazine showed that, after treatment, patients had significantly lower values than before. The antioxidant properties of chlorpromazine can be related to its effect on the level of serum lipid peroxides and possibly to its neuroleptic action.

Ultrasensitive detection of malondialdehyde with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a biomarker of lipid peroxidation that has been widely associated with food rancidity as well as many human diseases. Most current MDA detection methods involve MDA reaction with thiobarbituric acid (TBA), followed by UV-visible and/or fluorescence detection of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-separated TBA-MDA. Herein, we report the first proof-of-concept study of surface-enhanced Raman detection of a TBA-MDA adduct using silver nanoparticles as the SERS substrate and the 632.8 nm HeNe laser as a Raman excitation source. Current SERS detection limit of TB

Urinary malondialdehyde levels in newborns following delivery room resuscitation.

BACKGROUND: Delivery room resuscitation (DRR) is a common emergency in newborns, particularly in resource-poor settings where intrapartum monitoring is not readily available. It may give rise to oxidative stress in neonates due to reoxygenation and reperfusion of previously hypoxic and ischemic tissues. Urinary malondialdehyde (MDA), being non-invasive, may serve as a marker of oxidative stress in these infants. OBJECTIVE: We assessed oxidative stress in term newborns requiring DRR by measuring MDA levels in urine and serum samples collected at 12-24 h of age. METHODS: The study population c

Malondialdehyde level and adenosine deaminase activity in nasal polyps.

OBJECTIVE: Although there are many reports on adenosine deaminase (ADA) activities in different tissues, no information is available about the enzyme activity in nasal mucosa and polyp tissues. Whereas ADA is related to the production of free radicals by neutrophils, malondialdehyde (MDA) is an indicator of lipid peroxidation that is a general mechanism of tissue damage by free radicals. This study is aimed at determining and comparing the ADA activity and MDA level in nasal polyps and normal mucosa. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Twenty-three patients with nasal polyps and a control group consist
