Аннотация

BACKGROUND: Pediatric inguinal herniotomy remains one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in children. Two historical techniques-those of William Mitchell-Banks and Alexander Hugh Ferguson-laid the foundation for age-adapted surgical strategies in hernia repair.

AIM: To examine the historical, anatomical, and surgical foundations of the Mitchell-Banks and Ferguson techniques in pediatric inguinal herniotomy, to distinguish their technical differences, and to advocate for the pedagogical recovery of their eponyms in contemporary surgical training.

METHODS: This historical review synthesizes primary surgical texts, anatomical literature, and contemporary pediatric surgery references. It includes a technical comparison of both approaches, their anatomical rationale based on patient age, and analysis of their legacy in Latin American and North American practice.

MAIN FINDINGS: Mitchell-Banks' technique involves high ligation of the hernia sac without opening the inguinal canal, suitable for infants with a short, straight canal. Ferguson's method incorporates canal exposure and reinforcement, applicable to older children with more mature anatomy. While both techniques are still in use, their eponymous origins have faded in modern literature and training.

CONCLUSION: Reintegrating the historical names and rationale of the Mitchell-Banks and Ferguson techniques into surgical education may help preserve their legacy, foster anatomybased decision-making, and honor the pioneers who shaped pediatric hernia repair.
