OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the development and application of a novel F-ACP@CMC/LYZ gel for the remineralization of demineralized cementum, addressing the challenges of root caries treatment in aging populations.
METHODS: The F-ACP@CMC/LYZ gel was formulated by incorporating amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) into a carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) and lysozyme (LYZ) matrix, fortified with sodium fluoride (NaF). The gel's physicochemical properties were characterized using TEM, SEM, EDS, and zeta potential analysis. Remineralization efficacy was evaluated on demineralized cementum samples through SEM, XRD, and nanoindentation. Microleakage was assessed in resin-filled root cavities, and biocompatibility was tested using MC3T3-E1 cells.
RESULTS: The F-ACP@CMC/LYZ gel exhibited uniform spherical structures with increased particle size and zeta potential, indicating enhanced stability. EDS mapping confirmed the homogeneous distribution of key elements. The treated cementum samples developed a dense remineralized layer with mechanical properties comparable to natural cementum, outperforming traditional NaF treatment. The gel significantly reduced microleakage and demonstrated good biocompatibility.
CONCLUSIONS: The F-ACP@CMC/LYZ gel is a promising material for cementum remineralization, offering effective remineralization, improved mechanical properties, reduced microleakage, and good biocompatibility.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This study provides a novel biomimetic approach for treating root caries, which could significantly improve clinical outcomes by promoting cementum remineralization and reducing the risk of secondary caries.
