Аннотация

AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the problems experienced by nurses during intravenous intervention in children.

DESIGN

A descriptive, cross-sectional study.

METHODS

This study was conducted with nurses employed in primary and secondary healthcare institutions in a provincial centre situated in eastern Turkey. Data were gathered between March 2024 and April 2024, utilising socio-demographic characteristic forms and intravenous intervention application forms developed by the researchers.

RESULTS

The study comprised 402 nurses. The predominant challenge noted during intravenous interventions was children exhibiting distress, manifesting as yelling or crying before/during the procedure. Furthermore, 74.3% of the nurses reported encountering family reactions when facing intravenous access challenges, 71.4% attributed intravenous access problems to professional experience, 58.4% associated these issues with the clinic/unit of employment and 52.3% linked them to educational factors.

PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: The high rate of unsuccessful interventions, within the initial hours of a shift, suggests a need for attention to this issue. Factors such as the child's restlessness before or during the procedure, as well as lack of cooperation, were found to negatively impact the success of intravenous interventions. It is suggested that providing support and fostering cooperation from both the child and parents may enhance the success of such interventions.
