BACKGROUND: Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL) consists of heterogeneous group of malignant lymphoid neoplasms that are closely related, but present a gamut of morphological, genetic and clinical features. In India, age adjusted incidence rate for NHL was found out to be 2.9/100000 in men and 1.5/100000 in women.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinicopathological profile of patients diagnosed with NHL.
METHODS: This was a retrospective observational study. The study was carried out among NHL patients admitted in the tertiary care hospitals of a medical college in South India for a period of seven years. The data pertaining to sociodemographic details, clinical features, investigations and histopathological characteristics was collected and analysed using SPSS Version 25.
RESULTS: Data obtained from 425 NHL patients shows that majority of the cases were belonging to the age group of 41-60 years (42.4%), with a higher proportion among men (65.2%). More than two third of the patients presented with swelling (66.2%). Nodal NHL was more common (57.4%). The most common extranodal site of involvement was the gastrointestinal tract (29.5%), followed by bone marrow and central nervous system. B-cell type was commoner (91.3%). Around two third of the patients had high grade NHL.
CONCLUSION: NHL is more commonly observed in men and elderly, with lymph nodes being the major site and B-cell type being commoner over T-cell type and majority were from high grade. The most common symptom experienced by NHL Patients was observed to be the presence of swelling at the time of admission.
