BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGIDs) are classified into eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and non-EoE EGIDs, with the latter being more common in Japan. Although recent studies have suggested an association between EGIDs and neurodevelopmental disorders (ND), domestic data remain limited. This study examined the relationship between ND and non-EoE EGIDs.
METHODS: We evaluated 33 children diagnosed with non-EoE EGIDs and determined the prevalence of comorbid ND. Clinical characteristics-including sex, age at onset, treatment patterns, and relapse-were examined according to the presence or absence of ND, and the reasons for relapse were also reviewed.
RESULTS: ND was identified in 7 patients (21.2%). The ND group included 6 boys and 1 girl, with onset ages of 7‒14 years (median 11). The non-ND group (n=26) included 15 boys and 11 girls, with onset ages of 3‒15 years (median 11.5). No significant differences were observed in sex distribution or age of onset. No ND patients achieved remission with leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) monotherapy, whereas 6 of 26 non-ND patients (23%) responded to LTRA alone. Relapse rates were similar between groups; however, relapse was more often attributed to patient-related causes in the ND group and disease-related causes in the non-ND group.
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of ND may be high in children with non-EoE EGIDs. ND comorbidity may be associated with differences in treatment responsiveness and the underlying causes of relapse.
