Аннотация

BACKGROUND: LGBTQ+ older adults experience compounded vulnerabilities later in life, but most knowledge production about LGBTQ+ older adult experiences have occurred in coastal urban communities. This mixed-method community-engaged study aimed to (1) describe the occurrence and forms of material precarity among a sample of older LGBTQ+ adults in South Texas, (2) examine interactions between material precarity, health and social experiences; and (3) develop a cursory understanding of a community-driven LGBTQ+ aging agenda in the South Texas region.

METHODS: The research team deployed descriptive statistics, chi-square and Fisher's exact testing using community survey data (n = 93), as well as a thematic analysis of interviews (n = 13) and town halls (n = 2) guided by interpretive description.

RESULTS: The survey indicated high rates of material precarity across four domains: housing, food, utilities, and prescription coverage. Material precarity in the survey sample was not significantly linked to sexual orientation, gender identity, or combined SOGI identity. Precarity was socially patterned, with household size, loneliness, social support, and chronic disease burden emerging as statistically significant correlations with various domains, respectively. Qualitative findings added depth to survey findings and identified three needs: (1) LGBTQ+ affirming affordable senior housing; (2) health justice efforts for LGBTQ+ older adults; and (3) social programming to address loneliness, age segregation, and loss of role in community. Findings highlight distinct vulnerabilities faced by LGBTQ+ older adults across the South Texas region.
